All martial arts change with three inches of steel.

Dan Inosanto has been one of the best teachers and proponents of the martial arts.His resume need not be repeated.In this book he explains and teaches the fighting system of his homeland.Unless a system realistically addresses weapons, sadly few do, it cannot call itself a complete martial art.For non ballistic( firearms) weapons, Kali has stood the test of time.Amongst my most prized books is a signed copy I received from Dan Inosanto attained at a seminar.His teaching ability is legendary and at your fingertips with this book or anything he does.

The text itself is martial arts history

If you have read Bruce Lee's "Tao of Jeet Kune Do" and respect his philosophy, you will love this book from his foremost student, GM Dan Inosanto.

Though there are many with higher credentials than myself, my sons and I have trained in Bandalan Doce Pares Eskrima under Master Antonio Lucero for over five years,so my experience of reading this book was perhaps very different from that of someone untrained in Eskrima/Kali/Arnis. Our grandmaster goes back with GM Inosanto, so perhaps it is not so suprising that I loved this book. It has much in the way of philosophy, history, and the structure of armed and unarmed techniques in this book that is invaluable. The stories of true Grandmasters, warrior legends, and veterans of dozens of fights to the death like Angel Cabales, Regino Ellustrisimo,Leo Giron, John Lacoste, and Floro Villabrille are amazing, as it is the tried and proven combat reality of FMA that makes it a unique and beautiful art.

There are many parts of the book that I enjoyed, but I found these passages under the heading of "Weapon Characteristics" to be a very important summation of why Kali/Eskrima/Arnis is such an important and deadly martial art.

"Escrimadors claim the ability to pick up any hand-wielded weapon, regarless of its shape, and use it effectively. To someone unfamiliar with Escrima principles, that sounds presumptuous, but consider the pattern of angles [covered earlier in the book and similar in all Escrima styles] again. There's only so many ways to hit an opponent.

If you're already familiar with one or more weapons, all the better. Swing the weapon, jab the weapon, hit anything with the weapon and see if you don't use some form of that pattern. The angles....of Escrima and Kali are 'principles. They have nothing to do with styles or faction.'

Instead of thinking of a weapon as belonging to the Chinese or the Japanese or the Filipinos or any particular martial art, instead of thinking of a weapon by its exotic name, look at the weapon, look at the weapon. The performance of a weapon is affected by its characteristics, not by its origin or its name." (128)

There are also many photographs and captions illustrating the efficacy of empty hand Eskrima/Kali and the way in which there is a unity between weapons-based and empty hand combat styles. The ideas on solo training and environmental training are very good as well (fighting in a doorway to defend your home, from behind a wall, etc.).

Loved this book growing up!

This book shows the old grandmasters of escrima at the time, 1970s-80s. It is a prime introductory guide to show the non-informed martial arts enthusiasts/students/fans the history of the eskrimadors. Many of the Stockton GMs are shown and they explain their art and share some stories of their past. I loved this book and really hope that amazon can acquire the Kindle digital version asap. There were times growing up and reading the pages of this great book over and over again.

This book is great for people who are interested in improving their business decision making. It starts with the absolute basics--the time value of money, and builds upon that to develop models for bond valuation, interest rate forwards and swaps, futures, repurchases (repos), on up to foreign exchange and options pricing models.

This book was exactly what I needed for this class. It's interesting to read and has all the important words highlighted or bolded, which is nice. Its a different cover than the one I would've gotten from school but all the material inside is the same! I think my friend has a "custom" version but my teacher said it was fine if we didn't have that. Very good for the price!

Die Böden des mediterranen Raumes unterliegen schon seit Jahrhunderten starker Erosion, einerseits aufgrund der diese begünstigende Landesnatur mit ihren klimatischen und petrographischen Voraussetzungen, andererseits aber auch als Folge menschlichen Siedelns und Wirtschaftens, wobei ein sich ständig verstärkender Druck auf den Landschaftshaushalt durch Überweidung, Ackerumbruch oder Versiegelung dessen Potentiale an seine Grenzen drängte (vgl. BLAIKIE u. BROOKFIELD 1987, S.122ff). Sind solche Grenzen einmal durchbrochen, ergeben sich vielfältige Folgeprobleme, deren Rückführungen meist erheblich schwierig, bzw. irreversibel sind. So wäre z.B. Überweidung mit der daraus resultierenden Degradation der Pflanzendecke durch Einhegung rückgängig zu machen, ein flächenhafter Abtrag eines durch Viehfraß entblößten Hanges kann jedoch nur schwerlich wieder mit dem erodierten Substrat wiederbedeckt werden. Inwieweit die Anteile jener Faktoren in der Vergangenheit und gegenwärtig gewichtet waren, bzw. sind und welcher Tendenz sie in Zukunft folgen werden, wird als Kernthematik dieser Hausarbeit zu klären versucht. Hierbei soll vor allem das Phänomen der Desertifikation erörtert werden, welches sich zwar ursprünglich nur auf Randwüstenregionen bezog, sich jedoch später auch auf den
mediterranen Raum übertrug. Dem folgt zunächst eine Darstellung jüngerer multinationaler Projekte, die sich um eine Verbesserung bzw. Vermeidung der Erosionsphänomene bemühen. Dabei sind besonders querschnittsorientierte Projekte hervorzuheben, welche auf möglichst umfassende Verbesserungen auf allen Ebenen, sei es auf der ökologischen, ökonomischen, sozialen oder politischen abzielen. Die daraus resultierenden Erfolge zeigen einen gangbaren Weg in die Zukunft auf. Das sich in der Praxis selbstverständlich Schwierigkeiten ergeben, insbesondere im Zuge integrativen, komplexen Managements, welches auf schnelle, umfassende Akzeptanz und Umsetzungsbereitschaft weiter Bevölkerungsteile angewiesen ist, soll jedoch nicht verschwiegen werden. Zum Schluss versucht ein kurzer Ausblick Möglichkeiten und Grenzen aufzuzeigen, die langfristig einen gangbaren Weg hin zu einem wirksamen Bodenschutz weisen könnten.

About the Author
Nick Lomb was Curator of Astronomy at the Sydney Observatory for over thirty years (1979-2010). He continues to work as a consultant astronomer for the Sydney Powerhouse Museum and Sydney Observatory. He is the author of the Australian Sky Guide, published annually by the Powerhouse Museum, as well several books on astronomy including Astronomy for the Southern Sky (1986) and the catalogue produced for the Powerhouse Museum’s exhibition on the 2004 transit of Venus, Transitof Venus: The Scientific Event that Led Captain Cook to Australia (2004).

A Great Reference Tool

This book can easily be called "Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Transits of Venus." The author, Nick Lomb, did a fantastic job of documenting Venus transits throughout history and he provides a plethora of facts, photos, artistic renderings, and tidbits that keep you turning the pages and wanting to read more. It is obvious to me that he loves the subjects he writes about. You should also know that on June 5/6 of this year there will be another Venus Transit. This one is extremely important because it will be the last Venus transit to occur during our lifetime! If you miss this one, you will not have another chance. The next Venus transit across the face of the sun occurs in 2117, over 100 years from now! Buy this book for reference and be ready to truly enjoy a once in a lifetime celestial event.

This book was written as a preparation for the last transit of Venus to be visible from Earth during the twenty first century and it took place on 6th June, 2012 (the reviewer's birthday). Australia was one place on earth where the full transit was visible, which may account for the great public interest that was aroused here. One does not have to be an astronomer to have found this a historically significant and fascinating event. This book tells the story of people from many nations who have tried to observe the transit of Venus, some successfully and some unsuccessfully. The format of the book is almost square with sides of about 23 centimetres. The illustration is prolific with both black and white and colour photographs and sketches. The large size format allows plenty of room for this purpose and many of the photographs used are important historically. The book has 227 pages that include an index, a glossary and a bibliography. The front cover shows a dramatic picture of the transit of Venus with the relative size of Venus being greatly exaggerated compared to the sun. There are two sets of text; firstly there is a continuous story in a larger font and this is interrupted by the many photos and the text explaining these photos in a smaller font. The net result is to lose continuity, though it is a difficult problem to solve.

The first transit of Venus was observed by Jeremiah Horrocks in England on 6th December 1639 and he wrote an account of his observations. He had advised his friend, William Crabtree of the event and they were the first men to observe a transit of Venus as far as is known. Each successive transit was observed until the present day and Lomb describes the attempts to observe it. He produces a very interesting story of human, patience, endurance and courage. Even though few human beings alive today are likely to see the next transit in 2117, the book is well worth reading from cover as it is full of fascinating information. The book is thoroughly recommended.

A fascinating story

This book tells a fascinating tale of Venus transiting, or moving across the face of, the sun, from 1631 when this event was first predicted to the then-imminent June 2012 transit. The transits became predictable in 17th Century, when scientists began to understand orbital mechanics. Observance of the transit was determined to be be a method for determining the true distance of Earth from the sun but transits only occur in pairs at about 120-year intervals. The effort to capture data during the 18th and 19th Century events make for fascinating reading, involving hardship, adventure and ingenuity. This book has LOTS of excellent photos of the instruments used and the people involved as well as some good maps. Well worth getting!
