About the Author
Marguerite Manteau Rao, MS, MBA, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker specializing in bringing new, innovative solutions to the field of dementia care. Marguerite's dementia advocacy work is inspired by her experience as a long-distance caregiver for her mother, and thousands of encounters with persons with dementia and their family members. She is the CEO of the Presence Care Project, and the founder of the Mindfulness-Based Dementia Care (MBDC) program, first incubated at the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. She is also the co-founder of Neurocern, a software company aimed at empowering dementia caregivers with neuroscience-based, person-centered care solutions. Marguerite is a Huffington Post contributor.

Helpful in Easing the Suffering That Comes with Dementia

I have been caring for my husband, who has Lewy Body Dementia, for more than ten years. Books for caregivers always tell me to take good care of myself by eating right and getting a manicure. This book goes so much deeper, to the heart of anxiety. Suffering is wishing my life to be other than it is. Mindfulness (which is taught here in small steps) reveals how to be more at ease in the moment. Both when I am with my darling and when I am with myself. I recommend this book very highly for individuals and for professionals in the "memory care" fields. Wish I had it earlier.

Wisdom and compassion

This guidebook beautifully combines practicality with compassion. Marguerite Manteau-Rao offers step-by-step guidance on supporting and interacting with people who have dementia, always taking care to honor the humanness of both patient and care partner. As the subtitle notes, the aim is to "make the best of the journey” of dementia.
The key to the process is mindfulness, which Manteau-Rao skillfully describes not as a mere technique, but as a way of living. Mindfulness brings clarity to each moment, allowing greater compassion and depth of interaction between people. It can also help balance the mind, provide a broader perspective, and open the heart – when practiced regularly. To facilitate this, the book contains several dozen formal and informal practices to help the reader begin to live mindfully. These have been adapted and tuned to fit the situation of caring for a loved one with dementia.
What makes this book stand out from the dozens of “mindfulness-based guides” on the bookshelves today is that Manteau-Rao is speaking from her own deep and long-term experience. She has practiced mindfulness and meditation regularly for years in a Buddhist context; other practitioners will readily recognize this in her language, such as the inclusion of classical lovingkindness phrases, a focus on equanimity and calmness, and the framing of situations in terms of suffering and the end of suffering. Her instructions are right in line with ancient spiritual wisdom.
Furthermore, Manteau-Rao has direct experience with dementia. The death of her mother from Alzheimer’s inspired the development of Mindfulness-Based Dementia Care, in the hope that other caregivers and their loved ones could benefit from using mindfulness and from having clear, accurate information about the oft-misunderstood phenomenon of dementia.
Manteau-Rao also volunteered with the Zen Hospice Project, a powerful program in which meditation practitioners sit with dying people as both a service and a practice. Her experience with people undergoing the bodily and mental changes that accompany death shines through in her ability both to honor the death process as sacred and to hold it lightly, sometimes even with a touch of humor.
Caring for a Loved One with Dementia is structured something like the journey that it aims to support. It begins with factual information about dementia and mindfulness, then orients the reader in their very human role as care partner. Next come several chapters of invaluable advice on how to use mindfulness in the real situation of being with your loved one with dementia – both in interacting with the person and in handling your internal emotions, thoughts, and resistance to the situation.
With this basis, the reader is empowered to take on the advanced practices of communication and handling distress and other challenging situations. Manteau-Rao makes even this potentially daunting terrain seem accessible and manageable.
After a chapter reminding the reader of the necessity of self-care – it is truly not optional – the book ends on the positive note of clearly conveying the fruits that will come from applying mindfulness to dementia care. These are sure to arise with the ongoing practice of living a mindful life.
This guidebook has the potential to benefit greatly both care partners and they people they care for. It offers a wide range of practical tasks and suggested approaches in a readable style that does not cut corners on spiritual depth.

Terrific book!

This is a wonderful book for anyone who deals with someone diagnosed with dementia. It is a hands-on handbook that is clear, concise, and practical. Many of the most important points are repeated and reinforced simply and lovingly. I recommend this book to anyone who has had experience in this area as well as newcomers. There is something for everyone in it!
