Each book of the Bible has well-written summaries with good information. However

I purchased these books for our church because its the most recently revised version of the NABRV approved by the US Catholic Bishops, and the book is very inexpensive. However there was a drawback to the price. The font is very difficult to read by both middle/school students and older adults because it is so tiny. Each book of the Bible has well-written summaries with good information. However, for youth, and, adults too, I have recommended spending a little more money on youth Bibles such as the one by St Mary's Press. The font is larger and they include many more informative articles and commentaries scattered throghout the text which are very well written and highlight further text being read. They also have a few illustrations and additional references which most find helpful.

Current, Easy to Use and Read

This is the current version used by American Catholics. I have two now. The first is getting marked up from my Bible study group, so we bought one for the family. It has several helpful indices for finding what passage you are looking for. Plus, the notations on each page are currently relevant in explaining cultural phrase and dialect that sounds awkward. The notations also explain places and people, making the reading easier. Handy edition, I highly recommend it.

Great reference bible. Complete with all the books included.

This bible has the best reference material of any anywhere. The Council of Bishops spent 25 years working over the text and providing scholarly notes and reference and cross references. Only thing that makes it a little difficult to read is the notes are in parallel columns and you sometimes have to find the follow on text.

Great paperback for next to nothing in price.

Not sure what to call it...

The book is filled with interesting applications of R and data mining; however, I am unsure where to place it in my library. Each chapter is a brief summary of the process taken to solve a question with data, which is peppered with R syntax and figures. Given that each chapter is a case study, I found many decisions to be given in one-liner explanations. Thankfully, most of the contributing authors provide references for further exploration.

What I found to be the most limiting factor from enjoying the material was the preparation of the text and supplemental materials. For example, chapter 8 syntax does not include syntax on how to import the CSV file nor how to use some packages/functions as detailed in the chapter. Granted it may be assumed the reader should know this ahead of time, I feel for the sake of consistency that such information should still be provided. Consequently, the syntax feels more like a sketchbook rather than a step-by-step process on following the author towards a solution. I was hoping this book would be a great addition to my library and for others, but I cannot justify recommending this book as of now. I hope the authors of the book revisit the supplemental material and text to ensure consistency in the reading.

Not worth it !!!

I was expecting a great deal since it has real life applications with R source code for trying out the different algorithms. But I was deeply disappointed with the typesetting of the document - R commands are mixed up with their outputs, there is no consistency of the R code & output formatting, across the different chapters and worse, the source code in the accompanying web site for some of the chapters are either incomplete (for example Ch.13, fortify.R is missing) or existing files are not syntactically correct (Chapter 8). I have been spending the last few days on running the source code to reproduce the results given in the book but I have succeeded in running 2 chapters.

I am not sure how reputed publishers such as AP can compromise on quality & do a lousy job and the publisher would have been better of by suggesting the authors of the various chapters to use the R-package knitr and that would have brought out the formatting consistency automatically and avoided authors pasting source code into the text document processor & making avoidable mistakes !!!

Content-wise also, not all the applications are interesting. Chapters 6, 11, 12, 14 - all of them use random forest to analyse the data-sets. Not all the chapters are interesting for the reader who is specialising in specific domain. At least they could have chosen the case-studies & the data sets in a way that a wider set of algorithms are covered.

The contents(case-studies) are very good for people who are not so experienced in data mining field. I had hoped I could learn advanced data mining via step-by-step case analysis. But many R codes of the book cannot run and some dataset referenced in the R code cannot be found in the data set download. I hope the author revisit the supplemental material and R code to make them connsistent and provide updates via rdatamining.com.

Sets the Standard for ALL Watch Reference Books

Like most emerging watch enthusiast, I hesitated spending $$$$ on just a book. After all, why can't i just look online for the details and put that money towards some more sweet sweet wrist candy? Especially when this book is just about one watch? (Speedmaster)

Well let me tell you. You need to buy this book, because it will change the way you view other watch books. It will set the standard of what a good reference book SHOULD be. Let me give you some example:

This book not only goes through every single reference up to the early 2000's, but they also provide the accurate box, bracelets, and even what the correct PAPER WORK should look like for a specific reference. This book is so meticulous, that it's mindboggling how they even got this stuff categorized. It goes through every known bezel, caseback, and case variation. It lets you know which reference should have which variation of the 861 caliber. Did I mention everything has pictures? You get a visual of everything, often from multiple angles.

Get this book if you are at all serious about collecting watches. Because not only will it be a great tool if you're looking for a Speedy, it will also change your expectation of what a great reference book should be.

Great book,offers the most comprehensive information you can find anywhere

Got this last month,purchased my first vintage Speedy with it.And it all checks out.But I did see a lot of put-togethers with this book on the market.

Definitely buy it if you want to purchase a vintage cal.321 Speedmaster.I got it for around $300 and $300 for saving yourself from put-together watches time and time again is of course worth it.

It is worth noting that there is free info available online for free.And you might want to check out those first.But this does have a complete set of photos of most dials and with some arrows pointing to the place you can notice the difference.Some of which is rather small,but helpful if you want an all original part watch.Plus there is some original research done by the author and is very interesting and might came in handy.

The book also has photos and info of most manual winding Speedmasters,I believe it has all the old ones,including the one-offs.Some I didn't know existed.But no current models up to 2014.Which is a bit of a shame but those are available through Omega so no big deal.The photos are pleasing to look at as well.

I gave it a 4 stars instead of 5 because although the printing is of high quality done in Switzerland.The powder(?) left over by the printing process is still left in the book in great volume.It won't ruin your floor(it is thin and small) but you can feel it when you touch it and you might inhale it if you read the book in a no nicely ventilated room...It gave me head ache when I first read it...I now wear gas mask to read it..But I think reading it outside will do too.Don't do it in your bedroom unless you have an air cleaner or you have really big windows...I don't think those powder are good for you....

You cannot own a Speedy and not own this book. The level of detail they put in this book makes graduate texts look like Green Eggs and Ham.

About the Author

Jillian Venters was a fairly spooky and morbid child. When she discovered the existence of the whole Gothic sub-culture, she clapped her hands with glee and fell upon it like a babybat upon a box of Count Chocula cereal. Since then, the Lady of the Manners has spent a not inconsiderable amount of time trying to gently persuade others in her chosen subculture that being a polite Goth is much, much more subversive than just wearing T-shirts with "edgy" sayings on them. She lives in Seattle.

A charming guide to alternate aesthetics

Jillian Venters' Gothic Charm School website has for some time been offering advice, hints and tips on etiquette and lifestyle to her fellow Goths and those close to them. Always insightful, witty, and down-to-earth, she treats her correspondents with obvious respect and a healthy dose of affectionate humor.

The same respectful yet witty tone is liberally larded in this, her first volume distilling the essentials of the most common themes and topics in her advice columns. Though primarily aimed at the Dark and Spooky Crowd, most of what she presents here about dealing with a world that looks askance at those who are different will be taken to heart by anyone who is to either side of the mainstream, and her advice on manners is as applicable to snide cheerleaders as it is to gossipy Goths.

Pete Venters' droll, spot-on illustrations (in black and white, of course!) are a perfect accompaniment to the text and worth appreciating in their own right.

All in all, a very fine read, indeed.

Not JUST for the Goth Crowd.

While it may be aimed at Goths and those that love- or just want to understand- them, this book is a true show of why good manners are a good thing for EVERYONE. As a delighted reader of the GCS columns and a "Goth Friendly" person, I appreciate the humor and wonderful common sense (not so common anymore, really) advice Jillian has to offer. This book is a humorous and informative read!

Joanie, Joanie, Joanie. How many times must you fall prey to the opposite sex? How many times must I feel like violently shaking you and telling you to run in the opposite direction?

Ms. Collins weaves a fun, fast-paced name-dropping narrative that isn't afraid to pull punches or name names. A great read for any fan of classic Hollywood or just a well-wrought story about coming of age, life and love under the harsh spotlight of fame. She is a survivor and a true star.

I had the paperback years ago and it had a bunch of photographs in it. The Kindle edition does not seem to have them at all. It also seems to be edited, as I remember things from the paper-back that are no longer in the kindle edition.

Will He Still Love You Tomorrow?

"Perhaps the strongest reason for this book is this: I feel in some small way that I have been a pioneer in the cause of women's sexual equality, and also in overcoming the age barrier that sets a cruel double standard for so many women in every walk of life." Joan Collins wrote this autobiography at the height of her Dynasty fame in 1983. I read it then at the age of fourteen, thinking it so incredibly bohemian, glamorous, and adventurous. It still is, and well worth reading because of Collins' sparkling prose and storytelling skills. The real underlying theme of this book, however, are the conflicts she (and all women, really) face when dealing with men. Now at age 44 myself, and having also been around the sex n' love block and aging to boot, my perspective on Collins' idea of herself as a pioneer on sexual equality and ageism has changed. Like all young girls, she considered her mother weak, clueless, and "filled with a host of misconceptions and superstitions that she drummed into me at an early age...A lot of these adages I deliberately set out to disprove as soon as I became aware of the male sex. But, there is a lingering residue of her teachings bouncing around in the subconcious somewhere that agrees with a lot of her philosophies: 'Men are no good.' 'They only want ONE THING from a woman.' 'He'll have NO RESPECT for you if you let him HAVE HIS WAY with you.' 'Nice girls don't let men TOUCH THEM unless they are married.' And so on, and so on..." About her mother, Collins' declares that "I was always stronger than she and it irritated me that she seemed to adore being a slave to my father." To show how wrong her mother was, and how much stronger than her mother she is, Collins instead chose to be a slave to many men. First husband Maxwell Reed drugged, raped, and beat her. He tried to be her pimp, blackmailed her, and sued her for alimony. Lover Sydney Chaplin lazed around the house and let Collins support him. Lover Arthur Loew was a garden-variety selfish jerk. Married George Englund made her his mistress and played her like a fish. Warren Beatty was an unknown who latched on to her, and then proceeded to boss her around about her career. Second husband Tony Newley was indifferent and dismissive, cheating on her and creating an insulting character based on her called Polyester Poontang, for one of his works of "genius." Third husband Ron Kass starts taking drugs on the sly, letting her fund their lifestyle, and publicly humiliating her when news of bills he left unpaid were made public. Whereas her repressed mother was married to, and supported by, one man her whole life, Collins states that "throughout most of my adult life, through three marriages and all my relationships with men, I have always bought my own clothes, furs, most of my jewelry, and paid my own bills." It seems like these jerks were only too willing to let her do just that. So, have things changed all that much now that women are more "free?" Not from my experience or that of my girlfriends. Men will still take free milk, and leave the cow with the check if it makes her happy. As far as ageism, Collins indulges in a little bit of it herself when describing the dirty old men who lusted after her. To be fair, these were sleazeball casting-couch predators, but nevertheless, describing it from a young girl's viewpoint, the disgust came from the offers being from men old enough to be her father. She unwittingly tells the truth: overt middle-aged sexuality is deeply unsettling. The 40s and 50s are mother- and father-figure time, not sex-object time. Her early championship of MILF-dom helped create today's legion of cougars. Younger men don't fear them, as Collins did her horny old men. Instead, they'll just sleep with them and move on. The older woman will be disgusted with herself for finding herself hurt and made a fool of for love and sex-again. Pioneer? For what? With all due repect, Joan Collins didn't change a thing. Mummy was right on the money.

Confusion in Talladega

The book The Creeks of Talladega is an amateurish attempt to give bits and pieces of what the author knows about the Creek Indians in some areas of Alabama before Removal. THere is no logical sequencing of the material. Short articles about various incidents in Creek history are scattered about with no historical order or outline. Why the title of the book was chosen escapes this reader! Approximately six pages (out of 173 pages) were given to the Talladega area and little specific information concerning the Creek Indians in the area was given. Interested parties need not look to this material for any meaningful research on the Creeks in Alabama. Several historical mistakes are included (compare Menawa p. 51,49;a ficticious massacre at Burnt Corn Creek, p. 41; among others)

Not worth your time

I should have read the other review before ordering. A lot of the material is plagerized word for word from other sources and some of the "chapters" have whole paragraphs that are copied and pasted from previous "chapters". I place "chapters" in quotes because several are scarcly a page of text and most have nothing to do with the title of the "chapter".

All in all a poorly writen book that should have never been published. If you are looking for research material, look elsewhere.

Jeffrey Wainwright is a poet, translator, and critic. He taught for many years at Manchester Metropolitan University where he was Professor in the Department of English until 2008.

Not a good resource for one wanting to learn about poetry on their own.

The book is way too dense, with discussions that are rambling with no clear cut goal. It is very difficult to understand if, like me, you are an educated person who has never studied poetry, but would like to learn some basics. In the text sections, the author says to refer to the glossary for definitions; in the glossary, he says the definitions are of necessity short but are explained in the text (they are not), and then suggests you go buy, another reference book to get satisfactory definitions. So by his own admission, the book does not stand on its own. I'm paraphrasing now, but his goal was the demystification of poetry, he failed miserably.

And frustrating that the words in the glossary, poorly defined though they were, could not be accessed by simply clicking on the word and going directly to the glossary. Perhaps, Kindle books do not support this very basic feature, perhaps this is simple laziness on the part of the author, but it is really frustrating.

If you want to learn about poetry and you want to do it on your own, this is NOT the book for you.

I see this book as being very helpful.

I find this book very helpful. I am preparing for a poetry class over this summer, I bummed into this book at the Columbia Book store In NYC, and now I can't put it down. I didn't read other books that teach poetry, but thus far, I'm in the middle of reading chapter three, and I enjoy it very much.
