This well-written and informative book has become the standard on the uses and laws regarding therapy and service dogs. With the expansion of new service dog types, a greater complexity with regard to service animal laws and regulations and the interpretation of these by the courts has developed. This book carefully examines these complexities at both the state and federal levels. In addition, the expanded use of therapy dogs in facilities and institutions has brought with it a paradigm shift in society's acceptance and acknowledgment of the canine capacity to contribute in meaningful ways to the lives of ill and institutionalized persons. This resource discusses the benefits of dogs as a therapeutic modality that reflects the importance of enrichment and healing to seizure patients, autistic children, and others with disabilities, including mental illness. Part I covers canines and canine caregiving, physical disabilities, mental disabilities, cancer sniffers, and the therapy dog movement. Part II explores traveling and living with canine caregivers, taking service and support dogs to schools, workplace scenarios, access rights of trainers and handlers, and proving service animal status and false assertions of such status. Part III discusses registration, licensing, tags, special gear for skilled dogs, traffic precautions, including cruelty and criminal interference laws protecting service animals. Part IV researches canine caregivers and social benefits, keeping animals with handlers in emergencies and disasters, tax benefits, and social service reimbursement for service animals. The author has provided a list of legal sources and service and therapy dog organizations by state. The information contained in this book is well-researched, factual, and appropriately cited. By reading this book, readers will acquire a clearer understanding of the many federal and state laws that apply to service and therapy dogs.

Review
This book is not only fascinating, provocative and comprehensive, but it offers the reader an entirely new and welcome perspective on the roles that dogs can play in the lives of persons with disabilities and on the laws that govern those relationships. It is masterful. --Professor Michael L. Perlin - Director, Online Mental Disability Law Program, New York Law School
Bound to become the standard on the uses and laws of therapy and service dogs, the discussion of the benefits of dogs as a therapeutic modality in this book is especially interesting and shows how dogs bring healing in ways no other modality can to seizure patients, autistic individuals, and others with disabilities. --J. Lawrence Thomas, Ph.D. - Faculty, NYU Medical Center, and Director of The Brain Clinic, New York City.
The analysis provided by John Ensminger s book will be especially useful to the disabled public, government agencies, private businesses, educational institutions, hospitals, health care providers, housing developments, airlines and public transportation providers, among others. --Joan Esnayra, Ph.D. - President, Psychiatric Service Dog Society (from the Foreword)

What dogs do for us
By Berny Olten
If you're looking for a fuzzy book of fuzzy stories this isn't it. Ensminger starts with the history, goes on to the science and ends with the law. His story is about how the more things dogs do for us, and the more the science proves that they are actually doing lots of things for us, the more the law is changing. So if you want pictures of a therapy dog licking your grandmother's face and making her smile despite the Alzheimer's, read something else. But if you want to know why hospitals and special schools and nursing homes let therapy dogs in (Centers for Disease Control reports, etc.), and what physiological and psychological effects the dog is having on your grandmother, Ensminger will tell you. If you want to know why there's a dog in front of the passenger next to you in coach that is way bigger than your dog which you were told had to fly with your luggage, Ensminger will tell you. Ensminger's story is about how irrational fears kept our best friend from us over most of the last 100 years (think Lucy, "Dog Germs!"), but now the pendulum is swinging the other way because the law is saying that dogs get to stay with us and help us and we're healthier for it. I for one am thankful things are changing, and glad that someone has turned the story into a good read.Service and Therapy Dogs in American Society: Science, Law and the Evolution of Canine Caregivers

FANTASTIC
By Christine C.
I am currently writing a legal academic paper on service animals and this book is the bible. I could not have found a better book. It is not filled with legal jargon and it is in an easy to read format. I never found it to be dull and the citations are incredibly helpful. I could not speak any more highly of this book.

Ensminger offers expert advice, opinion, and information concerning ...
By Dr. Pen
Ensminger offers expert advice, opinion, and information concerning all things related to public access for service and therapy dogs. The book presents an orderly, well organized discussion about the critical issues affecting service dogs and how they are treated in our country. Beginning with a strong discussion on the domestication of the dog and its divergence from the wolf, he works logically into the behavior and utility of the dog to assist humans. Ensminger provides an extraordinary bibliography of resources to assist the reader in exploring topics in greater detail. He hits all of the relevant topics a reader might want to know concerning service and therapy dogs, leaving a trail of challenges for the reader to pursue in their use of service dogs.
