That would be like reading a whole encyclopedia and then being asked to recall only the important things that will get you from point A to point B. Even worse, much of the information you get will contradict the last thing you read. It's like finding a needle in a haystack only to be told it's the wrong needle. There is a much better approach. It's an approach that doesn't require you to know a lot to get started. You only need to know enough to get to the next step in your process.

There is truly nothing stopping you from becoming a music producer. The ones who are successful now are the ones who started from nothing and chipped away at it until they found a way to express their unique voice. There are no gatekeepers making decisions on who is worthy and who isn't. The determining factor is you, your habits and your confidence in yourself.

This book can be read from start to finish, or as a “choose your own adventure”, going directly to what you think can help you most right now. Don't get caught up thinking you have to devour everything before getting started. That isn't necessary, and isn't the point of the book.

The core concepts in the book will come up time & time again which should help you retain them & be able to recall them when the need arrives. By exploring these concepts from several angles you should gain a broad view of their many uses.

My hope is that this book is used as a toolbox. You simply find the right tool that moves you forward and get back to work. So few people, who have more than enough information in their heads, ever start. Of those who do start, even fewer finish what they started and are satisfied with the results. I want you to be in that small group of finishers.

One of the best music books I've read.

I've read a lot of music books. This ranks among the top as far as immediate impact. It changed my approach and thinking. I believe it will help me for years to come.

In a single phrase, the book's message is "Just freaking write." The author argues that if you want to be a songwriter/producer the best thing you can do is... write songs! And write them often. He stresses making a habit out of writing and >finishing< songs. The more you do it the better you get at it. Seems like common sense.

One other thing I want to mention is his advice on learning songwriting/producing techniques in electronic music. He suggests you keep your learning to bite size nuggets that can be used immediately. Don't overload your mind with information and then expect to remember 1000 pieces of knowledge when you sit down to write. Learn 1 thing, try it/use it. Again, good advice.

Overall this is a winner if you're like me and struggle to be productive with songwriting.

Sage Advice for Producers, Song Writers, and DJs

This book will help you stop spinning your wheels and actually finish your productions, improve your production skills, and develop your own original sound. It will give you insight into how to make better use of the time you already spend on music and give you ideas for how to find even more time for it. It also has some great tips on the creative and technical aspects of production, including developing melodies, basses and rhythm, and EQ, mixing, compression, reverb, delay, filtering, etc. The author is a successful producer and also includes tips on getting noticed and getting signed to a label. I think that a wider audience of musicians and producers would benefit from the book, not just electronic musicians and DJs.

The ideas and principles in this book have single-handedly gotten me back in the studio and helped turn down the volume on my inner critic that often keeps me from moving forward towards track completion.

It reads more like a conversation you might have with a mentor that understands the struggles you are facing and isn't afraid to recount their own mistakes, pitfalls and triumphs as a way to pull you forward.

The main takeaway for me is this: make music everyday; avoid distractions; keep finishing tracks--whether they are just for me or for others.

If you are new to India, don't go there without reading this book!

I can't imagine how I would have navigated (literally and socially) through my first and lengthy trip to India if I hadn't first read this book. India is an absolutely awesome country, But, for someone like me (from the U.S.) it is also much like being on a different planet. My journey through India from Delhi to Bangalore was the most exciting of my life. But, I have to attribute much of my "comfort" during that journey to having been as culturally prepared as possible before I got there by reading this book.

Fun to read, possibly may be exaggerated

I'm glad I read this book because I shared it with my fianc� who is from India. We plan to travel there soon. He said the babies peeing on the ground freely is not true. He never experienced seeing that. But it was good to know no kisses in public. Fun to draw our conversations and see what is true and not true.

Recommend with a the notion of taken with a grain of salt. Very exciting and fun read. I just have to go and see for myself what is true or exaggerated.

About the Author
Richard Marsden is Emeritus Professor of Old English at the University of Nottingham. In addition to numerous articles on Old English literature and language and the history of the Latin Bible, he has published The Text of the Old Testament in Anglo-Saxon England (Cambridge, 1995) and an edition of The Old English Heptateuch for the Early English Text Society (2008).

An excellent Old English reader, once you have already learned Old English.

This is an excellent, large, diverse, "canon-expanding" reader of Old English. No other Old English reader on the market has this range of texts, so any student or scholar of Old English will want this on their shelf. From my point of view, this makes an excellent reader of Old English once one has learned the fundamentals and really worked through a grammar book and perhaps an introduction to the poetry like Pope and Fulk's Eight Old English Poems (Third Edition). Using the "look inside" feature will show you the huge number and range of texts Marsden has included.

Marsden has expressly said he tried to give the student every support he could in this book. While it is not intended as an introductory teaching grammar, there is a crash course in Old English at the beginning, and a reference grammar is included in the book. There is also a comprehensive glossary in the back. What is more, virtually every significant word in the readings is also glossed in marginal notes, while troublesome passages, idioms, clauses, and phrases, are glossed in footnotes on each page of the readings. This goes far beyond usual practice in other readings in supplying help to the student. Marsden believes students these days need all encouragement to wade their way into the subject. That is admirable, and he is perhaps right, however, therein lies a danger for one who uses this as their first introduction to Old English and wants to do more than acquire a surface appreciation of the texts. Because Marsden has made it too easy for the student not to figure out difficult sections on their own, too easy for the student not to memorize vocabulary and forms. For some, this surface acquaintance with the language may be sufficient, and that is fine. For those who want to go deeper, I suggest starting with another book, such as Baker's Introduction to Old English or Fulk's An Introductory Grammar of Old English with an Anthology of Readings (MEDIEVAL & RENAIS TEXT STUDIES)

That being said, once one has safely learned the fundamentals, Marsden serves as an excellent anthology to broaden your acquaintance with Old English literature, one for which there is no competitor. His short introductory essays on each reading are superb. His marginal and footnote glossing is quite good, though not, in my experience, 100% reliable (another reason to approach it with some Old English under your belt). I cannot comment on the quality of the included reference grammar as I have not used it, but the comprehensive glossary is quite good, and unlike in the main text, Marsden has here overpointed c and g where required.

I think this book will continue to be uniquely useful through the decades.
