An armchair journey to the City of Light

First, I need to say i received a free digital edition of this book from Reading Deals Review Club in exchange for an honest review. Second I want to say that I don't always enjoy the books they have on offer and am disappointed ina lot of their offerings. Third i want to say That's Paris! is an excellent anthology of stories based in the city of Paris! I thoroughly enjoyed it! There are stories from every taste from romance to history, from memoir to Gothic. Some are funny while others tug at the heartstrings. There are even a few stories with both an English and French version. I have never been to Paris and probably will never get the chance to visit that amazing city but the great thing about reading is books can take you there and you don't even have to leave your house! Finally I want to say That's Paris! is a great addition to any reader's French related books collection.

Book Review: THAT'S PARIS!: AN ANTHOLOGY

Ah, Paris.

Just the word evokes images that inspire the very essence of Europe, in all its splendor and insouciance, the laissez-faire lifestyle, the casual beauty, the easy unassuming atmosphere. From sunlit cafes to iconic architecture to some of the most unique social mores and some of the oddest laws in existence, the city of Paris is nothing if not wholly spectacular.

Welcome, then, to THAT'S PARIS!: AN ANTHOLOGY OF LIFE, LOVE AND SARCASM IN THE CITY OF LIGHT, to be released in Kindle edition on February 2 (print edition published just this month) by Velvet Morning Press.

Featuring essays, anecdotes, and personal stories, the anthology is an absolute triumph whose success lies in its ability to convey the dozens of facets that, together, comprise the sparkling gem that is the City of Light.

Some of the contributions are tongue-in-cheek, like "(Mis)Adventures at Sacre-Coeur" by Amy Lynne Hayes, who writes about the time she visited Paris with her ex and his new girlfriend (talk about awkward!).

Some contributions are self-deprecating, as are "The French Table, a Test of Mettle" by Audrey M. Chapuis (about her experience with French cuisine) and "Signs, Signs, Everywhere Signs" by Vicki Lesage (a roll-on-the-floor-in-sympathetic-laughter treatise of an odder aspect of French culture).

Some of the writing represents the more ridiculous ("This One Time in Paris" by Sarah del Rio) and some of it, the miraculous ("Half Past Midnight" by Didier Quemener). Often, the works are both touching and heartbreaking ("A Scoop of Henry" by Cheryl McAlister, or "Love Unlocked" by Adria J. Cimino, or "Les Urgences" by David Whitehouse).

Regardless of perspective or style, however, all of the additions to the anthology (of which there are many more, by an array of gifted authors) are powerfully insightful and eye-opening. Picture Paris in a thousand different ways, through a thousand different lenses, and you have imagined what That's Paris! achieves in a microcosm.

I sighed, chuckled, cried, and laughed until I cried as I read my way through the collection, one story at a time like one bite after another of a superb multifaceted meal, brilliantly prepared and impeccably served.

You'll never look at Paris the same way again. I promise.

This book is more valuable than a free annual carte d'orange

Not since Baldwin's Giovanni's Room has a book taken me to Paris is such a visceral way. Anyone who has ever studied, lived or visited Paris will immediately connect with the feelings of being so blatantly foreign yet wanting to blend in. One of my favorite stories, The Little Book of Funerals, captures an American's fascination with the Parisian sidewalk caf�. Why are French people so much better in every aspect at sitting outside, drinking and eating?
You may never be considered a Parisian if you are not born there but it's clear from That's Paris, foreigners, in the tradition of Baldwin, Hemingway and Stein, are better at observing and reporting on the magic in the city of lights. But this more recent lost generation of writers provides many more laughs.
This holiday season, everyone I know who has done a semester in Paris or anyone who has simply had a one night stand while on a French business trip, will be gifted That's Paris.

About the Author
Dr Reddy is a Distinguished Professor and inaugural holder of the Oscar S. Wyatt Endowed Chair in Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. Dr Reddy has been a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin, a Research Scientist for Lockheed Missiles and Space Company, and Professor of Engineering at the University of Oklahoma from 1975 to 1980, at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University from 1980 to 1992, and now at Texas A&M University since 1992. Dr Reddy is the author of more than 300 journal papers and 14 textbooks on theoretical formulations and finite-element analysis of problems in solid and structural mechanics (plates and shells), composite materials, computational fluid dynamics, numerical heat transfer, and applied mathematics. He is the first recipient of the University of Oklahoma College of Engineering's Award for Outstanding Faculty Achievement in Research, the 1984 Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the 1985 Alumni Research Award at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and the 1992 Worcester Reed Warner Medal and 1995 Charles Russ Richards Memorial Award of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Dr Reddy is a Fellow of the American Academy of Mechanics (AAM), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the ASME, the American Society of Composites (ASC), the International Association of Computational Mechanics (IACM), the U.S. Association of Computational Mechanics (USACM), the Aeronautical Society of India (ASI), and the American Society of Composite Materials. Worked well for self-study

I taught myself FEM for a project that needed it from this book. The book was well structured and clearly written such that I needed no other outside resources to figure out what to do. (The project was a mechanical simulation for part of a physics experiment I was working on.) Would recommend without hesitation to the self-studier.

One of the Best Textbooks in FE

Not only was I introduced to the infinite world of Finite Elements through this book, but I have also used it in the FE class I teach at UCSD. I have found the variational formulations approach most helpful as it fits anyone in the various disciplines of engineering and applied mathematics. "Give me the field equation and I shall develop the FE model" is the motto I have used to build a career in FE; and Dr. Reddy's Book was certainly the cornerstone. OK..I am biased...Dr. Reddy was my doctoral advisior; he is the best in the business.

a very good book

I learnt FE from this book. It is clear, coincise, full of well-worked examples. It covers almost all of the aspectes of FE programming. The book contains two educational codes, thought both are FORTRAN77 code, one can easily understand what's going on, so as to rewrite it in C or, say, FORTRAN90.
The first s chapters of the book regard the FEm method in general, the 4th focuses on structural mechanics, 5th is about errors in FE analysis, 6th and 7th about numerical integration and 8th is on 2 and 3 dimension FE problem.
Actually this is an introductory book, so the 2 and 3 D problems are not deeply trated.
The book is never hard to understand, and it's suitable (waw!!) for self study.

James W. Nybakken is a professor of biological sciences at the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, a consortium operation of seven of the California State Universities. Dr. Nybakken is a fellow of the California Academy of Sciences and has served as an officer in five scientific societies.

Mark D. Bertness is the chair of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Brown University, where he has taught for 25 years. His areas of expertise include the ecology and conservation of natural shoreline communities, as well as salt-marsh and rocky-shore ecology and conservation, which he has studied extensively in South America. Dr. Bertness earned his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in 1979.

I had to buy this book for a marine ecology class. I found the text very easy to understand and straightforward. It covers a wide variety of subjects, but because of this it does not go into great detail on many things, which is unfortunate.

About the Author
Tim Stevens is Senior Investigator Scientist at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge. He researches single-cell 3D genome architecture and provides computational biology oversight, development and training within the Cell Biology Division.

Wayne Boucher, a mathematician and theoretical physicist by training, is a senior postdoctoral associate and computing technician for the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge. He teaches undergraduate mathematics and postgraduate programming courses, and is currently developing software for the analysis of biological molecules by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
