Big and Good

I went to a store and looked at all of the new Rand McNally Atlases, along with a few other brands. This one was the best, at least for me. As some have commented, it is really big. The upside is that there is a lot of detail and it is actually not that thick or heavy. The small ones did not have enough detail to make them worthwhile. The spiral ones seem like a good idea, but it is tough to match up different pages and it often seems like there are small gaps in the maps on different pages. With this one it is easier to follow a map from one page to the next. This is big and can be a bit awkward in a car, but it is one of the best atlases out there.

My kids call me an old fuddy-duddy. And they say this atlas proves it. I have one in my car, and another in my kitchen drawer (hey, you never know when you will want to know where something is). I bought this one for my 18 year old son to put in his car, since he will be leaving for college in a month. I'm a firm believer that if you're stuck in a traffic jam on I-80, it's good to have a real map to tell you how to get around it, instead of trying to rely on a GPS (not that helpful) or calling a brother, sister or parent for help. And if you're one of those who think the Zombie Apocalypse might be coming, then you know GPS won't work any more, and you'd better have an atlas to help you find your way down those zombie infested roads. ;-)

Indescribeably Great

I can't explain it, but sometimes nothing else will do but a hardcopy map. I love my MapQuest/Google Maps/etc., but I still rely on my Rand McNally road atlas for planning road trips. Maybe relative distances don't translate as well on a computer screen? Maybe it's more browseable? Maybe because these include scenic routes and give you an idea of the relative populations of the cities you're passing through or near? Maybe the feeling of luddite kinship with past generations of users? Whatever the reason, for the price of 1.5 magazines, this is a great read, and good insurance for when that apocalyptic event renders the computer and gps unavailable!

Gracias a Dios que alguien haya podido sacar dinero de un trayectoria fallecido del sacerdocio, como el Padre Albert Cutie. Le felicito, especialmente siendo yo seminarista anteriormente para el mismo Arquidiocesis de Miami en los anos ochenta. Su trayectoria testifica a la gran duplicidad de la Iglesia Catolica en cuanto a los asuntos sexuales, y especialmente en cuanto a la homosexualidad. Como dice Cutie en su libro -- un hecho que todo la gente que ha estado a dentro de la Iglesia sabe -- la organizacion esta llena de gente gay , y no pudiera funcionar sin homosexuales. Que gente tan triste e involucrada en an una sencilla perversion de la humanidad! Felicitaciones a Alberto Cutie por haber dicho la verdad. Ojala que la hipocracia termine!!

Mankell delivers a solid mystery with excellent buildup and dynamic characters, and Dick Hill's delivery keeps the tension taut through the story. Hill's gruff voice perfectly brings the downtrodden Wallander to life, but other characters' voices are sometimes unconvincing. Hill uses the same tone and pitch for all characters, rendering men and women confusingly interchangeable. The liberal use of audible sighs, snorts and chortles pull listeners deep into the narrative, and Hill should also be commended for his smooth reading of Swedish names and places. A body is found at an ATM the apparent victim of heart attack. Then two teenage girls are arrested for the brutal murder of a cab driver. The girls confess to the crime showing no remorse whatsoever. Two open and shut cases. At first these two incidents seem to have nothing in common, but as Wallander delves deeper into the mystery of why the girls murdered the cab driver he begins to unravel a plot much more involved complicated than he initially suspected. The two cases become one and lead to conspiracy that stretches to encompass a world larger than the borders of Sweden.

As good as Sjoewall & Wahloo, and that's saying something!

Maybe it's not a coincidence that the best police procedural series since the Martin Beck series also comes from a Swedish author. These deliberate, dark novels are not to everyone's taste, but if you liked Martin Beck, you'll probably like Kurt Wallander.
Firewall starts with two seemingly random events-- a reclusive computer expert drops dead in front of an ATM machine, and two teenage girls bludgeon and stab an elderly taxi driver to death. At first it seems that there couldn't possibly be any connection between the two, but the police investigation into the murder of the taxi driver is like kicking over an anthill. It seems as if a dozen incomprehensible things happen in rapid succession, including the killing of the prime suspect in the murder case. Inspector Kurt Wallander leads a dogged team of detectives in a search for the key to the baffling series of events, even though he has been accused of brutality toward a juvenile suspect and seems to be harboring a traitor among the cops on his team.
These cops work long hours, drink endless cups of coffee, and stop for numberless hamburgers and pizzas. But they also have home lives, do their laundry, take care of their sick kids, and struggle with car repairs and getting their errands done. Wallander, a divorced man in his mid-50's with diabetes and an advanced case of loneliness, balances action with thought, not all of it pleasant or useful. His resemblance is Martin Beck is strong, but this cop and his colleagues operate without the black humor that made Sjoewall and Wahloo's novels so fascinating. If society looked hopeless in the 1970's, it looks much worse in the late 1990's, and Wallander and his fellow cops see enough brutality and senseless violence to make anyone a pessimist.
The best thing is, however, that the story really works. After pages of relentless police work, including much attention to the efforts of a young hacker coopted to help the police break into a seemingly impregnable computer, the pieces start falling into place. The pace quickens, and the police keep getting closer, but
Wallander continues to make mistakes, not knowing how complicated the plot he is investigating really is. One realistic touch is that the book doesn't end with the climax, when the puzzle finally finds it solution. Instead, it meanders on for a bit to let the reader see the let-down at the end and the chance for Wallander to re-focus on his own life and priorities. The traitor on his team is still there. The mistrust of his superiors has not abated. But Wallander decides to continue to do his job because he hasn't any other option. It doesn't get much more real than that.

A thriller with psychological depth

What a relief it is to read a modern thriller/police procedural whose characters seem real. Mankell's protagonist, Swedish police officer Kurt Wallander, is not a super-hero who outwits and outfights legions of bad guys. Nor is he as phenomenally lucky as the heros in many American thrillers. Wallander, a dedicated cop, has a believable internal life. His real-world personal problems include loneliness, distance from his adult daughter, and a threat to his position from an ambitious younger officer. His horrendously long hours make him feel exhausted; he gets frustrated with baffling evidence and failed plans. Yet he persists in trying to understand the connections between the deaths he is investigating. Different pieces of the puzzle appear at well-paced intervals during the story. There are surprises that don't fit theories. The conspiracy that emerges turns out to reach far beyond local events. Though the chief villain gets nailed at the end of the book, Mankell does not wrap things up in a neat package. The threat is still out there.
Subsidiary themes of the book include the vulnerability of our technological society, and resentment of the growing concentration of wealth. There are a few problems. Many of the Swedish names sound alike, making it difficult to separate some policemen and policewomen from others. Mankell's writing, translated from Swedish, sometimes produces short, choppy sentences. There is a peculiar fixation on checking the time. Nonetheless, this book rises far above most mysteries.

A Problem of Scale

Henning Mankell is one the finest mystery writers in the world. He understands plotting, the building of tension and the pacing of a story. In terms of craft, he is right up there with P.D. James. Mankell's talent as an author explains why a series of books about a gloomy, middle aged detective from a small town in Sweden has developed an international following.

The one problem with such a strong writing talent is that it sometimes allows an author to camoflouge a weak and unbelievable plot line. Kurt Wallander is a detective in small town Sweden and yet he stumbles onto a conspiracy with world wide implications. The scale of this conspiracy is far too great for Wallander's provincial world. For this novel to work, it requires more than virtuoso writing. The scale of the crime must fit in the scale of the hero's world. This is a very well written crime novel but in the end, I found it unbelievable.

General John H. Morgan, died in Greeneville, TN

I live in Greeneville, Tn and enjoy learning more about the civil war. General Morgan visited Greeneville often during the war and enjoyed staying at one of the nicest homes in the area known as the Williams/Dixon mansion which today has been restored to resemble the original splendor of the days when Gen. Morgan visited. Unfortunatley, Greeneville is also the town were General Morgan was killed by Federal troops that had surrounded the town after learning from an informant that Morgan was visiting. This book is much more interesting than I thought it would be. I purchased the book in Sacramento, CA on a sale rack. I lived in Greeneville in the early 80's and didn't think I would ever live here again, but I had a chance to move back about 2 yrs. ago so I am just now reading the book. This book is a good blend of technical details and human interest stories and features many short poems and songs written by the men that were under General Morgan's leadership. I highly recommend this book to all Civil War enthusiats but I feel it would be interesting reading to others as well. People involved with horses would also find this book interesting.

Brown's narrative account of John Hunt Morgan's cavalry exploits during the Civil War is thorough and entertaining, with many interesting details of the individuals involved. Unfortunately, it is also flawed by a heavy Southern bias and lack of perspective, so read with a grain of salt. Brown gives the impression that Kentucky was heavily pro-Southern, and fails to explain that that it remained in the Union because Confederate general Polk was the first to breach its short-lived "neutrality." He also fails to explain that Bragg decided to retreat from his 1862 invasion of Kentucky largely because the male population did not rally to join him in rebellion, as expected. Perhaps his biggest lapse was his description of Antietum as "Lee's glorious victory over McLellan." I was also disappointed by the lack of a balanced analysis of Morgan's effectiveness as a cavalry raider, and the lack of comparison with contemporaries such as Nathan Bedford Forrest and Union counterpart Frank Wolford. Morgan becomes "legendary" after the first small skirmishes, and remains a perfect hero throughout, despite many opinons to the contrary, such as Bragg, Jefferson Davis, and most of the senior command! Even his disasterous raid into Indiana and Ohio is treated as a great victory.

About the Author

Timothy J. Rupert

Timothy J. Rupert is a Professor and the Golemme Administrative Chair at the D’Amore-McKim School of Business at Northeastern University. He received his B.S. in Accounting and his Master of Taxation from the University of Akron. He also earned his Ph.D. from Penn State University. Professor Rupert’s research has been published in such journals as The Accounting Review, The Journal of the American Taxation Association, Behavioral Research in Accounting, Advances in Taxation, Applied Cognitive Psychology, Advances in Accounting Education, and Journal of Accounting Education.

He currently is the co-editor of Advances in Accounting Education. In 2010, he received the Outstanding Educator Award from the Massachusetts Society of CPAs. He also has received the University’s Excellence in Teaching Award and the D’Amore-McKim School’s Best Teacher of the Year award multiple times. He is active in the American Accounting Association and the American Taxation Association (ATA) and has served as president, vice president, and secretary of the ATA.

Thomas R. Pope

Thomas R. Pope is the Ernst & Young Professor of Accounting at the University of Kentucky. He received a B.S. from the University of Louisville and an M.S. and D.B.A. in business administration from the University of Kentucky. He teaches international taxation, partnership and S corporation taxation, tax research and policy, and introductory taxation and has won outstanding teaching awards at the University, College, and School of Accountancy levels. He has published articles in The Accounting Review, the Tax Adviser, Taxes, Tax Notes, and a number of other journals. Professor Pope’s extensive professional experience includes eight years with Big Four accounting firms. Five of those years were with Ernst & Whinney (now part of Ernst & Young), including two years with their National Tax Department in Washington, D.C. He subsequently held the position of Senior Manager in charge of the Tax Department in Lexington, Kentucky. Professor Pope also has been a leader and speaker at professional tax conferences all over the United States and is active as a tax consultant.

Kenneth E. Anderson

Kenneth E. Anderson is the Pugh CPAs Professor of Accounting at the University of Tennessee. He earned a B.B.A. from the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee and subsequently attained the level of tax manager with Arthur Young (now part of Ernst & Young). He then earned a Ph.D. from Indiana University. He teaches corporate taxation, partnership taxation, and tax strategy. Professor Anderson also is the Director of the Master of Accountancy Program. He has published articles in The Accounting Review, The Journal of the American Taxation Association, Advances in Taxation, the Journal of Accountancy, the Journal of Financial Service Professionals, and a number of other journals.

No E-code included with "New" purchase.

Pretty unhappy with the product. I bought it for $280 for a NEW copy and it came without the attached code. The product was not listed as new without code it was just listed as new so it should have had the accompanied code that now has cost me $80 for my it lab.

This is a terrible text book

This is a terrible text book. Our professor even complains about how bad the book is. However it's one of the few that can be purchased in Canada. Complicated items are not explained in a simple manner showing that the authors have a lack of understanding or lack of connection with users. It is boring, adds very little value, and riddled with errors. If your goal is to learn more about tax and you don't need this book for a class then it would be better just to go to the IRS website and read the tax code or use google searches rather than buy this book. This book appears to exist for the sole purpose of Pearson offering a US tax book and so that a university class technically has a text book associated with it.

About the Author
Lena Mukhina was a sixteen-year-old schoolgirl when the German army invaded the USSR in 1941 and besieged her home city of Leningrad. She survived the siege and returned to Leningrad after the war. She died in 1991.

Like Anne Frank, Lena Mukhina has written herself into immortality

On the front of this book, four women are seen pulling a sledge, laden with what appears to be two cadavers. The ground is frozen, possibly re-frozen after a partial thaw, suggesting the photograph was taken in late March 1942, around the 200th day of the Nazi blockade of Leningrad. Just less than 100,000 people died in Leningrad that month, most from starvation. In each of the two previous months the number exceeded 100,000.

By chance, 15-year-old Lena Mukhina began her almost daily report on her life in Leningrad on 22nd May 1941. She was a very normal teenager. Her primary concerns were the end-of-year examinations at school and social relationships with her fellow pupils. She had a number of girlfriends, was on good terms with several boys, and considered herself in love with a boy named Vova. Vova was always polite, but unfortunately showed no real interest in Lena. Lena, of course, hoped to change that.

She writes interestingly, and is particularly good at dialogue. Some of the early pages of her diary could be transferred directly to a film or TV script.

Then, on 22nd June, Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa. Lena's diary entries include news of the invasion as it was conveyed to the Soviet population through Sovinformburo, and as it impacted herself, her circle of school friends and their city.

She was co-opted to help with trench-digging within the city limits and then, in mid-July, she and `Mama Lena' (Lena's late mother's sister) were conscripted for three days of trench digging 21 miles south of Leningrad. The logistics of 12 hours of overnight digging, with a ten minute break every hour, are carefully described. 'We learned that there wasn't any food but there would be soon.'

Air raids began in early July; food rationing quickly followed. On 8th September Lena wrote, 'there were nine air raids ... If we have nine air raids a day for ten days in a row, then I believe there will be considerably more lunatics than sane people left in the city.'

Gradually, shortage of food became a far greater concern than either air raids or artillery fire. In November, the bread ration for white collar workers, adult dependents and children under 12 was reduced to 125 grams a day (4.4 ounces).

For the most part, Lena remains remarkably optimistic and cheerful. For as long as they had the energy, Lena and Mama Lena chased around and queued as necessary to buy the little amounts of food to which they were entitled. They each brought home small quantities of food they were given at lunchtime at work and school and made soup of it with plenty of hot water. After eating two bowls of this soup, Lena would go to bed 'feeling full'.

The bread ration was eased a little on December 25th, and there was a further increase in late January. But it was still too little and the January increase came too late to save Mama Lena. After some days of becoming increasingly lethargic and incapable, she died on February 7th, leaving Lena alone in the besieged city. Lena sent a telegram to her nearest relatives, 700 miles away, asking for 'advice', but, most unfortunately, sent it to an old address. It was late April before she finally received the response 'come'.

But how to get out of Leningrad? And how to survive until that became possible? Lena details almost daily her further adventures and the many frustrations of securing a place on an evacuation train. Even when that is arranged, there are further delays.

By late May, Lena is recording definite signs that she is herself succumbing to starvation. Then the diary abruptly ends, exactly 368 days after it began.

If we had no other information, we would fear that Lena had become moribund and, after a few more days, died. But the editors of this excellent volume have managed to establish that Lena did finally leave Leningrad in early June and that she ultimately lived to be 66, in her later years working in Moscow as a commercial artist.

For some readers of this book, the day-by-day account of the very small amounts of food acquired and consumed may become tedious. Others, especially of Lena's own age, will deeply empathize with her, and strongly will her to remain optimistic and active - and survive. For anyone with an interest in Soviet Russia and the Leningrad Siege, there is a huge amount to be learnt from Lena's diary, and it will implant an indelible impression of that awful Leningrad winter. This text is an important find. Without having any idea that she was doing so, Lena Mukhina has written herself into immortality.

About the Author
Kris Butler is wise to the ways of dogs and the families in which they live. She has participated in hands-on training with over 2500 dogs at her boarding school in Norman, Oklahoma. As a result, she understands of the complicated relationships between people and the dogs they love. In 2004 she introduced a new perspective to therapy dog handlers in the first edition of Therapy Dogs Today. Since then Therapy Dogs Today has been used as a training resource by organized groups of therapy dog handlers, instructors, and college programs across the country. As an adjunct faculty member at the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work, Butler helped develop and teach an online Animals and Human Health certificate program. She has also developed animal-enhanced (human)rehabilitation programs at two Oklahoma City hospitals as well as animal enhanced experiential programs for children and teens in public schools. Her Reaching People Through Dogs seminars have been delivered throughout the United States. In addition to training family dogs, Kris currently competes in agility and rally, and she coaches people who enjoy sporting events with their dogs. One agility student is also her husband, Dennis, who won an AKC National Agility Championship in 2013 with their Labrador retriever, Henry. Her professional vision remains focused on working with dogs to improve the quality of life for people and dogs as they live, play, and work together.

Excellent update

I read the earlier edition knowing I wanted to re-read it. Along came the second edition, so I read it instead. Excellent update. A few more illustrations help to focus on chapter content, i.e. structural diversity, handler evaluation, proxemics graphic, and balance scale. Author Butler appreciates the dog's perspective and innate "dogness" which enter into the balance with handler and environment. Evaluations should be related to a particular dog in a particular setting. Butler appreciates host settings which must support dog therapy via administration, policies, and staff time. There are no unusual settings for dog visits. Butler appreciates the extensive effort handlers put into preparing for, engaging in, and analyzing any one visit. The ongoing experience of handling a therapy dog is more about "becoming" than it is about "winning". Now I will re-read the second edition.

A must read for every Therapy Team!

I love this book! I'm the director of Animal Assisted Interventions for a local nonprofit and I would like to put this book in the hands of every new team we register! So many thoughtful ideas are presented, yet it is a short and easy read. One of the best books in my library on this topic.

Clear indicators for what to look for in selecting a dog to work as a therapy dog. Good ideas for handlers in choosing therapy sites that will work well for the dog's personality and the handler's abilities. For more experienced therapy teams, more insights into advocating for your therapy dog.

A straight to the point, research and experienced based, this is a must-read for all dog therapy team handlers.
