The Famous Heroine/The Plumed Bonnet (Dark Angel), by Mary Balogh

Beloved New York Times bestselling author Mary Balogh spins two classic stories of Regency England—splendid novels of mistaken identity and unmistakable passion, where marriage is only the beginning of true love.

THE FAMOUS HEROINE
Cora Downes has beauty, spirit, and money, but no breeding. Yet when she gains renown for a daring rescue, she finds herself thrust into high society. Innocent and adrift in a world of beautiful banquets, bejeweled gowns, and snobbish standards, Cora is quickly compromised into a marriage—to a frivolous lord whose interests seem to lie elsewhere. But could piercingly blue-eyed and well-mannered Francis Kneller turn out to be the most unexpected love of her life?

THE PLUMED BONNET
Alistair Munro, the Duke of Bridgwater, is looking for love outside the bounds of polite society. And that’s what he expects to receive when he rescues a seemingly disreputable girl in a colorful bonnet off the side of the road. Yet Stephanie Gray, a former governess, has recently come into money and is eager for a proper match with a well-born man. Sure that he’s sullied her name, Alistair offers marriage to make amends. And in this unlikely union, Stephanie and Alistair make a welcome discovery—that sometimes it’s possible to marry first, then fall in love.

An enjoyable trip back to 1990s Signet Regencies.
By OLT
These two stories tie in nicely as sequels to Dark Angel/Lord Carew's Bride, re-released together in February 2010. Although, for me, Balogh's superior work is found in her longer "Slightly" series, a few of the "Simply" books, and perhaps my personal favorite, The Secret Pearl, her shorter Signet Regencies from the 1990s are top-of-the-line in that category and make for a feel-good read.

THE FAMOUS HEROINE is the story of Cora Downes, whose family has money but no blue blood. She "rescues" the nephew of the Duke of Bridgwater from drowning and is taken on by the duke's mother as a project to be introduced to society and married off to someone eligible, but not super blue-blooded. This story is funny, starts off delightfully and I found myself chuckling many times. The hero, Lord Francis Kneller, younger son of a duke, is the suitor rejected by Samantha in LORD CAREW'S BRIDE and he's still nursing a broken heart. He befriends Cora as a favor to his friend Bridgwater and finds her to be a pleasant distraction from his misery and entertaining company.

Now, Francis favors wearing clothes of all the colors of the rainbow, pink, puce, turquoise, vivid green, you name it, dressed up with lace and elaborately-tied cravats, and he's always immaculately coiffed. Cora, who is totally intimidated by most members of the ton, finds herself comfortable in his company. She also mistakes his sexual orientation, so she enjoys him as a friend and not as a possible suitor. It's all good fun, but somewhere past the halfway point of the story, I was beginning to tire of Cora's ineptness in society and Francis's broken heart, so it wasn't a 5-star romance for me, in spite of the good writing and the satisfying ending.

THE PLUMED BONNET is a bit more angsty and I enjoyed it more. It's another upper-class/middle-class romance, but less humorous. Balogh always does a good job of convincing the reader that young, handsome, rich dukes of excellent character existed in Regency England and that romance with a lovely heroine of lesser breeding would have challenges but is perfectly doable (at least by the end of the story). Her Cinderella stories have always appealed to me more than those of other writers using the same theme, perhaps because of her sympathetic characters and the trademark Balogh style of writing.

Our hero here is the Duke of Bridgwater, of the family that sponsored Cora in the first story. He's on the road traveling and meets up with hitchhiking (Imagine that!) heroine Stephanie Gray. Stephanie is respectable but impoverished and had been working as a governess when she was informed that she has inherited property and lots of money. Instead of waiting for the transportation which was to be sent for her, she sets off on her own but mishaps along the way have her penniless and unable to continue her journey to Sindon Park, her inheritance. She even loses her own cloak and bonnet and is forced to wear a borrowed fuchsia cloak and pink bonnet with pink, fuchsia and purple plumes. In her moneyless desperation she is walking to her destination, without even coins to purchase a meal for herself.

Alistair, the duke, spies her walking the road. Well, she's hard to miss in that get-up. He's bored and feeling unsatisfied with his life so, mistaking her for a lady of ill-repute, he decides to spice up his life with her company and offers her a ride. The rest you just have to read. The beginning is a lot of fun, what with the mistaken impressions both have of each other. When circumstances force Alistair to offer marriage to Stephanie, the rest of the book is about the expectations they have for each other, the importance of communication, and the need to be true to who you are. The characters are well-drawn and sympathetic, the writing is excellent and the ending is just about perfect.

a great buy: two memorable romances
By An Amazon Customer
Mary Balogh is an exceptional writer. Though these are not my favorite romances by
Balogh, they are very entertaining. Likeable characters, solid plots, a detailed world,
plus excellent command of language make these novels easy 5's. They continue the story
started in Dark Angel/Lord Carew's Bride. In Dark Angel,
Samantha Newman plays a secondary part, hurt by a villain. In Lord Carew's
Bride, Samantha is the heroine. She marries Lord Carew (shortly after meeting him) and
rejects Lord Kneller (who had pursued her for years). The Duke of Bridgwater
and Kneller (though Kneller certainly was badly hurt by Samantha's rejection) helped
Samantha's match with Carew.

In The Famous Heroine, the Duke of Bridgwater asks Kneller (his close friend)
to help Bridgwater's mother launch a young woman Cora Downes into society. Cora has no
pretensions to any noble lineage, but her father is a very wealthy merchant.
Bridgwater's mother, who is very class conscious, wants to help Cora get an
acceptable marriage, because she "saved" the life of Bridgwater's heir's
heir. "Save" is in quotes because the story of Cora's heroism has gotten ridiculously out of
hand. Ultimately Cora's disregard of convention leads to a forced marriage to
Kneller. Cora likes Kneller, but is convinced for silly reasons, that he will not be able
to father children (and all that goes with it, which though she is unclear on
what it all is, she would prefer to have it than not). Everything works out (of course).

In The Plumed Bonnet, Bridgwater, who is very sophisticated and urbane gets
hoisted by his own petard into a forced marriage with the Stephanie Gray.
There is a lot of humor here, which I will not spoil. Stephanie is a
poorly-treated governess, who inherited great wealth with an unpleasant
proviso that she needed to be quickly married part. She had resigned herself
to a life without love or the companionship of marriage, and the forced
nature of the marriage makes her doubt that marriage to Bridgwater will be in
name only. This being a Balogh romance, the doubts are eventually quashed.)

Delicious

I want more stars to give The Famous Heroine.

Love, love, love this book. Regencies often feature a misunderstanding between the main characters as they work forward towards a good relationship, and this misunderstanding is a dozy. The heroine assumes that the hero is gay, up to and including their wedding night.

Lord Francis Kneller, the rejected suitor from Lord Carew's Bride, and surely the most charming of Balogh's heroes, agrees to help bring cit Cora Downes, sponsored by the Duchess of Bridgewater after saving her small grandson from drowning, into fashion and in the process becomes embroiled in many of the impetuous Cora's "unfortunate" escapades, many of which simply seem to happen to her.

Filled with delightful farce and humor and people who actually like each other.

Francis' wise decision to be amused by Cora instead of offended by her makes him a happy man. A good object lesson in how we can all make our lives happy by how we decide to respond to what we cannot control in our lives.

I am looking forward to rereading this one in a few years. Right up there with the best of Georgette Heyer.

The only reason I'm writing this review is to say don't give up on the author
By teriwu
oh my god this was so bad. If this was the only thing is ever read by Kristen Proby I would have never read another word by her. This was so 80's old school "oh take me right now" romance. If this was meant to entice me to read the series it did not work. Kristen Proby's "With Me In Seattle" series is smart, sophisticated and lovable with tons of romance, family and friends.. Read that instead.

Grace and Jacob are on fire!!
By Tiffany Williams
"I've known the woman for a matter of hours and I'm ready to offer her the world."

I got such a thrill reading this story!!

Not that it was just a great love story, which it was, but I loved Grace!! It's good to see a klutzy girl take center stage and not in an embarassing way! It was like reading my own life! ;)

When she's given the gift of skiing lessons from her friends, she can't refuse a free weekend. But when she meets her ski instructor...all bets are off. This will be a weekend she will never forget.

"Holy Jesus on a stick, the man has a British accent. And cue the wet panties."

Like seriously!! Jacob made my heart flutter all because I felt like I could hear his accent and his words...LAWD!! Not only could he teach an usteady Grace how to ski, he could also sweep her off her feet in a matter of hours.

Grace and Jacob had chemistry off the charts! They saw something in one another that attracted them so quickly.

Who doesn't enjoy a "love at first sight" love story?!

"You are beautiful. Are you ready?"
"Hold on, I'm not done."
"Done with what?"
"Looking."
"Keep looking at me like that, and I'll push my way into your room, uninvited as it stands right now in my mind you, and take you up against the wall."

I mean, WOWZA! The man has a way with words! I would have been putty in his hands too! hehe.

I truly enjoyed the short story very much! This was the first story in this series by Kristen Proby I have read. Now I want to read them all! Wonderful characters!

Can't wait to read more!!

"Grace, you're making it very difficult for me to be a gentleman."
"I thought I made I quite clear that I didn't want you to be a gentleman."
"I need you to be sure, love."
"I'm so sure, babe."

Delightful Read!!
By RedsRomanceReviews
Grace Douglas naturally assumed her friends were planning a weekend at a trendy island resort for a girls only getaway, for her friends Bachelorette party, and boy was she wrong. Instead of fun in the sun on a sandy beach, they would be staying at a trendy mountain resort surrounded by snow, and ski slopes. It was the last thing she would voluntarily sign herself up for, which is why her friends have chosen to band together and guilt her into going. Knowing that she doesn't know how to ski, they figure the best way to make her comfortable with this whole situation is to sign her up for ski lessons. They have her best interests at heart, and all think she is in desperate need of some fun, and hope that some fun on the slopes may lead to a opportunity for her to find a little romance too...

Jacob Berkley has recently purchased a trendy mountain resort and is quite pleased with its success so far, and is willing to make sure his guests are treated to the best service possible. While doing his morning rounds he is mistaken for a ski instructor by one of his guests, and while he shouldn't mislead her, he just isn't quite ready to correct her. Something about her intrigues him, so he decides spending one day on the slopes with her can't hurt...

This short, but oh so sweet and charming story captivated my attention right from the start and held on tight until the very end. It was a very enjoyable read that had me smiling and blushing the whole way through! Ms. Proby has another hit on her hands with this one!

From Publishers Weekly
One night, Gwyn asked his sister Bethan to go up the mountain and rescue his ewe; she was never seen again. Now he is 10, still blamed by his father for Bethan's disappearance, and wonders if his grandmother's hints that he is a magician could possibly be true. If he is, he wants to use his powers to get Bethan back. A girl, in fact, arrives in the village, so similar in her ways to Bethan that her presence acts as a salve on the family's wounds. And Gwyn, with the overeagerness of an apprentice, unleashes the darker side of his magic. Nimmo's story, set in the Welsh countryside, contains elements of SF and fantasy, but it's firmly grounded in very real themes of blame and responsibility. She displays a mastery of family nuancesthe little rituals that can keep a family whole or tear it apart if those same gestures are ignored or forgotten. Ages 10-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7 Gwyn's birthday is the anniversary of his sister's unexplained disappearance. Nain, Gwyn's grandmother, presents him with a collection of strange items including a brooch which eventually turns into a silver spider. Nain, either mad or a witch, looks for special powers of the ancestral magicians to be found again in Gwyn and tries to convince him that the magicians of the old Welsh legends are reborn in him. As the snow spider spins webs that reveal another world, Gwyn comes to understand that he is a magician, and he yearns for his heart's desire, the return of his sister. A new classmate enters his life and is befriended by his family. She is surely Bethan, the sister who had been taken to the other world seen in the web. The occurances of arcane and bizarre wonders increase extravagantly, almost out of control. But the reality of Gwyn, his parents, and the Welsh setting give this fantasy equilibrium and an appealing warmth. The pace is brisk and captivating. A good choice to lead into ``The Dark Is Rising'' series (Macmillan) by Susan Cooper. Lucy Hawley, Wescott School Library, Northbrook, Ill.

Real Welsh Tales in a Real Welsh Countryside
By Pop Bop
To me, the gold standard for the retelling of authentic Welsh stories in a modern Wales is Susan Cooper's "Dark is Rising" series. It is to all others what the Harry Potter series is to other youth wizard fantasies.

That said, Nimmo's "Magician Trilogy" is a worthy contender. While Cooper accomplished a grand retelling of the entire Arthur cycle in the context of the modern world, Nimmo attempts the more modest task of reworking a single Welsh story about honor and revenge, as well as bits and pieces of other Welsh tales, into a modern magical fantasy. That's still quite an order, but Nimmo succeeds admirably.

She establishes a compelling young hero, and places him in a world that is very realistic but always seems about to drift into the fantastical. That's the great romance of Wales. She then introduces the bones and the flavor of well known, but ancient, Welsh legends. The old tales aren't necessarily about logic or linear story telling in their original form; they're more about mood and mystery and ambiguity, and this is what Nimmo captures for the young reader. The books are more about "wonder" than "magic", and they have a depth of feeling that is often missing from more pedestrian efforts.

So, well worth a try for a reader who is ready for something a bit more literary and demanding, but still exciting and entertaining.

the snow spider is definately one of my favorite books of all time. when I was reading it, everyone was trying to get me to do something, ANYTHING besides read that book, but nothing anyone did could make me stop. after i read this book, I had to read "orchard of the cresant moon," and "the chesnut soldier." I often think of the snow spider now, and wish that i could be a magician like gwen, and do things like see pictures from a different world. Jenny Nimmo is extremely creative, and i know i will remember this book forever.

The perfect cookbook for folks who live alone.
By Hope Irvin Marston
I love to cook and I love new cookbooks. I read a review of this one in our local newspaper about a month ago and I knew I had to have it. From breakfast to desserts, I have found many recipes I want to try.

The book has multiple features that I like. Chief ones are that the recipes call for ingredients normally stocked by cooks who enjoy preparing meals; they can be whipped up in a hurry and microwaved in minutes; and they taste good.
Many of them are prepared and baked in a 16-oz mug. That’s the size of my two-cup Pyrex measuring cup.

To date I have made Quinoa Chile, Crumb Coffeecake, Kale and Barley Soup, Tomato- Couscous- Chickpea Soup, Salmon Chowder, Antipasto Pasta, and Bread Pudding and I’ve had this book less than a month.

I’ve enjoyed each of these dishes. I am recently widowed and this book is helping me to continue to eat wholesome food because it is so easy to “stir it up.”

Great book
By Erik Linna
My wife and I have already used this book more than any cookbook we have bought in the recent years (and we buy a lot). Recipes are all pantry friendly, especially great for lunches and breakfasts. So much cheaper and healthier and interesting than canned soups, frozen dinners and the like. We bought one each for our single son and daughter in college. They are both using and enjoying their copies a lot, too.

The few mug meals I have tried so far are pretty good. I like that it takes only a few minutes to prepare and cook.
The ingredients are things I have, I don't have to get special foods or spices, I like that it makes one serving and I don't have left overs.

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life, by Mark Manson

In this generation-defining self-help guide, a superstar blogger cuts through the crap to show us how to stop trying to be positive all the time so that we can truly become better, happier people.

For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Manson makes the argument, backed by both academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited - "not everybody can be extraordinary; there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault". Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek.

There are only so many things we can give a f*ck about, so we need to figure out which ones really matter, Manson makes clear. While money is nice, caring about what you do with your life is better, because true wealth is about experience. A much-needed grab-you-by-the-shoulders-and-look-you-in-the-eye moment of real talk, filled with entertaining stories and profane, ruthless humor, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is a refreshing slap for a generation to help them lead contented, grounded lives.

Choose Carefully What You Really Care About
By Bassocantor
Much of the writing in THE SUBTLE ART OF NOT GIVING is tongue-in-cheek. Surprisingly, however, there is a lot in this book that is SERIOUS. I know, I know, with a title like that, it's hard to believe, but it's true. Mark Manson actually makes quite a few substantive, helpful points.

Mark makes it clear that he's NOT saying you should not care about anything. Not at all. What he is saying is that you should pick carefully WHICH things you care about: "This book will help you think a little bit more clearly about what you’re choosing to find important in life and what you’re choosing to find unimportant." He's not suggesting we should be indifferent; rather, carefully deciding where to place our concern.

How you pick your top concerns has practical consequences. Mark gives a real-world example about a cranky person in the check-out line at the market. The elderly customer is making a big fuss about some minor thing. Why? Because they don't have anything else to occupy their time. If you don't have anything substantive to occupy your time, then it's trivial stuff that bothers you: "Your ex-boyfriend’s new Facebook picture, how quickly the batteries die in the TV remote, missing out on yet another two-for-one sale on hand sanitizer—chances are you don’t have much going on in your life..."

Mark suggests just picking a few big things--values and people that reflect your values: "What I’m talking about here is essentially learning how to focus and prioritize your thoughts effectively—how to pick and choose what matters to you and what does not matter to you based on finely honed personal values."

Much of life is about solving problems. They are inevitable, and we shouldn't pretend that we can make them go away. The author has no kind words for those embracing victimhood: "People deny and blame others for their problems for the simple reason that it’s easy and feels good, while solving problems is hard and often feels bad."

On a serious note, the author relates a horrific experience from his youth, when a drunken friend took a dare, jumped into a lake and drowned. "The most transformational moment of my life occurred when I was nineteen years old." This tragedy led to a determination to change the direction of his life, and figure out what is most important: "Oddly, it was someone else’s death that gave me permission to finally live. And perhaps the worst moment of my life was also the most transformational."

The last part of the book has a serious tone--quite different in tone than the first part of the book. This part of the book is more philosophical. The author refers often to a book, "The Denial of Death," (which became a Pulitzer Prize winner.) In serious, heartfelt chapters, the author reflects on human existence, and our search for meaning in life.

All in all, I found THE SUBTLE ART to be a fascinating read. The author writes well, and the book is easy to follow. Don't be fooled by the title, however, a lot of this book is very serious.

A surprisingly serious book - in a good way
By VH
There are a dozen of topics Mark goes through in this book. Some of the main themes are these:

(1) Choosing what to care about; focusing on the things/problems that are actually meaningful/important (= "giving a f*** about the right things")
(2) Learning to be fine with some negative things; always aiming for positivity isn't practical, and is stressful in itself
(3) Taking responsibility of your own life; it's good for your self-esteem not to keep blaming the circumstances for your problems
(4) Understanding the importance of honesty and boundaries, especially in relationships
(5) Identity; it might a good idea not to commit strongly to any special identity such as "an undiscovered genius", because then any challenges will make you fear the potential loss of that identity you've clinged to
(6) Motivation; how to improve it by accepting failure and taking action
(7) Death; how learning to be more comfortable with one's own mortality can make it easier to live

The first 20% of this book were a little bit boring to read, but after that, the experience was very absorbing. Just like Manson's previous book (Models), I will give this one five stars.

(BTW this book wasn't as humorous as I expected. It was much more a serious than a funny book to read. The final chapters, discussing the acceptance of death, made me actually a little bit tense and distressed.)

This book is scary
By George
This is one of the best books I have ever read. The information that is in the book is to scary and at the same way helpful. In the middle of reading this book I felt like, then what is the point on living? Why just don't die if we are going to do it anyways. I started to feel strange inside of me. I was scared because everything he writes about Is true. We all try to hard on impressing people. Try hard to make big goals and try to achieve them. But in the end we do it not for ourselfs we do it for the attention we will get in the result for that. We are not special, but in the same time we are. We are all unique bit not more special than the others. We live our life trying to be "successful" and convince ourself that it is because we want it for us. But in some cases we are not. We (and when I mean "we" I mean myself) try so much to achieve goals working hard everyday trying to come closer to that goal. But when I readed this book my eyes opened. I was wrong. I was not doing it for myself. I was doing it to prove others I am worth of their attention. Because I wanted to feel special because yeah. I always said to myself "nobody work hard enough for success so I am special I work harder than the others and that is why i deserve it more". I was every day working hard, I did not want to accept it but when I readed this book it really hurted me. I felt like he was 100% seeing through me. I felt like my life was pointless. All I did, the goals I was pursuing was only to make other think in the future. "Wow he is special. He worked hard to obtaining he's goals. He is inspiring". I wanted to show the people that made me feel bad about myself see me in the future and look up on me and say to themselves. "Well I think I am the real loser". But in this book I began to think. I was always looking at other people judging them about being at their 30-40 having a s***ty job, family, complaining about everyone and everything etc. Or the ones on my ages always working hard, making fools of themselves trying to get the attention of others. Or people screaming at others just to feel like they are better than the other person. I always felt sorry about them. When reading this book I realised I am exactly at them. We live our whole life trying to be somebody. When the real thing we should do is try to be the person we want to be. But it is not easy. The society always look up to successes and winners but never at the ones that are not that "successful" but are happy. And that make us all feel like we are not enough. Which we think is true. We give fu*ks about so many things that are not really important and that does not mean anything at all. The fact that we are going to die is terrifying. Not because we don't know what comes next, it's because, we thing yeah if we all will die then what is the point of trying? That's the reason this book is good it does not just make you unsure about all your beliefs. It also makes you realise that it does not mather at all if you are going to die. The real problem is what you should care about while you are alive. The old lady crossing the road in the pace of a turtle. Or the really fact that we are alive and are able to choose what we want to care about.

Why did i writte a so long post? Well because if this can help somebody in my situation it will be nice. And the other reason was for myself. Because even if I say I don't care I actually care about what others think about me, and even if you don't know me in person. Knowing someone readed this and got the inspiration to read the book then it's enough for me. To feel like I did something good.

And the third reason is because I liked the super hero "Disappointed Panda". He is cool and I would like a hero like that. Instead of the false super heroes that lies to others just to get liked by them.

So this is an executive book. It gives a new way to look at things. I really recomend it for the people that are tired of this world and the humans on it, and even worst that tries way to hard to imprese those humans you hate, because you were told that is the right way to fulfill yourself. "You should do like the rest",they said. It does not help in the long run. It have never and will never!
