Joanie, Joanie, Joanie. How many times must you fall prey to the opposite sex? How many times must I feel like violently shaking you and telling you to run in the opposite direction?
Ms. Collins weaves a fun, fast-paced name-dropping narrative that isn't afraid to pull punches or name names. A great read for any fan of classic Hollywood or just a well-wrought story about coming of age, life and love under the harsh spotlight of fame. She is a survivor and a true star.
I had the paperback years ago and it had a bunch of photographs in it. The Kindle edition does not seem to have them at all. It also seems to be edited, as I remember things from the paper-back that are no longer in the kindle edition.

Will He Still Love You Tomorrow?

"Perhaps the strongest reason for this book is this: I feel in some small way that I have been a pioneer in the cause of women's sexual equality, and also in overcoming the age barrier that sets a cruel double standard for so many women in every walk of life." Joan Collins wrote this autobiography at the height of her Dynasty fame in 1983. I read it then at the age of fourteen, thinking it so incredibly bohemian, glamorous, and adventurous. It still is, and well worth reading because of Collins' sparkling prose and storytelling skills. The real underlying theme of this book, however, are the conflicts she (and all women, really) face when dealing with men. Now at age 44 myself, and having also been around the sex n' love block and aging to boot, my perspective on Collins' idea of herself as a pioneer on sexual equality and ageism has changed. Like all young girls, she considered her mother weak, clueless, and "filled with a host of misconceptions and superstitions that she drummed into me at an early age...A lot of these adages I deliberately set out to disprove as soon as I became aware of the male sex. But, there is a lingering residue of her teachings bouncing around in the subconcious somewhere that agrees with a lot of her philosophies: 'Men are no good.' 'They only want ONE THING from a woman.' 'He'll have NO RESPECT for you if you let him HAVE HIS WAY with you.' 'Nice girls don't let men TOUCH THEM unless they are married.' And so on, and so on..." About her mother, Collins' declares that "I was always stronger than she and it irritated me that she seemed to adore being a slave to my father." To show how wrong her mother was, and how much stronger than her mother she is, Collins instead chose to be a slave to many men. First husband Maxwell Reed drugged, raped, and beat her. He tried to be her pimp, blackmailed her, and sued her for alimony. Lover Sydney Chaplin lazed around the house and let Collins support him. Lover Arthur Loew was a garden-variety selfish jerk. Married George Englund made her his mistress and played her like a fish. Warren Beatty was an unknown who latched on to her, and then proceeded to boss her around about her career. Second husband Tony Newley was indifferent and dismissive, cheating on her and creating an insulting character based on her called Polyester Poontang, for one of his works of "genius." Third husband Ron Kass starts taking drugs on the sly, letting her fund their lifestyle, and publicly humiliating her when news of bills he left unpaid were made public. Whereas her repressed mother was married to, and supported by, one man her whole life, Collins states that "throughout most of my adult life, through three marriages and all my relationships with men, I have always bought my own clothes, furs, most of my jewelry, and paid my own bills." It seems like these jerks were only too willing to let her do just that. So, have things changed all that much now that women are more "free?" Not from my experience or that of my girlfriends. Men will still take free milk, and leave the cow with the check if it makes her happy. As far as ageism, Collins indulges in a little bit of it herself when describing the dirty old men who lusted after her. To be fair, these were sleazeball casting-couch predators, but nevertheless, describing it from a young girl's viewpoint, the disgust came from the offers being from men old enough to be her father. She unwittingly tells the truth: overt middle-aged sexuality is deeply unsettling. The 40s and 50s are mother- and father-figure time, not sex-object time. Her early championship of MILF-dom helped create today's legion of cougars. Younger men don't fear them, as Collins did her horny old men. Instead, they'll just sleep with them and move on. The older woman will be disgusted with herself for finding herself hurt and made a fool of for love and sex-again. Pioneer? For what? With all due repect, Joan Collins didn't change a thing. Mummy was right on the money.
