The perfect cookbook for folks who live alone.

I love to cook and I love new cookbooks. I read a review of this one in our local newspaper about a month ago and I knew I had to have it. From breakfast to desserts, I have found many recipes I want to try.

The book has multiple features that I like. Chief ones are that the recipes call for ingredients normally stocked by cooks who enjoy preparing meals; they can be whipped up in a hurry and microwaved in minutes; and they taste good.
Many of them are prepared and baked in a 16-oz mug. That’s the size of my two-cup Pyrex measuring cup.

To date I have made Quinoa Chile, Crumb Coffeecake, Kale and Barley Soup, Tomato- Couscous- Chickpea Soup, Salmon Chowder, Antipasto Pasta, and Bread Pudding and I’ve had this book less than a month.

I’ve enjoyed each of these dishes. I am recently widowed and this book is helping me to continue to eat wholesome food because it is so easy to “stir it up.”

Great book

My wife and I have already used this book more than any cookbook we have bought in the recent years (and we buy a lot). Recipes are all pantry friendly, especially great for lunches and breakfasts. So much cheaper and healthier and interesting than canned soups, frozen dinners and the like. We bought one each for our single son and daughter in college. They are both using and enjoying their copies a lot, too.

The few mug meals I have tried so far are pretty good. I like that it takes only a few minutes to prepare and cook.
The ingredients are things I have, I don't have to get special foods or spices, I like that it makes one serving and I don't have left overs.

Choose Carefully What You Really Care About

Much of the writing in THE SUBTLE ART OF NOT GIVING is tongue-in-cheek. Surprisingly, however, there is a lot in this book that is SERIOUS. I know, I know, with a title like that, it's hard to believe, but it's true. Mark Manson actually makes quite a few substantive, helpful points.

Mark makes it clear that he's NOT saying you should not care about anything. Not at all. What he is saying is that you should pick carefully WHICH things you care about: "This book will help you think a little bit more clearly about what you’re choosing to find important in life and what you’re choosing to find unimportant." He's not suggesting we should be indifferent; rather, carefully deciding where to place our concern.

How you pick your top concerns has practical consequences. Mark gives a real-world example about a cranky person in the check-out line at the market. The elderly customer is making a big fuss about some minor thing. Why? Because they don't have anything else to occupy their time. If you don't have anything substantive to occupy your time, then it's trivial stuff that bothers you: "Your ex-boyfriend’s new Facebook picture, how quickly the batteries die in the TV remote, missing out on yet another two-for-one sale on hand sanitizer—chances are you don’t have much going on in your life..."

Mark suggests just picking a few big things--values and people that reflect your values: "What I’m talking about here is essentially learning how to focus and prioritize your thoughts effectively—how to pick and choose what matters to you and what does not matter to you based on finely honed personal values."

Much of life is about solving problems. They are inevitable, and we shouldn't pretend that we can make them go away. The author has no kind words for those embracing victimhood: "People deny and blame others for their problems for the simple reason that it’s easy and feels good, while solving problems is hard and often feels bad."

On a serious note, the author relates a horrific experience from his youth, when a drunken friend took a dare, jumped into a lake and drowned. "The most transformational moment of my life occurred when I was nineteen years old." This tragedy led to a determination to change the direction of his life, and figure out what is most important: "Oddly, it was someone else’s death that gave me permission to finally live. And perhaps the worst moment of my life was also the most transformational."

The last part of the book has a serious tone--quite different in tone than the first part of the book. This part of the book is more philosophical. The author refers often to a book, "The Denial of Death," (which became a Pulitzer Prize winner.) In serious, heartfelt chapters, the author reflects on human existence, and our search for meaning in life.

All in all, I found THE SUBTLE ART to be a fascinating read. The author writes well, and the book is easy to follow. Don't be fooled by the title, however, a lot of this book is very serious.

A surprisingly serious book - in a good way

There are a dozen of topics Mark goes through in this book. Some of the main themes are these:

(1) Choosing what to care about; focusing on the things/problems that are actually meaningful/important (= "giving a f*** about the right things")
(2) Learning to be fine with some negative things; always aiming for positivity isn't practical, and is stressful in itself
(3) Taking responsibility of your own life; it's good for your self-esteem not to keep blaming the circumstances for your problems
(4) Understanding the importance of honesty and boundaries, especially in relationships
(5) Identity; it might a good idea not to commit strongly to any special identity such as "an undiscovered genius", because then any challenges will make you fear the potential loss of that identity you've clinged to
(6) Motivation; how to improve it by accepting failure and taking action
(7) Death; how learning to be more comfortable with one's own mortality can make it easier to live

The first 20% of this book were a little bit boring to read, but after that, the experience was very absorbing. Just like Manson's previous book (Models), I will give this one five stars.

(BTW this book wasn't as humorous as I expected. It was much more a serious than a funny book to read. The final chapters, discussing the acceptance of death, made me actually a little bit tense and distressed.)

This book is scary

This is one of the best books I have ever read. The information that is in the book is to scary and at the same way helpful. In the middle of reading this book I felt like, then what is the point on living? Why just don't die if we are going to do it anyways. I started to feel strange inside of me. I was scared because everything he writes about Is true. We all try to hard on impressing people. Try hard to make big goals and try to achieve them. But in the end we do it not for ourselfs we do it for the attention we will get in the result for that. We are not special, but in the same time we are. We are all unique bit not more special than the others. We live our life trying to be "successful" and convince ourself that it is because we want it for us. But in some cases we are not. We (and when I mean "we" I mean myself) try so much to achieve goals working hard everyday trying to come closer to that goal. But when I readed this book my eyes opened. I was wrong. I was not doing it for myself. I was doing it to prove others I am worth of their attention. Because I wanted to feel special because yeah. I always said to myself "nobody work hard enough for success so I am special I work harder than the others and that is why i deserve it more". I was every day working hard, I did not want to accept it but when I readed this book it really hurted me. I felt like he was 100% seeing through me. I felt like my life was pointless. All I did, the goals I was pursuing was only to make other think in the future. "Wow he is special. He worked hard to obtaining he's goals. He is inspiring". I wanted to show the people that made me feel bad about myself see me in the future and look up on me and say to themselves. "Well I think I am the real loser". But in this book I began to think. I was always looking at other people judging them about being at their 30-40 having a s***ty job, family, complaining about everyone and everything etc. Or the ones on my ages always working hard, making fools of themselves trying to get the attention of others. Or people screaming at others just to feel like they are better than the other person. I always felt sorry about them. When reading this book I realised I am exactly at them. We live our whole life trying to be somebody. When the real thing we should do is try to be the person we want to be. But it is not easy. The society always look up to successes and winners but never at the ones that are not that "successful" but are happy. And that make us all feel like we are not enough. Which we think is true. We give fu*ks about so many things that are not really important and that does not mean anything at all. The fact that we are going to die is terrifying. Not because we don't know what comes next, it's because, we thing yeah if we all will die then what is the point of trying? That's the reason this book is good it does not just make you unsure about all your beliefs. It also makes you realise that it does not mather at all if you are going to die. The real problem is what you should care about while you are alive. The old lady crossing the road in the pace of a turtle. Or the really fact that we are alive and are able to choose what we want to care about.

Why did i writte a so long post? Well because if this can help somebody in my situation it will be nice. And the other reason was for myself. Because even if I say I don't care I actually care about what others think about me, and even if you don't know me in person. Knowing someone readed this and got the inspiration to read the book then it's enough for me. To feel like I did something good.

And the third reason is because I liked the super hero "Disappointed Panda". He is cool and I would like a hero like that. Instead of the false super heroes that lies to others just to get liked by them.

So this is an executive book. It gives a new way to look at things. I really recomend it for the people that are tired of this world and the humans on it, and even worst that tries way to hard to imprese those humans you hate, because you were told that is the right way to fulfill yourself. "You should do like the rest",they said. It does not help in the long run. It have never and will never!

Method book I teach from

I teach from this method book. The teacher who said this isn't innovative or revolutionary or whatever is right: how much innovation can there be to a book about music?

What this book does is comprehensively introduce students to music, the guitar, different techniques, scales, chords, melodies, and covers more material than most technique systems do in any three books, saving my students money because they only have to buy this one book.

The teacher teaches. The book is a tool. This is a good one, and I usually keep a few on the shelf so my students have one to take home from their first lesson.

About the Author

Antoinette am Zehnhoff-Dinnesen studied medical sciences in D�sseldorf and Bonn. In 1983 she became a medical specialist in ENT diseases and in 1986, a medical specialist in phoniatrics and pedaudiology. In 1988, she gained her Habilitation from D�sseldorf University for her work on regulation of vocal amplitude and frequency during voice onset. In 1990 Dr. am Zehnhoff-Dinnesen was appointed Professor of Phoniatrics and Pedaudiology at the Medical Faculty of Philipps University in Marburg. The following year she became Professor at the Medical Faculty at the Westphalian Wilhelms University of M�nster, where she is Head of the Clinic of Phoniatrics and Pedaudiology. She is author or co-author of more than 100 original papers in German and English language on various aspects of phoniatrics and pedaudiology and co-author of several books. She has been both Secretary and President of the German Society of Phoniatrics and Pedaudiology. In 2011, she was elected President of the Union of the European Phoniatricians (UEP) for the 2011–2014 term.

Tadeus Nawka studied medicine at Humboldt University in Berlin and then trained in ENT in Cottbus before specialising in Phoniatrics and Pedaudiology at the Charit� in Berlin. He completed his scientific education at Harvard Medical School in 1994, after which he became Assistant Professor for ENT/Phoniatrics and Pedaudiology. After a three years term as a surgeon at the ENT department of the St. Georg Hospital in Hamburg, in 1999 Dr. Nawka became Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Phoniatrics and Pedaudiology at the University of Greifswald. Since 2009 he has been Professor and Head of the Division of Voice and Swallowing at the Department of Audiology and Phoniatrics, Charit� - University Medicine Berlin. His main interests are diagnosis and treatment of voice and swallowing disorders and phonosurgery.

Bożena Wiskirska-Woźnica studied at the Medical University of Gdansk before specializing in Otorhinolaryngology at the Medical University of Bydgoszcz and in Phoniatrics and Audiology at the Poznan University of Medical Sciences. In 1981 she completed her doctoral thesis on EMG examination of cricopharyngeal muscle in laryngectomised. In 2002 she subsequently gained her PhD and Habilitation in Phoniatrics & Audiology from the Poznan University of Medical Sciences, the latter for work on complex voice estimation in organic and functional voice disorders. Dr. Wiskirska-Woźnica is currently Head of the Chair & Department of Phoniatrics and Audiology at Poznan University of Medical Sciences. She is also President of the Phoniatric Section of the Polish Otorhinolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery Society and a board Member of the UEP. She is the author or co-author of more than 80 original papers in Polish and English language medical journals and over the 15 chapters in several books.

Katrin Neumann studied medicine at the University of Leipzig. She is currently Head of the Department of Phoniatrics and Pediatric Audiology and of the Hearing and Cochlea Implant Center at the University of Bochum, Germany. Dr. Neumann chairs the Technology Committee of the Coalition on Global Hearing Health. In addition, she has chaired the Audiology Committee of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP), where she also works as a consultant on the Fluency Committee. She contributes to the work of the WHO Prevention of Deafness and Hearing Impairment Team as a member of the WHO Expert Advisory Board and is WHO Officer of the Union of European Phoniatricians (UEP). Dr. Neumann is an Associate Editor of several international journals and has received national and international awards, including the 2014 European Phoniatrics Hearing EUHA Award. Her research interests are wide ranging, and she has published more than 190 original articles, monographs, and book chapters.

I have read several great golf books lately but this one really stood out

I have read several great golf books lately but this one really stood out. Once I opened it I could not put it down. The mental game in golf is the key to take your game to the next level. This book was that X factor that helped me understand why I was acting like such a hormonal teenager on the course and how to stop these bad habits. The methods have really helped me get better, but more importantly it helped me enjoy the game more. In fact, the first 18 holes after reading this was some of my best and most enjoyable golf ever- after 8 years of playing. I still had my outbursts, but I was conscious of them and recorded them. By the 10th hole, I was so in the zone I was really surprising myself with the accuracy, distance and a short game I didn't even know I had. What a feeling. Sure there were the "thats not what I expected" moments but they did not ruin the experience of a great round! Highly recommend this book. I immediately gave it to my best bud who had literally thrown his club 20 feet in the very same game. I said read this it will change your golf life and our playing relationship.

not bad, but not as good as Golf is Not a Game of Perfect

This and Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Bob Rotella were recommended reading for improving the mental aspect of golf. Although this book had interesting tidbits of information I just didn't get as much out of it as the other book. The two books had similar information, but Rotella's book was an easier read with examples and practice ideas to prepare yourself to perform. If you are trying to become the best golfer you can then it's a must read, but if you are trying to decide on this or Rotella's. Choose the other.

I have read this book twice and will continue to read it to improve my game. It is structured to provide positive habits to focus on playing in a relaxed manner. Great book!

Fun and intriguing read for those looking to learn about the business model that's taking over today's economy

This is a fun and intriguing read for anyone who is looking to create their own startup or learn more about the business model that is taking over today's economy. Modern Monopolies explains how the economy is changing into an on-demand, sharing economy and how companies are evolving from linear business models to platforms. The book goes into great detail to explain the infrastructure behind the platform business model and how to form a successful platform. Each chapter has numerous stories about successes and failures of companies and the greater entrepreneurial lessons to learn from these stories. As a college business student, I found myself learning a great deal from this book about the emerging world of platforms and how to adapt and thrive in such an environment.

Pokemon Go Champion Teaches Us about the New Economy. Great Read for investors and entrepreneurs.

Moazed and Johnson write very clearly, it is relevant to the firms in the news and to the rise and decline of the members of the new economy.
What is hard to see given their vision is how profits are sustainably made in the sectors called the new economy.

When you read this book with the awareness that monopolies have always been associated with exploitation of consumers you learn to see clearly that the nature of market structure has changed in some of these sectors.

In the old days one firm providing to consumers could exploit their market power. That was harmful. It still is harmful in many markets (Medical insurance and pharma for instance) but there is now a new breed of market structures where so called network effects make it cheaper and more efficient if one service provider sits in the middle as matchmaker between buyers and sellers. It is an analogue to what was once called a natural monopoly in the economics profession. But there is an interesting dimension here in that while one firm may be the only firm in the market the position of that firm may be contestable (subject to competition to be replaced) by other entrants who are trying to provide a better service connecting buyers and sellers.

Contestable Markets where potential entrants discipline the pricing power of incumbent firms was explored by Baumol, Panzar and Willig years ago and this logic is relevant to what these authors are presenting. So at one level the presence of one firm does not mean that their is exploitation of consumers going on necessarily. That is the difference between what they call a "Modern Monopoly" and what might be called a traditional monopoly.

The authors are practitioners but they also bring conceptual framework based on economic theory to their perspective. This book can be used by entrepreneurs and market participants to refine their strategy. It can also be used by investors who are trying to understand what drives profit in this sector and why the sector is so disruptive to traditional commerce (retail etc.)

It would be nice if in the paperback edition they add a section on so called Fintech that is disrupting the traditional branch banking business and the portfolio management world. There is a lot of inefficiency that can be rooted out of that parasitical system.

The paperback edition of the book might also give us an introduction to the platform structure of online gaming and its role in the future of education. That chapter should be easy for them to add given that one of the co-authors, Nicholas Johnson, is the first North American and Global winner of Pokemon Go.

Modern Monopolies tells the story of online platforms - who are becoming powerful middlemen by facilitating transactions through their two-sided network. Uber, AirBnB, Ebay, Alibaba, and others don't operate any services themselves, but merely connect consumers to suppliers. By signing up and connecting the two sides they are building zero marginal cost businesses while taking advantage of dynamics which lead to one dominant platform in a market. The value grows as the number of connections increase.

However, setting up a new platform is not a build-it-and-they-will-come overnight success. Platforms need to be properly structured, offer the right features, and change and adapt over time. The best platforms have pivoted many times in their history. Facebook and Twitter are almost unrecognizable from their original incarnations, as they have shifted and adapted to changing trends.
