Avery Johnson is a teacher, a leader, sometimes even a preacher, but most of all, he is a motivator; driving his team to new heights. He was named coach-of-the-year in 2006 in just his first year as head coach and in 2007 his team is on the brink of winning the NBA championship. His spirited and inspirational book is for anyone looking for the tools and secrets of success; anyone looking to win. Johnson grew up in New Orleans' Lafitte Housing Project and though he was never the biggest, the fastest, or the strongest, like many he dreamed that basketball was his ticket out. Johnson's journey is most inspiring because his success did not fit the script society wrote for him, but by strength of his will alone he was able to persevere and reach the NBA where he played for sixteen seasons. Now as a coach, his style takes into account the road that got him here and is a true outline for success on the court and in life. It revolves around two main themes; the first is the foundation for the Mavericks success and is called the 'S Plan' and based on three simple concepts: Standards, Safeguards, and Satisfaction. The second called the 'C Plan' is used to motivate his players into becoming championship leaders by taking on competence, strong character, clear communication, respect for colleagues, and caring.

About the Author
Avery Johnson was an NBA player for sixteen seasons, including a member of the 1999 Spurs Championship team. He is only the second player under 6-feet in height to play more than 1,000 games. At 5-11 and 180 pounds he was undrafted out of college, but signed as a free agent with the Seattle SuperSonics before being cut and then playing with San Antonio, Denver, Houston and back to San Antonio. He spent his last few seasons with the Denver Nuggets, Golden State, and signed with Dallas as a player/coach prior to the 2004-05 season, but decided to retire as player and concentrate on being an assistant coach before the season started. In 2006 he was named NBA Coach of The Year. He and his family live in Dallas.

Roy S. Johnson is a longtime SI editor and writer and he wrote Charles Barkley's first memoir. He lives in New York.

Fantastic!

I recommend this book to everyone from a teenager on, even to retirement age. It gives food for thought, gets you back on the road of your goals in life, and makes you realize you can accomplish anything your want, if the real desire is there.
I am not a sport fan, but Avery Johnson is a person that has a voice that makes you listen to what he has to say. When the sports comes on and I hear his voice, I stop and listen. I am so glad that he is using his life in a positive way, and when I heard that he had a book out, I had to buy it. Not only was I not disappointed, I want everyone in my family to read it. My Grand Children, as they are starting their lives in the world will benefit, if they will only listen to what he has to say and the other members of my family, it will give them a boast to keep on the right track and have patience!
A must read book for everyone!

Great Lessons to build on!!!

Avery Johnson was just another guy who got overlooked in life. He had determination and discipline to keep moving forward when things didn't always go his way. He bounced around from team to team, but he never gave up in God and in himself to succeed at a high level. It teaches us all that we are capable of great things as long as we stay focused, persevere and always look to God in all that we do.

Welcome to Linux Administration

When I first picked up Linux, there were no books. The readmes were thin and the available help was limited. That was then. Today, I am constantly bombarded by friends that say "You're into Linux, how do I..." And worse, at work, the developers are constantly coming to me to get help with basic administration tasks. I hand them Wale's book.

This is the sort of book you want if:

1) You have some Linux experience and want to take the next step, either to administer your own site or improve your job skills to move into professional administration.

2) You are already an administrator of that "other" operating system and want to know what all the fuss is about.

3) You are expanding your Linux administration skills beyond the basic start, stop, break, fix model.

What this book will not help you with is setting up your X environment. Wale takes you in depth, but expects you to do it on the command line. The power of Linux is on the command line, so there is no "click here, click there" type instruction. You spend your time at the pound sign, where real administration is done.

The new version covers the core stuff: DNS, Mail, Web services, backup, installation, and package management. But it doesn't stop there. New core services, like LDAP, Distributed File Systems, and Virtualization (KVM, Virtual Box and QEMU) are covered as well as installations via flash drives.

The other thing that distinguishes the book is that it does not pick favorites. This is a book about LINUX administration, not Red Hat administration or Ubuntu administration. It is about Linux administration, and while Wale covers the subtle differences between them when there is a difference, it is about teaching the skills that an administrator needs to administer a Linux system, regardless of distribution, package management strategy, or GUI tool sets.

This is a book for administrators, by administrators. No fluff about setting up your speakers, or how to connect your video camera. This is about building and running servers in data centres. If this is your job, or you want to make it your job, then this is your entry point. If you are already a skilled administrator, keep a copy on your shelf to loan out to those who need to learn more.

A good beginning

I've had several false starts getting into linux over the years. I think the more conversational tone the Author takes makes it easier to get through compared to some of the textbook-like tomes I've tried before. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it speaks more to a character deficiency on my part when a tech book lays out all the facts and instructions competently but I can't get through it because the writing is too dry.

With books aimed at "beginners" who aren't true beginners (some existing experience with other operating systems is assumed) the right level of detail is difficult to balance. Too little and the reader won't fully understand the subject matter. Too much and he gets bogged down in low level details and has trouble seeing the big picture. I think the author (or editor?) does a good job of laying down a foundation of understanding without giving too much unnecessary information.

This book has no fluff. The Author dives right into Linux Administration. This book in spite of it being 'filled' with formula and commentary is not dry. It is an enjoyable read! The author is clear on each point and you won't be left to fiend for yourself on subjects in this book. I would give this book 10 stars if I could. The only problem I have with the book is the continual mention of Windows which is understandable for those coming from a Windows background, however, some of us could care less how Windows does things. However annoying, its not distracting enough to pitch a heebee jeebee fit about! I think this book is one of the best out there! Wale, thanks for your contribution!

About the Author
Philip A. Hastings is Professor of Marine Biology and Curator of Marine Vertebrates at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego. His studies include the systematics and phylogeny of fishes, marine biogeography, ecology and behavioral evolution of fishes, and marine conservation biology.

H. J. Walker, Jr., is a Senior Museum Scientist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego. His research and interests include the taxonomy, systematics, and zoogeography of marine fishes and the observation of these fishes in their natural environments.

Grantly R. Galland is�a recent graduate of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego. He studies the ecology of fishes and works to implement successful conservation and policy strategies for protecting the marine environment.

Perfect companion for an Ichthyology course

I am currently teaching an Ichthyology course, and this is the book that I used as required reading. It is great for classes, particularly because the figures are based on preserved specimens. This makes it an invaluable resource for students because it serves as an excellent reference for how real preserved specimens of fishes look, particularly for the lineages of fishes one may potentially include in a lab. No it does not provide detailed information for all 500+ families of fishes, but that is certainly not the goal of this book. It is absolutely the perfect companion for an Ichthyology course that is focused on the evolution and biodiversity of fishes.

I highly recommended this book to anyone that teaches courses on the biodiversity of fishes, or as a general reference. Having a focus on preserved specimens alone makes it an interesting and unique addition as an ichthyology resource.

Highly Recommended!

I have been studying fish biology for twenty years, and I teach the ichthyology class at a large state university. I cannot convey how much I like this book or how excited I was after reading it. There are few fully developed resources for ichthyology classes. There are a few ichthyology textbooks that are adequate, but they just don't cover the material that I want to cover in my class. And forget about any resources for the laboratory component of my class beyond a dogfish dissection guide. Well this book has changed all of that. This book is, without exaggeration, exactly the book I need for my ichthyology lab. This will be the one required text that I have the students purchase for future ichthyology classes (and the price is absolutely reasonable to downright cheap). This is an excellent reference, and I love the use of high quality photos of real preserved specimens. When you are teaching a specimen-based class having these real photos of preserved specimens is critical and it counts for a lot. Beyond the images, the text provides diagnostic characters for hundreds of families as well as a diversity of natural history, biology, and evolutionary information (including a vast literature cited) that students will love. Beyond an ichthyology class, this is also a great resource for training undergraduates starting in my lab. I can hand them a specimen, and they can work through the pictures to get close to a family-level identification, eventually using the diagnostic features to identify the fish's family. It is a large commitment to develop a working knowledge of fish families, but this book goes a long way toward giving new researchers the building blocks necessary to create that foundation. I cannot say enough great things about the book. It is an absolute must have for any professor or student interested in ichthyology or anyone interested in the diversity of fishes. I recommend it without any reservations.

An Instant Classic

As a self-identified naturalist, I buy a lot of zoological guides. I expected this book to be like a traditional field guide with some rough identification hints and a little bit of natural history. It is so much more than I expected. It does a fantastic job of showing the key characters for many of the group. Better yet, it actually does this on photos of actual specimens rather than drawings, which makes it much more valuable because drawings can be so idealized. But what really surprised me was how this book actually allowed me to get into the literature on fishes better. I have had the hardcopy book for a couple of months now, and I have used it to explore some groups that I knew nothing about. It provides easy access to a somewhat complicated literature. On a related note, what I think is particularly great about this book is that the authors have presented the work such that it is somewhat immune to the ongoing higher-level changes in fish classification. By focusing on the family level for the core information and providing references to recent literature at the family level and above, the book will remain useful and great for fish identification for the next 10 years. Anyone interested in the diversity, evolution, and natural history of fishes should buy this book; it will be a classic!

On the publication quality side, the hardcover is great. I worried that it would be a dust jacket covered book, which would be terrible for laboratory or field use. Instead it is a true printed on hardcover. The color printing is high quality, emphasizing the preserved colors of the diversity of fishes (which greatly aids identification...). The text is remarkably error free and the print quality is fantastic.

Still haunting after all these years.

One of the most seductive of all ghost stories, Turn of the Screw is a sophisticated and subtle literary exercise in which the author creates a dense, suggestive, and highly ambiguous story, its suspense and horror generated primarily by what the author does NOT say and does not describe. Compelled to fill in the blanks from his/her own store of personal fears, the reader ultimately conjures up a more horrifying set of images and circumstances than anything an author could impose from without.

Written in 1898, this is superficially the tale of a governess who accepts the job of teaching two beautiful, young children whose uncle-guardian wants nothing to do with them. On a symbolic level, however, it is a study of the mores and prejudices of the times and, ultimately, of the nature of Evil. The governess fears that ghosts of the former governess Miss Jessel and her lover, valet Peter Quint, have corrupted the souls of little Flora and Miles and have won them to the side of Evil. The children deny any knowledge of ghosts, and, in fact, only the governess actually sees them. Were it not for the fact that the housekeeper, Mrs. Grose, can identify them from the governess's descriptions, one might be tempted to think that the governess is hallucinating.

Though the governess is certainly neurotic and repressed, this novel was published ten years before Freud, suggesting that the story should be taken at face value, as a suspenseful but enigmatic Victorian version of a Faustian struggle for the souls of these children, yet numerous other interpretations find their ardent supporters as well. Assembling an assortment of scholarly, critical essays on this ambiguous novel, editor Peter Beidler provides a variety of other interpretations, ranging from psychosexual to feminist and materialist. The authors of each of these interpretations find ample material in James's ambiguities to support their own interpretations, since James himself never provided any explanations. The editor's fascinating collection of interpretations of James's most elusive novel make this is a fine resource for serious students. Mary Whipple

This book is absolutely awesome. It gives you the complete story plus a number of very insightful essays about the story. I've learned more from this one publication about The Turn of the Screw than I have from the cumulation of all my other sources combined.

The book is divided in 11 chapters:

Each chapter comes with a jam track. It is very easy; choose a lick and play it over the chapter's jam track. You can play as many licks as you want from the same chapter, and use them in no particular order. Though each chapter has its own jam track, you can use a different one by transposing the licks to the new key; transposition is specified in each section. Every lick is written in Standard Notation and TAB. Audio Files are included for you to listen how the lick is supposed to sound like; the download link is located inside the book.

About the Author
Matias Rengel is a graduate of Berklee College of Music, where he majored in Music Production and Engineering. He has been playing guitar since 1999.
At Berklee, he studied with some of the best teachers around the world, including Tim Miller, Norman Zocher, Jim Kelly, David Fiuczynski and Andrew Maness. He was also part of the Berklee Singers Showcase which features some of the most talented musicians in school. His recordings and productions were among the best, having one of them selected for the annual MP&E showcase.
As an entrepreneur, Matias co-founded ExpressDrummer.com - a collection of high quality Drum Samples recorded and mixed by him. He has also published "The Audition Guide", a book that helps Berklee applicants prepare for their audition.
Matias currently resides in Boston, MA, where he plays with People The Kangaroo, an electronic indie band. He is also working on his first solo album as an EDM producer, which will be released in 2015.
