Disappointing

I've read Nigel Marsh's previous 2 books - Fat, Forty And Fired: The year I lost my job and got a life as well as Overworked and Underlaid and really enjoyed both of them, the later one probably also helped me change a few things about my own life and perception of things.

I strongly recommend both previous books as a great read to any working professional who likes to think about his future, family, profession and truly living the life.
But this last one, "Fit, fifty and fired up" was a big disappointment: it didn't even feel like it's written by the same author and I really struggled to finish reading it.

So my advise is two-fold:
1. if you have not read any of Nigel Marsh's books, grab either "Fat, forty and fired" or "Overworked and Underlaid"
2. Skip/ignore this book.

Nigel Marsh does not disappoint again in his book of tales of real life. He philosophizes and inspires. . .an easy pick-up-and-put-down book. You do feel like you know him and just want to "visit" a little longer.

A very funny and worthy read.

I love this author, I've read his other books and they are just as funny and inspiring. My only complaint is that it's too short!

He manages to inspire on a very real life level. No, he isn't trying to climb mountains or cross the antarctic but just trying to connect more with his family and make his everyday life better. Something we all strive to do and its remarkably difficult sometimes. In his struggles and observations we see the real beauty of the normal everyday life and people around us.

A very funny and worthy read.

Provides an excellent framework

Failitating strategy sessions can be like herding cats. You are dealing with big egos and there is a real risk that you will go in circles or else come up with a bunch of meaningless drivel.

This book provides a clear and concise framework for delivering strategy that will mke a difference and can be easily communicated. It provides a step by step guide to going through the process and dealing with the likely challenges. Whether you are a facilitator, or just need to build a strategy, this is definitely worth having in your tool kit.

I took a facilitation class at the authors company a couple years back. I consider it to be the best training I have ever attended. I have used the skills and techniques taught countless times. My only affiliation to the author is that of a very satisfied customer.

Most helpful management book I've ever read

Michael does an excellent job of helping executives to both define and communicate strategy. In this complete guide for the entire life cycle of planning, communicating, monitoring, and adjusting strategy Michael breaks each step down into easy to follow and implement chunks. What was once a monumental task for my leadership team became so much easier, faster, and more accurate. Having implemented the sample templates provided on the referenced website in combination with the step-by-step guides in the book, we quickly came to precise and succinct clarity on our most important tasks, priorities, and actions. Yet, and this is most important, for once we have a working plan to actually ensure that our planning takes life into actions that adhere to realizing the goals of the plan! Our days of only visiting the strategic plan at the yearly planning session are over. Now, thanks to Michael and this book, we have a living and working set of documents that provide a lighted path to our goals.

A master of process, it's clear from the first few pages of the book that Michael put much strategic planning into the writing of the book as well. It is extremely clear, concise, and easy to follow yet powerful, packed with information, and 100% complete. It delivers on its promise; and it leaves nothing wanting. Buy this book and implement the steps; and you will receive the value traded for the book many hundreds of times over.

I highly recommend the book to anyone who seeks to be a better strategist.

About the Author
Molly K. Maskrey�first learned software while a sophomore in high school on a Wang punch card computer where you manually created an octal machine language program by popping out chads on a single card. While getting her undergraduate degree, she programmed COBOL on IBM System/360 computers at banks in and around Tampa, Florida, moving on, in her 20s and 30s to work for various large Aerospace companies including IBM Federal Systems, TRW (now Northrup-Grumman), Loral Systems, Lockheed-Martin, and Boeing. In 2010 she co-founded Global Tek Labs, an iOS development and accessory design services company that is now one of the leading consulting services for new designers looking to create smart attachments to Apple devices. Molly lives in Parker Colorado with Jennifer, her partner of 26 years and their two Yellow Labradors and basement dance practice floor.

I had to buy this book for an iOS development ...

I had to buy this book for an iOS development class. I won't say it wasn't helpful in understand and learning Swift concepts and code - it was helpful, to a point. However, the code snippets printed in the book are riddled with errors and missing bits of essential code, that as a beginning developer I would not have been able to debug without downloading and reading the source code.

Coming from a product manager's background with little knowledge of iphone Swift development -- this book has been a blessing. The amount of detail, thought and effort put forward is apparently clear from the beginning through the end. As a beginner, I have been able to quickly build a "TO DO LIST APP" that functions rather nicely. As I continue to learn Swift and refine my app I always find referencing this book before a Stack Overflow gives me more insight and the foundation I need to add features and develop more advanced functionality. I highly recommend this book. Very Impressive and useful. Not only has this book given me a step-by-step process to building an iOS app, it also has great chapters introducing me to advanced topics like concurrent threading, grand central dispatch, persistency and working with SQLlite databases. All very well written, and covered in a way to make it easily understandable. IF you're new to iOS development and want a great step-by-step plus advanced topics to understand how to best build your app right the first time, this is the book for you. Cheers!

The Best Material Selection book for Chemical plant engineers

I am a senior engineer in Chemical plant leading plant operations, maintenance and design and found that this book is the most useful for material selection. Before I met this book, I have used Material Handbook (Brady,McGraw-Hill), vendor's information and metallurgy expert visiting engineering department. This book saves, say, 80% of those effort and time, thus recovering $200 of the book price. This book and "Corrosion and Corrosion Control",(H.H.Uhlig, Wiley) cover most of daily plant material issues, answering most of the chemical plant day-to-day material selection questions.

The virtue of this book is to stick to practical information. Usually material experts start from fundamental of science and end up with saying that material selection is dependent on situation. But this book provides specific material recommendation in typical corrosive environment. The way of categorizing material is also chemical plant operation base, listing up only economically justifiable materials only, and it is also very valuable feature of the book. Consequently this book can answer questions from plant and engineering people about what material to select and why so.

Another big benefit is Appendix 1with ASTM spec number list for each material. I know engineering department has more detail than this, but this is good enough to read equipment spec with plant operation and maintenance engineers.

I hope this book keeps being revised in the future. If so, I want to add cross-reference between those listed materials and their trade name& suppliers, since in the field people tend to use trade name.

An okay ending to the series

Without ever expecting to, I became a massive fan of Kat Zhang’s books. What’s Left of Me surprised someone tired of all the dystopians, Once We Were wowed me beyond all expectations, and winning an ARC of Echoes of Us was kind of amazing and I may have danced with my book when it arrived but no biggie. Did Echoes of Us manage to match the other two books in the trilogy or even blow them out of the water? If only it had, but it’s still a fine novel and a sweet ending to the series even if it’s not necessarily one that feels right.

Within the first 70 pages, major characters die, everyone gets separated, and other characters who haven’t been confirmed dead are feared dead. Clearly, Zhang isn’t pulling any punches and the characters mean serious business just like the end of Once We Were showed readers. Character relationships and the explorations of who Addie and Eva are were the anchors for the previous two novels, but Echoes of Us has the girls running from bad guys and hiding in a cycle so regular it has little entertainment value.

But for those who liked Addie and Eva’s time locked up with the other hybrids in the first book, you’ll get more of that here when she goes undercover so the world can see how hybrids are suffering where no one can see them. If you thought her first trip inside the system was bad, you haven’t seen anything yet! The actions of Addie and Eva’s former friends caused some serious problems and not unbelievably, the system has changed somewhat to keep anything like that from happening again. It reminds me of all the brave reporters who went undercover in insane asylums to expose conditions there, like Nellie Bly. It’s horrible work that puts you in danger, but it’s so necessary.

Other things the novel reminded me of include North Korea–specifically how Zhang’s closed-off Americas are so much like North Korea. Like the communist nation, outsiders know very little about the Americas and foreign reporters put themselves in danger when they enter the country in hopes of revealing the atrocities going on within the backwards nation’s borders. That may not have been the intention, but with all the bulls*** about The Interview going on right now, it was a parallel I couldn’t help but see and it made my reading experience that much richer. I LOVE seeing parallels like that in my reading.

With everything Addie and Eva and other hybrids suffer through, you wonder if anything can get better for them, but with some incriminating evidence and negotiation, the girls get their world on the way to hybrid acceptance. Considering how deeply entrenched in prejudice their country is when it comes to hybrids, the ending is too optimistic for me. Racism and sexism are still major problem plaguing all societies after centuries of hard work, but hybrid prejudice is supposed to disappear within months and everything is good? For a series that has been such a strong allegory about the nature and problems with bigotry, it’s all too sweet for me to believe.

Despite my concerns and all the unanswered questions about hybrid life like how two souls in one body loving two completely different people would work out (among many other things), Echoes of Us will satisfy many readers and have them looking forward to future books from Zhang. I know I’m ready to see what she comes up with next! If you want to binge one of the best dystopian/mildsci-fi series out there now that all the books are out, now is a great time to do it with the Hybrid Chronicles. I’d choose these books over Divergent any day!

Good series ending, I was satisfied with the character development and plot resolution.

I wanted to read this one because I have enjoyed Addie and Eva in the previous series.

Going in I really didn't remember a whole lot of this one. With the hybrids there were double the characters to remember and besides Addie and Eva I didn't remember the other ones really. Besides Jackson and Ryan I remember the romance with them. But I quickly got back into the action and started to pick up pieces of what I'd forgotten.

Its pretty apparent the sister bond with Addie and Eva. Even though they've learned to give each other their own time they also had to learn in the last one the power of them working together. That continues to be a theme in this one as they're sent on a mission to record the environment in the facilities. I was nervous for them going back in but I knew that they were brave and that they would do anything to expose what was going on inside.

I enjoyed the end of the series, it came.to an ending that I didn't think would be possible.
There were many surprises and twists that I never saw coming. Losses and victories that made the story believable and and.ending of hope for the hybrids and the possibility of peace and balance for Addie and Eva.

Bottom Line: Good series ending, I was satisfied with the character development and plot resolution.

A pretty intense ending and a great conclusion to the series

What I Loved: I really liked how we were thrust, once again, into the world of the hybrid institutes, with this one being even worse than the last. Everything felt more dangerous and more “high stakes” than it did before. I also like how much Addie and Eva have changed over the course of the series. I do like Eva more than Addie though, she just seemed like the stronger one, despite being the recessive sister.

Left Me Wanting More: I felt like, with most “last books” lately, the majority of the book kind of drags on. I will say that this only happens for about half of the book, with others it’s usually two-thirds of the book. The first half sets up the scene and nothing much happens, but the second half has quite a bit happen in the way of the hybrid revolution and even though I could’ve used more, I was satisfied with the ending.

Final Verdict: I think this was a pretty good ending to this series and I definitely liked this book a lot more than the second book. Everything was just intensified and I felt a bigger sense of urgency in this book that I didn’t get from the others. Even though I would’ve liked to have gotten more of a sense of the hybrid dynamics overseas, I still think this for a sci-fi/dystopian series, this one was pretty good.
