Oblivion is a colorful tale with several interwoven subplots: meddling in-laws, extramarital advances and homosexual fantasies are just a few. Through it all, the reader remains on the edge of her seat, torn between wanting Aida to feel personally fulfilled and fearing that her secret may be revealed and her marriage put in danger. The twists and turns of the story keep the reader engaged. The sprinkles of African traditions and tastes make us thirst for more of that culture. She is getting better at hiding it but she knows sooner or later he will find out, and maybe they would be the doom's day of her marriage. Bad, bad girl LOL

Wow! Aida had my heart racing all throughout the story. Bad, bad girl LOL. The story is captivating, unpredictable just like I like it, and very well written. It shows how complex marriage is, and how easily we can take a spouse's behavior as meaning something completely opposite to what their true motivation is. Communication, understanding are key to a successful marriage. Oblivion has me once more loving Papatia Feauxzar's great writing skills!

An informative book; but take the authors' opinions with a grain of salt

This book describes the sequence of events by means of which the European Union (EU) was contrived from the time of its inception immediately following World War II up to the time of the book's publication in 2007. The word "contrived" is used here because it best describes the manner in which the Union of 2007, as portrayed in this book, was cobbled together. Its use is not intended to disparage either the political elitists who created the Union or this book's authors. For in reading about the process one can only marvel at the fact that the European elitists were able to create, compromise, adapt, jury-rig, and keep the Union together at all, let alone expand it; and equally impressive is the fact that this book's authors were able to outline that arduous process as well as they did in such a small book as this. For the most part, I found the book to be both interesting and informative; and it gave me a much greater appreciation for the difficulties involved in the EU's creation and maintenance, a few of which surprised me.

To illustrate: I didn't know that the Union owes its beginning, at least in part, to fear on the part of France that Germany might one day regain its pre-WWII strength and once again dominate France and Europe; leading to this attempt to constrain Germany and tie it as closely as possible to the rest of Europe. I did know, however, that the EU was created solely by "treaty," i.e. without popular vote, but I was surprised that these authors seemed to downplay that fact although it was apparent throughout the book. And, although it was mentioned in passing that the EU's Constitution was put up for a popular vote only twice --- once in France and once in the Netherlands --- failing both times; I was surprised that this fact was glossed over so quickly. Somehow that didn't seem appropriate since the authors noted that the political elitists who were devising and governing the Union were concerned that they somehow had to convince the people of the separate once-Sovereign States that they were being represented by the Union and owed their allegiance to it much as they owed their allegiance to their native lands. Finally, I was surprised a bit by the hypocrisy of the EU's political leadership which, according to these authors, intended for the Union be the equal of the United States but decided that Europe should remain under the protection of the United States because it would be too expensive for the EU to defend itself. Apparently, all Unions are equal, but some are more equal than others.

What did I like least about the book? Two things: First, much has changed since 2007 regarding the EU and much of what I was reading seemed outdated. I would like to have been reading a more current evaluation of the Union, perhaps as of 2011-12. (The book could certainly use another revision.) Secondly, it was clear to me in reading the book that radical environmentalists had infiltrated the European Union's institutions and that the authors of this book clearly believed in man-made "global warming" as it was being pushed by Britain's now-discredited Climate Research Unit (CRU) and by the equally-discredited United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). That would have been acceptable if the authors had merely expressed that as their personal opinions. But they consistently expressed it as fact and as a desperate problem which if ignored would have a devastating impact on the entire world and, in doing so, they took great satisfaction in the fact that the EU was a major player if not leading the charge.

That said: This is still an interesting book which should be of interest to anyone seeking to better understand the European Union and the foundation upon which it was built. In reading it, however, it would be well to take the authors' personal opinions with a grain of salt. I would also suggest that, as a primer, one might consider reading "The New Road to Serfdom" by Daniel Hannan before taking on this more challenging read.

Strong for its size

This book is very short and very small, but the authors make up for its size with an easily readable and understandable primer on the European Union. This is an excellent companion for any student interested in learning the basics of the European Union. It was required as part of a course on West-European Politics. The authors break the book up into a number of sections, each describing different aspects of the institution.

They aren't lying when they call it A Very Short Introduction. It is. That is great for me, as someone who is interested in understanding current situations without really being a huge history buff - or wanting to be, for that matter. This was concise and easy to follow and understand.

Awesome read!

This is the second book in the series and book one has to be read first!

Lance and Leila have just gotten married after the birth of their son Jase but soon they discover that trouble has followed them on their holidays. There is a group of Vampires called The Outsiders and they believe that Lance and Leila have the means of becoming human again.

As Lance forms an alliance with Xander Reed and the werewolves it is clear that they all must work together to face this new enemy and discover who is at the bottom of it.

Lance believes that to protect his family best he must become a human and Leila believes that she must become a vampire to protect her family. Will the two be able to come to an agreement before it is too late for both of them?

This book has romance, mystery and lots of para-normal! I think it's funny how Leila gets so wrapped up in sex while she is pregnant and is almost insatiable! Luckily she has a husband who is very eager to make her happy. I really enjoyed how the two both had opposite views on how they would stay safe and to be honest I couldn't see how Lance would be able to protect his family when he was a human when I saw what they were up against.

I really enjoyed all of the para-normal groups working together to protect Lance, Leila and Jase for the greater good! I can't wait to see what happens in the next book as Lance's history comes back to haunt his future!

Second in the 'Eternally Yours' book series, CROSSROADS is a brilliantly clever paranormal tale that takes a look at reversing vampirism.

Leila, a human doctor wife in love with her vampire husband Lance—who wants to be human again, does all she can to make his wish come true. She formulates a sunlight serum and with the help of friends embarks on finding a cure for vampirism. But as they draw near to a true remedy, Lance has second thoughts. Does he really want to give up eternal life for love and family?

This is a steamy-adult erotic tale that holds nothing back. The writing is superb. Vivid characters and a twisting story plot drive this colorful cast forward to an ending that immensely satisfies but leaves you wanting more. As far the vampire romance genre, this is one of the most entertaining books I’ve read in years.

I had the honour of reading this as a beta read, before anyone else had seen it and LOVED IT! It's just as good as book one, with Lance getting to tell his story, this time around.

I LOVE Lance!! He's so suave and sexy and he can say more with one look or a few words than other guys need pages to say. It doesn't hurt that Sophie's dream casting places Liam Hemsworth as Lance. I mean...swoon!

And, yes! I totally spent the entire book thinking about Liam Hemsworth as Lance. The fit is perfect. Especially in the hot, steamy scenes with Leila. I thought, with them married and baby Jace to take care of, that the heat might die down and the sex would take a back-seat to being parents and married life, but was I wrong or was I wrong? Holy Hotness!
I mean, Sophie's not afraid to pull a rabbit out the hat, when you least expect it. I thought the alley and elevator scenes in book one were hot, but the car scene and the chaise 'quickie' were HAWT!

I'm in love with the new characters, too. Adeline is interesting and I'm really curious as to how she's going to affect the story. I also heard a rumour that the Werewolf Alpha Xander will be getting his own book series. I can only say Hallelujah! I am so intrigued by his character and by the weird but interesting chemistry between him and the “should-be” Alpha Elias and their human girl Kalyssa. They could be something interesting.

But, my heart still belongs to Lance, even if it does drift, occasionally to Kellen, who is still amazing and hot, especially in his new suits. I'd love to see him get more of a story and a HEA of his own, but I don't see it being with Crissy. It just doesn't fit, for me, so I'm interested to see how his story will turn out, in the long term.

I also love how the plot picks up straight from the end of book one. There's no pretense of everything being hunky dory. We're straight in, at the wedding, and then we get a little hotness before the action starts. Of which there is plenty.

You'll also get great, kick-ass action. Intense, quick and fiery, but perfectly fitted into the plot and the characters. The action fits in with where they are, what they're doing and keeps the spice alive, in their marriage. It causes fights, arguments and resentment, guilt and all the emotions of any other character. But with these guys, it's suped up to a supernatural level.

The other amazing addition is Jace, himself. Now, as a baby, at the start of the book, he shouldn't be a big character, but he is. He's a dhampir, so his growth rate is ridiculously quick and he's talking before the end of the book. This not only makes sense, for the world Sophie has built, but it makes things interesting. Jace becomes this handful of a toddler and does all the unexpected things that kids do. He grows, learns and he's very much showing off his vampire tendencies in this story. I love that!

The really interesting thing that caught me completely by surprise, was the venture into Lance's past, with flashbacks. I loved seeing how he became a vampire, but also how it still affects him. I spent most of the book thinking that Selestra – a character from the flashback - would make an appearance. But, I'm not going to ruin the story for you, by saying whether or not she does. ;)

It was great to see the witch Raven pop up again. She's a great character and I love the depth that she can add to events and the mystery she provides. I always know that when she makes an appearance, something really bad, but really good, is going to happen.

I totally had a moment, thanks to Raven, where I sat there reading and did a fist bump, while yelling “PLOT TWIST!” in excitement.

The other side of Iran

This is a really enjoyable read and succeeds on a multitude of levels; it is thought provoking, it is touching, it is laugh-out-loud funny, it is entertaining and it is enlightening. It shatters most of our illusions about Iran and its people; it can be dipped into at random revealing fascinating glimpses of Iran's history, politics, architecture and everyday life, yet really delivers when read and savoured as a whole.

The situations that Maslin encounters on his travels range from the seriously life threatening to the totally unexpected, and often the plain bizarre. The sheer hospitality of its people is a real eye opener. Time and again the Iranians go out of their way to help this intrepid traveller, insisting on paying for his meals, for his drinks and for his taxis, and even insisting that he stay at their houses - just because he is a foreigner in their land and therefore their guest. This has the great benefit that we are able to read about the hidden Iran and how life is lived by its ordinary people, and get to understand their hopes and aspirations, and how they see the west.

This is essential reading if you're planning on visiting Iran - Maslin reveals that it has several international standard ski resorts for instance - but it goes way beyond the tourist locations in the guide books, yet doesn't pull any punches about the Iranian government: Maslin has subsequently been banned from re-entering the Islamic Republic! It should also be mandatory reading if you're a member of a government considering invading Iran.

Very Good Travel Memoir

I thoroughly enjoyed this travel diary about a young Brit who takes an extended tour of Iran on less than $500. He does this mostly because of the incredible generosity of the Iranian people, who never hesitate to offer a meal or a bed to the author, simply because he's a foreigner. As an American constantly inundated with anti-Iranian rhetoric from the media, I found Maslin's experience refreshing and candid. I was lucky enough to get to know a few Iranians in college and always found them to be kind and generous, and this book only reinforces that view.

As I read this memoir I found myself laughing out loud and sharing many funny moments with my wife. Read the book and you'll discover these unexpected details of Iranian life: the popularity of Chris de Burgh and "German rock gods" Modern Talking; the effectiveness of the pick-up line "You are beautiful"; "super film" DVDs; the constant greeting of "Can I help you"?; whisky by the can; super-clean subways; friendly taxi drivers; ice cream-jello deserts; the abundance of old Range Rovers and new Hillman Hunters on the roads. The list goes on.

I also found it interesting that many young Iranians despise their government but love their country. A majority of the country's population is made up of young people, and Maslin effectively shows how these young Iranians accept certain Western values while rejecting others, all of which shows a country that is changing.

Some reviewers here have complained that Maslin's periodic discussions of politics and history don't belong, but I disagree. It's impossible to separate the image of Iran from its role in modern history, and Maslin weaves these brief passages about C.I.A. involvement and the 1979 revolution into places where they seem fitting. For the most part they are accurate and in line with what is commonly held to be true among experts on Iran. My only complaint is Maslin's description of the 1979 attack on the U.S. Embassy in Tehran as a student-led, spontaneous event. In fact, the attack was a carefully orchestrated activity by the Ayatollah that went a long way in damaging Iran's reputation around the world. However, to say this book is anti-American because it points out a few ugly truths about American involvement in Iran is silly and just plain ignorant.

Read this book and you'll learn to appreciate your own culture while seeing what a country like Iran has to offer.

So close to being great!

Admittedly I read books on Iran just because, so the title didn't draw me. Which is good, because who ever thought it up didn't read the book in detail. The author tells a delightful story of his trip through Iran with a sense of humor the British excell at. And Iran is a fascinating place, especially if all you know of it is from the mass media. That said, I'd have liked more insight into the people and places he visited in this ancient, and complex society.

Good reference on the openings

There are basically two popular 1 volume opening reference books, "Nunn's Chess Openings" and "Modern Chess Openings". I have heard many opinions as to which is better. I personally think that each has their individual strong points as to accuracy (I like Nunn better) and better coverage of more of the major openings (I like MCO better). So my advice? Get both and have the best of two worlds. If you are a beginner, or in search of that perfect opening to suit your style then you need a book that covers the ideas behind the openings and should book looking at books that cover that, such as "Understanding the Chess Openings" or a good opening trap book. You want to know the ideas behind the openings and not to just memorize lines.

The Opening Book for the Serious Student

This is the "GrandMaster" of opening books. I am a Master and I teach chess for a living. When my students want to learn an opening, or need a one volume reference for learning new openings, this is the book I recommend to them. A "MUST" for the Postal player! There is more information and fewer mistakes in this book, than any opening compendium I have ever seen! WARNING: If you are a casual chess player, or looking for for a book to help you improve and learn something, this is not the book you seek. This is a book for very serious chess players. If you have never used an opening book before, you will find this book a very difficult "read." Its just lines and recommendations for what is best in the openings. There are a great deal of symbols and lines that end with an evaluation like "White is slightly better." There is nothing that explains why White is better. Unless this type of dialogue would be useful to you, you are better off not buying this book.

I AGREE: EXCELLENT REFERENCE FOR STRONGER PLAYERS

Top Grandmaster analysis, computer-checked, state-of-the-art variations makes NCO an excellent reference for stronger or very serious players. However, BE WARNED, NCO has little or no prose explanations of its evaluations(You've got to figure out why White is better, worse, etc.), neither are "thematic" ideas discussed. And NCO does not give those plausible or discredited lines that Kasparov, Karpov, and Anand would never play but are played by that smug fellow at your local club (So you're still on your own, unless he does you the favor of playing the "best" lines). Finally, unless you're familiar with ECO cataloging, the format isn't all that friendly (You've got to know what the Benko Gambit is to look it up, for example). I am only rated USCF 1940, and prefer more tutorial advice than NCO gives, and really prefer Modern Chess Openings Edition 14 by N. DeFirmian as it also gives one page intros to the major lines (as does NCO) but ALSO gives prose evaluations as to why White is worse, better, etc.. It is also VERY easy to look up openings, and its introductions make one curious to play out an opening. Take a look also at Standard Chess Openings by Schiller which is filled with prose desriptions, discussion, and analysis of the openings, as well as opening tips, repertoire possibilities. The drawback though is that other players claim it is far shallower than either NCO or MCO, as well as being less accurate. I have NCO and MCO, the first is for "status" and the second, for use.
