Excellent Undergrad Text

Overall this is an excellent text for an undergraduate level course. It is the 3rd book on the subject that I've read and the best of the lot. It is much more conprehensive than the others, but does not get into the details of some graduate level books.

The content deserves a 5 star, but I gave it 4 stars overall because of a couple shortcomings. The graphics don't convey the 3 dimensionality of the anatomy. All of my anatomy texts do a far better job representing internal structures, and this becomes extremely important.

2nd, there are some areas overemphasized, some omissions, and a problem with the order of presentation. The chapter on attention tells me that one of the authors researches in this area. Sorry, it doesn't warrant a chapter. You know you're on the wrong track when you spend an entire page just explaining the minutiae of a single experiment. Second, there was no mention of intelligence. Yes it's a hotbutton issue. No excuse for ignoring it. Finally, issues were raised, such as fear or emotions, that use the same structure. It would be helpful to discuss the anatomy in more detail early on instead of introducing structures piecemeal.

Overall an excellent book.

It's a great book for general neuroscience courses

Neuroscience is my future career, and I absolutely value this book. It explains the brain amazingly well for those unfamiliar with the details. Figures and illustrations are fabulous. The text is clear, concise, and thorough. I t always kept my attention while reading. It's a great book for general neuroscience courses! I plan to keep it on my bookshelf for a while!

and the price was excellent. I was surprised that the book appeared to ...

I purchased this book used, and the price was excellent. I was surprised that the book appeared to be new when it arrived (although I did find one page that had underlining written on it). However, after a few days the book started to fall apart. Now that I am three weeks into my course, I am ready to just put all the pages into a binder as they will not stay put. On top of that, I have found errors in the text. Specifically, I noted an incorrect answer in the Self-Check section in the back, so I informed my classmates. It seems that I have a first printing of the text, and some errors have been corrected for subsequent printings, but I have no way of know what corrections have been made. It seems like an errata sheet should have bee published and provided. (The books of some of my classmates did NOT have the wrong answers in the back, and that is a true indication that corrections were made in later printings of the same edition.) I do plan to contact the publisher to ask about an errata sheet, and I recommend anyone purchasing this text used do the same.

This book does a decent job at what it claims...As for the print and binding quality, I will have to rate that pretty poor. Mine has not fallen apart yet, but I have several friends who used the same book for class, and pages are already falling out. Unfortunately, if you have to get the book, I'm not sure there's a way around this, but it's something to expect. It is not (and does not proport to be) an introduction to research generally. It is an intro do Education/Psychology type research involving human subjects. Some of the information such as how to find a journal article you could just find out from a librarian, or by searching around online a bit, but there is a lot of terminology relating to epistemologies, and other field-specific terms for Education/Psyc type research. Overall a decent book, takes a while to get through, but not difficult material by any means.

Be-Bop And More

380 songs from many eras, including a dozen or so Be-Bop tunes by Dexter Gordon or Fats Navarro from the late 1940's The tunes themselves can all be found on either the DEXTER DIGS IN - THE YOUNG DEXTER GORDON CD or the Fats Navarro GOIN' TO MINTON'S CD. The tunes aren't all that fast but have that Be-Bop flavor.

Tadd Dameron's The Tadd Walk also qualifies as Be-Bop and there are others by Tadd as well, Good Bait, Lady Bird, The Casbah.

Also there is a career spanning assortment of almost 30 Gerry Mulligan tunes.

There are over 20 original Jazz tunes recorded by Blue Note Records during the 1950's and 60's including the full version of Dat Dere from THE BIG BEAT - Blakey.

Fifty-something Daisy Andalusia sorts and organizes the clutter of her New Haven, Conn., neighbors for a living, a profession that perfectly complements her affinity for secrets. Married to a man she's not sure she loves, she becomes romantically involved with a client entirely unlike her husband. A tabloid headline she reads while at work, "Two-Headed Woman Weds Two Men," accounts for the title of the book, inspires a community theater production that establishes new and unexpected bonds among its participants and illustrates Daisy's dual role as wife and lover, or, as she puts it, a "woman who's good half the time." When her affair loses its initial momentum, Daisy must struggle to find purpose and connection through her work and weigh the appeal of a lover with no secrets versus that of a husband with many. Mattison's fascination with relationships, the perennial subject of her critically acclaimed fiction (The Book Borrower; Men Giving Money, Women Yelling; etc.), lies in their complication; indeed, Daisy may thrive on the "unresolved." Engrossing and Insightful

I really might have given this book a four-star rating, because I would be inclined to save the five-star ratings for Faulkner-level fiction, but I wanted to offset the tepid reviews of other readers. I liked this book a lot.

I picked the book off the shelf for its bizarre title, and I was very glad that I did. This book works wonderfully on a number of levels---I will be thinking about it for quite some time. It's not your typical easy-read mystery novel, but it is nonetheless extremely engaging. It's deep enough to satisfy my English major origins, and accessible enough to hold me to the end, despite my overloaded lifestyle and constant interruptions from my children. This is an extremely insightful book that rings very true, both emotionally and philosophically.

The themes---or, rather, what I perceived as the themes---are complex and thought-provoking. The author doesn't dole out easy answers to moral and philosophical questions---life doesn't work that way, and neither should literature. What are some of the themes, as I perceive them? Oh, well........Personal moral responsibility, loyalty, the interconnectedness of human beings, moral relativity, emotional intimacy, how one judges the "goodness" of another human being, the emotional fall-out from keeping (or not keeping secrets), intellectual snobbery, the purpose of art..... I may be completely off base, but these are the issues that this book raised in my mind. Oh, and I disagree with the person who found the book bizarre. The characters, and even the plot, rang very true for me.

Whether you like or dislike this book, I predict that it will be very memorable for you.

One of the best writers I had never heard of before

Unlike most of the other people who wrote reviews here, I was racing home from work each day to devour more of this book. I love Mattison's writing, and the voice of her complicated main character in this novel is easy to hear and endlessly interesting to listen to. Although I'm not sure I would like Daisy in real life, I couldn't put this book down because I loved having access to the internal struggles and seeing how they often contrasted with her actual actions.

Although I sometimes found Daisy's choices illogical or hard to understand, I think that is the point of this sort of book: it's a specific character study, as much as it is a collection of observations about human nature in general. The slightly fragmented style of the story didn't bother me at all, because I had no trouble keeping up, and in general I like nonlinear stories. (note: LA Confidential, the movie, was way too fragmented for me).

Daisy is a fragmented, complicated person, and she is the one telling the story, so it makes sense that the stories are a little bit fragmented and interwoven. That's how real women are! I think Mattison has real insights that more readers should enjoy.

Something Different

A very original if flawed book. The character is obstinately real, honest, even as annoying as some people we know. Auden's line, "You will love your crooked neighbor with your croooked heart" comes to mind. The parallel story of the play-within-a-novel doesn't work terribly well, and it doesn't begin to resonate with the depths of the dimensions in Mattison's The Book Borrower. September 11 jumps in, a Deus Ex Machina, to save the plot with Something Really Important. Still, a very compelling and refreshing read.

Caveat Lector!

Caveat Lector! Carandini spins quite a tall tale in this book...but that's all it is—a work of fiction. Readers with a serious interest in early Rome are advised to read T.P Wiseman's review of this book in The Classical Journal ("Carandini's handsome little book offers no more than an enjoyable fantasy,") and Wiseman's longer expose of Carandini's other (Italian-language) books, "Reading Carandini," in The Journal of Roman Studies, which more closely examines Carandini's methodology (such as it is) and his personal motivations for advancing his idiosyncratic notions. Readers interested in rigorous history (as opposed to sheer fantasy) will find more substance in Cornell's The Beginnings of Rome and Wiseman's Remus: A Roman Myth.

A different sort of Roman scholarship

I gave "Rome, Day One" three stars with a heavy heart, because the book IS interesting. Having read anglo historians on ancient Rome, I have found it refreshing to be able to read an Italian archeological perspective and, besides, the often too dismissive historian view of Roman ancient tradition is unconvincing. Andrea Carandini believes that there is a structured core of truth about the Remus and Romulus story of the foundation of Rome, and he describes, with more detail than anybody else I've read, how the foundation could have happened. The illustrations are black, white and gray toned, but they are a banquet for the hungry eyes of everybody curious about how Rome really was like in the beginning. If other professional historians understood the power of illustration as Carandini does, their books would be so much better appreciated than they are!

The book has two aims: first, as stated above, to mix tradition and archeology in order to recreate the foundation of Rome, and the second is to present Rome, together with Greece, as distinct in terms of political organization from the ancient eastern states and empires, the democratic versus totalitarian roots of, respectively, the "West"and the "East" (indeed, Carandini extends this distinction to our own days in his "Conclusion", in a oversimplified manner).

The first objective is met finely, albeit with the same dismissiveness towards alternative views that historians show to the traditional account. I would like to know who thinks differently and why, and thus I probably would appreciate more Carandini's views. Instead, throughout the book, Carandini frequently reminds us that he has been excavating in the area for twenty years. Although this is not the only argument supporting his views, it feels like the number of years is very important in the matter, at least to him. It is and it is not, because one could have excavated for 40 years and end up finding little, while one luck digging season... Anyway, my point is that I would like to see more explaining and less bragging.

Another thing that bothered me is that he rarely mentions anybody else's archeological efforts, and he writes as if everything of importance have been found by him and his team. Maybe it is so, but maybe it isn't.

Finally, the author would have much helped his argument if he further clarified the comparison between early Roman foundation traditions and those that appeared after the Greek introduction of Troy, Aeneas, and other such characters in the story. He should have done it because the book is not for the specialist. This is very important because it would have supported his choice of sources for the traditional account.

Bottom line: if you like to read about the history of Rome, particularly early Rome, you must read this book, because it is so fascinating. Only be prepared for a different sort of scholarship than that of British and American historians.

Hard work if you're not an archaeologist or historian

I'm star rating this item three because I suspect it is, in fact, an excellent piece of work for its intended audience of scholars, historians and archaelogists. It's not really fair for myself - a layman just interested in the history of Rome - to grade it according to my own lack of understanding, bust Amazon requires I add a rating, so three it is...

What I will say is this, the book is somewhat mis-marketed. Everything about its layout, cover art, blurb and design suggests that the reader is in for an engaging, argumentative, perhaps journalistic style laymans book. What it actually is, however, is a rather dense archaelogical thesis that I found somewhat slow-going and very difficult to comprehend. There's no narrative here, only a lot of challenging and dry scholarly description.

Here is a brief example:

"The King Augur and in(du)perator (Ennius), who had auxiliaries and a mounted guard, was potentissimus both with the priestly order - composed of the flamines of the divine triad and the five pontifices, in addition to the vestal virgins - and with respect to the Quirites gathering in the Comitia Calata and curiata where the king stated his ius, and from which bodies his army was formed."

If you had a hard time with that sentence then you'll have a hard time with the rest of the book.

As I stated I'm only entering this review as a warning for the lay readers who may be seeking something more narrative based and engaging. From a scholars perspective, though, it seems very good - lots of fascinating maps and diagrams of the dig sites and the corresponding foundation texts are well-sourced from primary sources such as Livy, Ovid and Plutarch. Actually the last thirty or so pages of the book is the appendix of the original texts from these sources and, in my opinion, made for a more engaging read than the book itself.

About the Author

Doug McGuff, MD, FAAEM became interested in exercise, diet, and human performance at the age of 15 when he took up weight training to improve his performance in the sport of bicycle motocross. While trading janitorial services for a membership at a Nautilus gym, he stumbled upon Arthur Jones’ Nautilus Training Bulletin No. 2. In 1989, he graduated from the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio; he went on to train in emergency medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences at Little Rock, where he served as Chief Resident. From there, Dr. McGuff served as faculty in the Wright State University Emergency Medicine Residency and was a staff emergency physician at Wright-Patterson AFB Hospital.� In 1995, Dr. McGuff completed his tour of duty in the Air Force and became a partner in Blue Ridge Emergency Physicians, P.A. in Seneca, South Carolina.�In 1997, he realized a lifelong dream when he opened Ultimate Exercise, a personal training studio specializing in state-of-the-art high intensity exercise.

Robert P. Murphy has a Ph.D. in economics from New York University. After teaching at Hillsdale College, Murphy left academia to work in the financial sector. In 2007, Murphy started his own firm, Consulting By RPM, where he specializes in teaching economic principles and analyzing government policies for the general public. Murphy is affiliated with several non-profit organizations devoted to economic education, including the Institute for Energy Research, the Fraser Institute, the Mises Institute, and the Independent Institute.�

The authors affably providee simple explanations to complicated topics and do an excellent job of giving analogies and scenarios

Drs. McGuff and Murphy shed light on the little-known history of the American Medical system and in the process provide an eye-opening appraisal of the problems and absurdities of the present state of affairs. I suspect very few people are aware of the historical facts of American health care and fewer still have an understanding of the complex and sinister economic latticework that subsumes insurance, doctors, the FDA, pharma, and hospitals. The authors affably providee simple explanations to complicated topics and do an excellent job of giving analogies and scenarios to help us understand the real consequences of entering the "belly of the beast". Most importantly, they offer incredibly helpful, actionable solutions to the serious problems discussed therein.

Some of the topics of the book include how the medical establishment got to its current doomed state, how the FDA is far more dangerous than we all suspect, how the current health care paradigm amounts to a Ponzi scheme, why health care and health insurance are not remotely the same thing, how to become knowledgable about medical screenings and medications, and, critically, how to make necessary lifestyle and diet changes to take back control of your health.

There's so much great information in the book but its most salient message is that we (all of us) must take immediate responsibility for our health and that we can all learn how to be the genuine captains of our own "health care team" by adopting a primally (or paleo) inspired lifestyle.

As a side note, as a Canadian with access to one of the most revered health care systems in the world, I think a book like is an important cautionary tale of how quickly things can deteriorate in any health care program under the right (wrong) circumstances and how we must never rest on our laurels with respect to medicare.

A excellent book that is, in my mind, required reading for all.

US Healthcare: History, Politics, Economics, and How You Can Manage Your Health in the Modern System

Your benefit from reading this book is determined by your expectations. The title, Primal Prescription, hearkens to the 'Primal' book series and world-view brain-child of Mark Sisson (who also wrote the forward). The second half of the book focuses on educating readers in responsible medical decision-making in line with the 'Primal' goal of engendering personal health. However, do not make the mistake of reading this book to understand the 'Primal' philosophy. I know that this is a gripe with some reviews, but they should understand that this is beyond the scope of the book. Go read the original if you want to learn about 'Primal' living. That being said, having never been exposed to the 'Primal' ideas myself, I didn't feel as if I missed out on anything.

The major theme of this book combines libertarian worldview and the Primal philosophy: Just as government intervention in free-markets leads to lower standards of living, modern human lifestyles that go against our evolutionary history lead to negative health outcomes.

This book is mainly divided into two parts: (1) The history, politics, and economic reasoning of interventionism in US healthcare, and (2) what individual patients can do to improve and protect themselves within (or outside) of the system. Here is the table of contents to get a good idea of the book contents:

Many of the theoretical economic arguments will be familiar to free-market oriented readers, but Dr. Murphy goes through great lengths to interpret statistics from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO - aka: the government) and shows how many of the conclusions are skewed and cherry-picking data. In particular, Chapter 5 - the inner logic - is stream of logical reasoning reminiscent of Economics in One Lesson by Hazlitt that demonstrates the necessary existence of various parts of the ACA

The second half can be thought of more as a handbook on how to manage your personal health than anything else. While I cannot personally relate because I am young and rarely require medical services, I know that these chapters are critical to patients who actually want to take control of their personal and financial health. This includes topics in how to find the right (aka free-market, similar health goals) doctor and how to navigate your way through hospital systems.

As Dr. McGuff points out: "If you are concerned about the direction of the country, as you should be, then the single best thing you can do for its future is to make sure your household is healthy." All liberty lovers and those concerned with the best for themselves and their families will benefit from The Primal Prescription because "Whether in markets, human health, or interpersonal relationships, the great news is that we don't have to choose between idealism and pragmatism. Freedom and independence are appealing aesthetically, but they also work."

Sick Care indeed.

If you want a non-partisan explanation of what is wrong with the American health care system and what you can do to try to protect yourself as much as possible this book is a good place to start. Murphy, the Economist, leads us through the no doubt well meaning politics and laws that have brought the health care system to the brink of collapse. Both Republicans and Democrats share the blame here. McGuff, the M.D., regales us with stories of the problems doctors and hospitals are faced with and provides advice on how to navigate the broken system as much as possible. What I got from reading this book is if you are healthy do everything possible to stay that way. If you are enmeshed in the system due to ill health there is valuable information here for you regarding drugs and diet.
