In light of recent tragedies and widespread protests across the nation, The Progressive magazine republished one of its most famous pieces: James Baldwin’s 1962 “Letter to My Nephew,” which was later published in his landmark book, The Fire Next Time. Addressing his fifteen-year-old namesake on the one hundredth anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, Baldwin wrote: “You know and I know, that the country is celebrating one hundred years of freedom one hundred years too soon.”

Award-winning author Jesmyn Ward knows that Baldwin’s words ring as true as ever today. In response, she has gathered short essays, memoir, and a few essential poems to engage the question of race in the United States. And she has turned to some of her generation’s most original thinkers and writers to give voice to their concerns.

The Fire This Time is divided into three parts that shine a light on the darkest corners of our history, wrestle with our current predicament, and envision a better future. Of the eighteen pieces, ten were written specifically for this volume.

In the fifty-odd years since Baldwin’s essay was published, entire generations have dared everything and made significant progress. But the idea that we are living in the post-Civil Rights era, that we are a “post-racial” society is an inaccurate and harmful reflection of a truth the country must confront. Baldwin’s “fire next time” is now upon us, and it needs to be talked about.

About the Author
Jesmyn Ward grew up in DeLisle, Mississippi. She received her BA and MA from Stanford University and her MFA from the University of Michigan where she received five Hopwood Awards. She was a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University and the John and Ren�e Grisham Writer in Residence at the University of Mississippi. Her first novel, Where the Line Bleeds, was a finalist for the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award and the Hurston-Wright Legacy Award. Her second novel, Salvage the Bones, won the 2011 National Book Award and the Alex Award and was a finalist for the Indies Choice Fiction Honor Award, the NYPL Young Lions Literary Award, the Hurston-Wright Legacy Award, and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. Her memoir, Men We Reaped, won the Media for a Just Society Award and the Heartland Award, and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Indies Choice Nonfiction Honor Award, and the Hurston-Wright Legacy Award. The American Academy of Arts and Letters selected Ward for the 2016 Strauss Living Award, a prize given every five years to enable authors to take time off from teaching and focus exclusively on writing. Ward is currently at work on her third novel and is an associate professor of creative writing at Tulane University. She lives in Mississippi.

Contributors include editor Jesmyn Ward (also a National Book Award-winner), former U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey, and novelist Edwidge Danticat. THE FIRE THIS TIME, inspired by James Baldwin’s THE FIRE NEXT TIME, aims to be a “book that would reckon with the fire of despair and rage and fierce, protective love currently sweeping through the streets and campuses of America. A book that would gather new voices in one place … to dissent, to call to account, to witness, to reckon.” This work succeeds in all these things that it sets out to do, and more. The title of this choric collection of prismatic prose and poetry convoking for equality, compassion and freedom from fear, written by some of today's prominent and talented African-American writers, derives from the title of James Baldwin's groundbreaking The Fire Next Time which he ended with the fiery memorable passage:

"If we...the relatively conscious whites and the relatively conscious blacks, who must, like lovers, insist on, or create, the consciousness of others--do not falter in our duty now, we may be able, handful that we are, to end the racial nightmare, and achieve our country, and change the history of the world. If we do not dare everything, the fulfillment of that prophecy, re-created from the Bible in song by the slave, is upon us: God gave Noah the rainbow sign, No more water, the fire next time!"

I will never know the pain and fear and rage felt by African-Americans, including the artists who contributed pieces to this innovative anthology full of timely contributions to the current critical conversation on racial relations in the U.S. Nonetheless, if this book can be a bridge to better, fuller understanding by me (which, I think, it most definitely is) and others similarly situated, such a comprehension of the unknown being, after all, one of the main goals of artists and writers, then maybe it will help us all play some part in changing ourselves and perhaps the world for the common good.

Jesmyn Ward, the editor and an author of parts of this book, won the National Book Award for Fiction in 2011 for her novel Salvage the Bones. She begins the book with her hope that:

"this book makes each one of you, dear readers, feel as if we are sitting together, you and me and Baldwin and... all the serious, clear-sighted writers here--and that we are composing our story together. That we are writing an epic wherein black lives carry a worth, wherein black boys can walk to the store and buy candy without thinking they will die, wherein black girls can have a bad day and be mouthy without being physically assaulted by a police officer, wherein cops see twelve-year-old black boys playing with fake guns as silly kids and not homicidal maniacs, wherein black women can stop to ask for directions without being shot in the face by paranoid white homeowners.

I burn, and I hope."

Ms. Ward grew up about an hour from me. She wrote an affecting essay entitled "Cracking the Code," which really made me think about many of us in the United States who don't really know their full ancestry, including me, how this country is truly a melting pot, as it reminded me of how ridiculous and hateful it is that some people still judge others by the color of their skin. In it, she discusses a relatively inexpensive genetic testing company called 23andMe, that she and some other family members used not long ago to find out their ancestry. She grew up as "black" but her dad looked as much Native American as black, and she has relatively light skin for an African-American. Anyway, she talks about how she felt upon finding out that's she's more European than sub-Saharan African; specifically, 40% European-mix of British, Irish, French, German, Scandinavian, Iberian, Italian, and Ashkenazi-- 32% sub-Saharan African, a quarter Native American and less than 1% North African.

Another essay I found particularly thought-provoking, in a book full of poignant essays and verse, was one called "Blacker Than Thou," by Kevin Young, considering the question of Rachel Dolezal:

"It would be one thing...if in her house, to her pillow or family, Dolezal said she felt black... It’s when that somehow translates to what she does, when she teaches black studies as if she’s a black person—not a teacher, but a mind reader—that it becomes a problem. She wears the mask not to hide but to gain authority over the very thing she claims to want to be. How very white of her!"

This anthology has improved my understanding on matters of race and thus effected a change in me. I highly recommend it for anyone seeking to gain different perspectives on race and racial relations in our current political climate.

Powerful and Relevant

This book is a must read for anyone who wants insight into the status of race relations in the US today. It was designed as a response to James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time, which was published in 1962 and is still as relevant today as it was then. While there have been some improvements, there haven't been nearly enough. One of the aspects of the book that I enjoyed was the use of stories and how these demonstrated the strong hold that the past has on our present. Simply because it's behind us doesn't mean that its gone.

Some of the essays in this volume reflect upon the past, while others discuss current events, and a few look to the future. All of the pieces are well-written narratives on the different ways that racism has impacted our culture. Too often we view prejudice as something that happens in other corners of our country, but like the experience that Wendy Walter's described in her essay on looking for one of the oldest negro burial sites in America: we discover that it's right beneath us and we've been driving over it without noticing the whole time.

About the Author
Dudley Andrew is the founder of the Institute for Cinema and Culture at the University of Iowa. He is the author of Major Film Theories (1976) and Mists of Regret: Culture and Sensibility in Classic French Film (1995). Carole Cavanaugh is Associate Professor of Japanese at Middlebury College. She has published widely on Japanese literature and film.

BFI Rarely Disappoints

I follwed the film up by reading Dudely Andrew and Carole Cavanaugh's BFI Film Classic book Sansho Dayu. This informative book discusses the making of the film and the differences between Mizoguchi's film and Mori Ogai's original version. One of the interesting changes Mizoguch made was changing the Jizo statue (protector of children), from Ogai's version with a kannon statue (Bodhisattva of compassion) in the film. Mizoguch also changes several other details like the ages of the children and the reasons for their father's exile. The authors also note that Mizgichi was competitive with Kurosawa and notes the similarities between this film and Rashomon in that both films are adaptations from Taisho period writers who based their stories on Heian periods for the plots, both contain flashbacks, and focus on the general plight and moral condition of human beings. It is a good supplement to the film.

A short introduction to Kenji Mizoguchi's cinematic masterpiece Sansho Dayu, one of the very greatest films ever made. Contains two essays offering two different perspectives and evaluations. Carole Cavanaugh compares and contrasts the film with its literary sources and lauds Mizoguchi's version as a profoundly beautiful vision of indissoluble family ties and a trenchant critique of the Confucian militarism implicit in some earlier versions of the story. Dudley Andrew examines the socio-political aspects of the film's creation & international reception and criticizes what he perceives as Mizoguchi's bleak existentialist vision, quietism, and "inhuman humanism". Each essay contains much useful information and many interesting insights. The prose is clear but a bit stiff and academic.

In this volume Federer provides a variety of statistical designs for intercropping experiments when three or more crops are involved. He describes a variety of different situations and provides specialized solutions. Topics include: (1) constant densities (Chapter 13) , (2) varying densities (Chapter 14), (3) effects of mixing when individual cultivar responses are available (Chapter 15), (4) mixtures when individual responses are not available (Chapter 16)and more. This is the second volume of a text on intercropping experiments and anyone with enough interest to read volume II should certainly get volume I as well. It is well-written, well-researched and presented by an expert in the field of design of agricultural experiments.
This book presents better ways to maximize the information one gets from an intercropping experiment. As the author states the difficulties with three or more crops is an order of magnitude greater than with only two crops. Nevertheless such experiments are common and in today's computing environment the difficulties can be overcome. Due to the algebraic complexity Federer used symbolic computing through tools such as GAUSS, MATHEMATICA and MAPLE to obtain trustworthy results.

Federer has prepared a bibliography of over 3000 references which is so large that it is not included in the text volumes. It can be obtained by going to his university web site or in hard copy or ordered on diskette This is discussed in Chapter 20. The text does contain many other references including research articles and related books in the literature cited sections of the various chapters.

Wonderful book on marriage!

I've read a lot of books on marriage and I have to say that this is the best! I really appreciate the relevance of this book to married life. It helps you realize that you have no control of other people (namely your spouse) but you do have a say in who has control over you ... and this should be the Holy Spirit. Tim Lahaye shows you how you can live a Spirit filled life and deals with real struggles like fear and anger ... letting emotions control you and hinder the Spirit's work in your life.
A lot of times in dealing with marriage issues we focus on dealing with the issues of our spouse ... Tim shows how we need to deal with ourselves and give our marriages and our spouses to the Lord.
I also appreciate the way he incorporates the personality types in this book. It is important to realize that we all were wonderfully designed by God DIFFERENTLY.
In addition to this book I would highly recommend reading The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman. I thought these two books work wonderfully together in teaching about our differences, as well as how to meet our mate's needs, be obedient to God in marriage, and have a more fulfilling marriage relationship.

The Realities of Marriage

I love all of Tim Lahaye's books on the four temperaments but I think this is my favorite. He begins by explaining the strengths and weaknesses of the four basic temperaments and then explores the twelve temperament combinations. As you read this book you will probably think of certain people in your life and you will definitely figure out your own temperament combination.

"Sometimes it takes marriage to reveal what a person really is." ~ Pg. 148

Tim Lahaye spends the rest of the book giving practical advice to married couples. He explains why you should avoid criticism like the plague, how you can learn to apologize and forgive, and how you can become best friends.

It may seem obvious but anger and fear are two very destructive forces. However before I read this book I didn't realize that fear was as dangerous as anger when it comes to your health.

Tim Lahaye has written some of the most useful books I've ever read. This one completely gave me a deeper understanding of life and how to interact more successfully with other people. The "Steps to Conquer Selfishness" is worth the price of the book.

While reading this book I had a deep sense of happiness and felt the renewal of hope. If I had to pick one marriage book that would save your marriage this would be it! It really covers all the basics!

BEAUTIFUL BIBLE! One Of The Best 4-In-1 Bibles Made Today!

The Comparative Study Bible takes the complete texts of four
popular Bibles each acclaimed for its distinctive translational features and sets them side-by-side for fast, easy comparison.
This revised version offers important updates that make it more useful than ever. Includes the beloved King James translation, Amplified version, New International version, and the Updated NASB with the words of Christ in RED in all translations.
This ASIN that I am reviewing is the leatherbound edition. It is bound in beautiful top grade burgundy leather with a satin bookmark & exceptional binding. Pretty endpages and gold gilded pages make this Bible a great gift for ANY occasion or a well-deserved gift for yourself.

Should be called "The Comparative Bible"

As a bible student I know that finding a good translation is hard some often don't render some verses clearly and some are bias and others give the wrong impression from their wording. Some say just buy the KJV but most people can't read or understand its archaic langauge. From multiple translations you can really understand what a verse is saying and the meaning behind it therefore the Comparative Study Bible is a great buy. It takes four different bible translations and puts them side by side one in each column for you to compare and contrast. It saves time because you only have to find one page rather than going through four different books its a great idea this bible!
Zondervan also produce a Today's Parallel Bible it is almost identical to the Comparative Study bible except for the middle translation the Parallel uses a New Living Translation (NLT) a bible that translates the verse using a different wording that best presents the meaning the verse is trying to express. This translation is good for reading but not for studying as its not the exact word but someone's intrepretation of it. The Comparative uses a Amplified Bible which tries to compress as much information as possible into each verse and has quite extensive footnotes and cross references to similar passages features the NLT does not have. The other 3 translations are exactly the same in both bibles the 1873 King James Version, New International Version (NIV) and the New American Standard Bible (NASB)
In the NLT it reads at Matthew 24:15 "The time will come when you see what Daniel the prophet spoke about: the sacriegious object that causes descreation standing in the Holy Place - reader pay attention" if you prefer a NLT then I recommend the Parallel. The same verse from the AMP "So when you see the appalling sacriledge [the abomination that causes and makes desolate], spoken of by the prophet Daniel standing in the Holy Place - let the reader take notice and ponder and consider and heed this" [Dan 9:27; 11:31; 12:11] if you like the AMP then I recommend the Comparative Study Bible. They are both great bibles and great buys all you need to decide is which one the Parallel or Comparative I bought both.

Excellent Value in the Leather-Bound Edition

For 55 years, I only read the Bible in the King James Version although I sometimes went to services where the pastor cited other translations. It was quite a revelation to me when I first read The New King James: Suddenly, many things became clear for the first time. With that encouragement (and being a daily Bible reader), I decided it was time to expand my translation horizons. After going through The Learning Bible in the Contemporary English Version, I felt that I was ready for a stiffer challenge.

When I saw that this Bible included the familiar (to me) King James, the scholarly Amplified, the accessible but expensive New International Version, and the literal but sometimes confusing New American Standard, I was sold. I also like to own leather-bound Bibles and the additional cost over a hard-bound copy from Amazon's More Buying Choices was small.

I decided that I would read two chapters a day, one in the morning and one in the evening, until I finished the Bible. At first, I started with the King James Version. That wasn't such a great choice. After awhile, I shifted to the Amplified first. That gave me the broadest perspective on the chapter. Next, I would typically move to the New American Standard which wasn't as hard to understand after seeing the Amplified. Third, I would go to the NIV which improved my understanding the most. Then, I would end with the King James and come away with a broader perspective than ever before on the material.

In retrospect, I would have gotten more benefit if I had also read a commentary along with the translations. Then, this would have been more like a Bible study experience. I've remedied that by now starting the New Living Translation backed up by Willmington's Guide to the Bible.

Naturally, if you can read Hebrew, these aren't the best resources for you. But I don't, so I found these side-by-side translations provided me with many insights and a sense of being much closer to the Lord. It was a blessing to me to invest the time with this Bible. I intend to return to it along with a different commentary sometime next year.
