The Best Book on Online Marketing for Small Business Owners!

Online Marketing: A User's Manual by Murray Newlands is an outstanding book on online marketing. This book tells you what you need to know, how to do it, and what the future holds in online marketing.

Newlands book is 230 pages long and includes 10 chapters. The chapters talk about all of these topics: Social Media, digital branding, websites, blogging, online PR and blogger outreach, video marketing, SEO, e-mail marketing, affiliate marketing, and digital advertising.

The whole book rocks! Murray even has an entertaining Foreword by Chris Brogan.

This is the "how-to" of online marketing and Newlands gives you all the information you need to succeed in pursuing this type of career.

Chapter 6 is on Video Marketing and where I learned the most about a topic I knew very little of. Murray's book tells you exactly how video marketing works, why it's important and how to do it. This is my favorite part of the book, and the most useful for small business owners that want to learn on how to do video marketing.

In Chapter 8 on E-mail Marketing, Murray gives you the blueprint of an e-mail marketing campaign, how to get it to work, use it, track it, how other companies use it, advanced uses, what the future holds in this untapped market, and the tools and resources to make it happen. This chapter alone was worth the price of the book!

I have read numerous books on online marketing, and this manual is my top 5 list. Reviewed on IntelJim dot com.

Absolutely loved this book. A great one to have on the shelf and to refer to when doing any online marketing!

I turned to this book because I know a lot about online marketing but I needed to regroup and organise my thoughts about the online marketing strategies I'm using on my site. Not only do I feel more than ready to write a new online marketing strategy for my company, this book has inspired me to be more creative and try new things in the online marketing sphere.

A well planned, organised, to the point book, that gives you exactly what you need to get you started or help you develop you online marketing plan.

Good gift for online beginners

I've recommended this book to my clients more than once. I teach social media and content strategy workshops and afterward people frequently come up to me and ask for a book they can work out of to get their online marketing going. It's ideal because it walks through the basics from a variety of angles.

The best part is that Murray tells you how the pieces fit together. For example, he has chapters on SEO, blogging, and online PR, and he not only covers the background on how to do each of them but also how they influence and relate to each other. Even more, he draws connections between new topics like social media and video marketing to older but still relevant approaches like affiliate marketing and email outreach.

If your friend is asking where to start with online marketing, send them this book. If your friend is transitioning from offline to online marketing, send them this book. And if that friend is you, I recommend it.

Improving your game

You can pick up some good tips on how to beat your opponents from two-time National Scrabble Champion Joe Edley along with some challenging puzzles in this modest Scrabble puzzle book. I particularly recommend the material on pages 194-202 where Edley suggests that you develop the habit of asking yourself questions before making a play.

For example, question number one is, "Do I have a bingo?" (A good first question!) Question number two is the obvious, Which bonus squares are available, but question number three really gets to the nitty-gritty of good play: "Can you 'hook' any words? Look at every word already on the board and ask yourself if any single letter can be added to the front or back to form another word." Also important is question number four: "What will my 'leave' be after I've made my play?"

Too often the beginning player does not pay enough attention to the tiles he or she is going to be stuck with after a play. Sometimes, Edley advises, it is better to make a lower-scoring play in order to leave oneself with tiles likely (with a little help) to form a bingo.

The bulk of the book is devoted to Scrabble puzzles on various themes, e.g., "Placing your letters on hot spots"; using the J, Q, X and Z; two-, three-, four- and five-tile plays, etc. There is a diagram of the Scrabble grid with some plays already made. Underneath the diagram are the letters in several different racks. You are asked to find the best play. Edley recommends that you do the puzzles by setting them up on your own Scrabble board. I think that is the best way as well since the diagrams in the book are in black and white and so the bonus squares are not colored, and are highlighted only by the letters "DWS," "DLS" ("Double Word Score," "Double Letter Score"), etc. This makes it hard to get a quick feel for where to look. At least that was my experience.

A handy feature is the list of the 97 two-letter words allowed in official Scrabble tournaments on page 7. (I think that has been changed to 96 with "da" now being disallowed.) Interesting features include the weighed scores for answers to the various puzzles. For example, for the puzzle on page 93 there is an "expert" score (for five racks) of 155, a "good" score of 145, and an "average" score of 120. But Edley also gives his score of 164 and challenges you to beat it.

There are 800 puzzles, so this book will last through many a long winter's night; however this is not as good a book as the more substantial Everything Scrabble (revised 2001) by Edley (along with John D. Williams, Jr.), which I also recommend for the serious Scrabble player.

This book is excellent as it contains many ways to improve and versify your Scrabble skills. There are many new games and approaches, which can range from novice to challenging. It contains many new words and methods of setting up the board during play, and if one really examines the games, one will certainly improve their Scrabble skills. As well, there are many games provided that will take hours to decipher and play.

Grade 1-5–In 1968, the movie Yellow Submarine broke new ground by combining popular songs with clever animation to tell a surrealistic story. This book combines an adaptation of the screenplay with artwork from the film. When Pepperland is threatened by the Blue Meanies and its inhabitants are turned into colorless statues, Captain Fred climbs into a yellow submarine and sets off to get help. After landing in Liverpool, he returns with the Beatles and together they journey underwater through the Sea of Monsters, are sucked into an inside-outside world, and survive the Sea of Holes. Eventually, they return to Pepperland to discover that the Fab Four fit into the uniforms of Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. When they begin to sing, everything returns to normal and even the Blue Meanies are transformed into kinder, gentler beings. Trying to translate the ebullience of the movie into a book is a daunting challenge, one that doesn't quite succeed. The text has some of the wonderful puns from the movie, but somehow they fall flat here. Some references might be over the heads of many youngsters. The illustrations combine slightly blurry film cels with pop-art cartoons of the main characters. The color palette is off with some of the yellows turned greenish. Neither the words nor the music of the title song are included. Great for the Kids

My two kids are huge Yellow Submarine fans, so this book was a natural fit. The artwork is taken directly from the film, with some slight modifications. The storyline, however, leaves out all of the songs - which in my opinion undercuts some of the story's charm. Gone too are many of the illustrations which accompanied the songs. As a result, you really only get a partial visual retelling.

As a historical comment, since the Beatles has very little to do with the actual movie other than licensing their songs and performing in an awkward two minute appearance in the end of the film, the absence of their music in a book on the subject is both unfortunate and fitting. The absence of much of the film's breathtaking artwork, on the other hand, is inexcusable.

That being said, the actual writing is quite clever. The text does its best to weave in Beatle's song titles into the prose - I suppose as a way of giving some sort of nod to the music which inspired the movie.

The reason I gave it 4 stars is that, despite my nitpickiness, my kids love the book. And if they like it, I'm a happy dad.

I'd suggest watching the movie first if you want to get the full "Yellow Submarine" experience.

However, this book is the perfect gift for any Yellow Submarine fan. It's the perfect thing to bring up those fond memories of the movie. :)

Aur�lien G�ron is a Machine Learning consultant. A former Googler, he led the YouTube video classification team from 2013 to 2016. He was also a founder and CTO of Wifirst from 2002 to 2012, a leading Wireless ISP in France, and a founder and CTO of Polyconseil in 2001, the firm that now manages the electric car sharing service Autolib'.Before this he worked as an engineer in a variety of domains: finance (JP Morgan and Soci�t� G�n�rale), defense (Canada's DOD), and healthcare (blood transfusion). He published a few technical books (on C++, WiFi, and Internet architectures), and was a Computer Science lecturer in a French engineering school.A few fun facts: he taught his 3 children to count in binary with their fingers (up to 1023), he studied microbiology and evolutionary genetics before going into software engineering, and his parachute didn't open on the 2nd jump.
