Well written with some hiccups, Directionless

Here's what I like about it: it's too short.
Here's what I don't like about it: it's too short.
If you're a nonprogrammer, this book will inevitably give you some hiccups. Not because the book is poorly written (indeed it is hilariously written) but because no one is able to explain a few concepts you need to know in 25 to 30 pages of text completely.

As a programmer I would've taken time to explain what events are or what events mean in the programming environment. I would have expanded on what variables are and I would've talked about different datatypes. I think overall this was a good starting point for anyone who doesn't know anything about programming or JavaScript as it pertains to acrobat. What would've helped me a great deal would have been the ability to create my own methods, how they're stored, and The best way to invoke methods in scripts. In his example: The one where you manipulate the background text and the text color, it would've been nice to know if there was a generic method where the event could have been handled by the document itself instead of the objects as you tab in and out.

As a newcomer however you do not have too many choices to pick a beginner's book in JavaScript for Acrobat and for his part this book is actually written well, is easy to follow and a great place to start from. Essentially you will reach the understanding that you would really need to get his other book for $20 from his website. So in essence this is a $22 book that you get to preview by spending $2 dollars for the privilege.

What are the best way to write execute scripts, methods, how to declare variables, globals and such.. where is the best place to run your javascripts, why...book is a complete fail for seasoned programmers new to Acrobat Javascripts.

a) if you are a beginner:
What are the basics of programming. What are variables, how to declare them, etc... book is somewhat useful but extremely narrow in its scope.

This book manages not to answer either perspective particularly well. The more I thought about it, the more I feel this deserves a 2-3 stars, not the 4 starts I had originally given to the product.

As such, I give it 3 stars for new users to Acrobat. But the acrobat community remains severely starved for a good place to start their journey with Javascript...whether seasoned or fresh..

Although this was very cheap i do not like paying for a sample. Extremely little content. His sole example code is for changing the color of a text box. The author should be ashamed of himself. The whole single lesson could or should fit on one page. Don't get scammed by this "book".

a coming-of-age story infused with emotional insights

I wanted to say that my enjoyment of a book has to do with "the story," but I guess that's not really helpful. Ha! Trying to be more specific, I know I can say that I do not have much experience in critical literary analysis, so I won't even try to go there. Rather, my enjoyment of a book has primarily to do with how engaging the narrative style is, and on the emotional-cognitive insights and range that the characters take me through. "Lifted by the Great Nothing" is very strong on all fronts!

As the son of Asian immigrant parents, I could relate to much of what Max went through in terms of the stark contrast between his worldview versus his immigrant father's. (Max is an American boy and the only son of a Lebanese immigrant, single father.) Dimechkie draws attention to this contrast in a subtle manner, which I appreciate. Much like a real first generation child's experience (or at least, like mine), these conflicting worldviews between Max and his father only begin to stand out to Max as he grows older and begins to individuate more from his father's imposed identity. This seems like a particularly realistic treatment of one's coming of age.

While I've thus far focused on the immigrant aspect of the book, "Lifted by the Great Nothing" is about so much more. It is a coming-of-age story that is relatable to all. Overall, Dimechkie displays a dynamic range of emotional-cognitive insight into humanity, which is pretty critical to telling a compelling story! One example is the theme of secrecy that haunts almost all families--painful, and painfully familiar....

Bravo to the author on his debut novel!

This one got to me

The story is so personal, it drew me in to the point I felt I knew the characters for years. It's unconventional, surprising, and funny in the kind of way that makes you smile and start to cry at the same time. It made me think seriously about my family and who I really am.

A compelling, funny, moving debut

This book is captivating from the first page to the closing paragraph. I heard about it on Oprah's must read books, and I'm so glad I did! So many first novels are either too light or get tangled up their own scope. Dimechkie settles in a perfect equilibrium throughout-- weaving beautiful observations, humorous growing pains, and feelings of otherness into such commanding prose. The novel continually morphs quotidian, universal moments of adolescence into powerful scenes that expose the lit coal of the human condition. I am buying copies for all my friends. Do yourself a favor and read it too.

A noted and successful practitioner of Total Quality Management (TQM), Creech believes that TQM leadership in a centralized organization is the object lesson for business today. To this end he has been able to demonstrate his successes and those of other organizations. He effectively presents the theories and insights of Peter Drucker, W. Edwards Deming, Joseph Juran, Philip Crosby, and other notables. The book is informative and replete with examples. It falls short, though, of the promise of its subtitle. TQM is not a "paint by number" road to success, and Creech's polemic on centralization is overdone. Centralization, like democracy or communism, is in itself neither right nor wrong. Creech's assessment that "a holistic TQM system is a proven answer to the realities of the 90s" is, however, on the mark. The book should be on the reading list for quality professionals.

Brokers occasionally tell enthusiastic investors a gnomic story: only two people in the whole world understand gold; unfortunately, they disagree. Such conflicts mark the often arcane prescriptions of quality assurance's high-profile apostles--Cresby, Deming, Feigenbaum, Juran, et al. In such circumstances, Creech's uncommonly sensible, jargon-free briefing could prove welcome indeed for executives seeking guidance on the oversight philosophy known as total quality management. An ultraconfident commentator who has fruitfully practiced what he preaches (as a general in the Air Force, and, now retired, as a globe-trotting consultant), Creech does not claim that TQM will produce either quick or miraculous fixes. In fact, he stresses that effectively attending and applying the five essential elements of his canon (commitment, leadership, organization, process, product) can be an exacting, even wrenching, experience. Drawing on case studies featuring the likes of Boeing, GE, Honda, and Xerox, however, he offers convincing evidence that his holistic, putting- people-first approach to stewardship can yield a competitive edge- -and more. Nor does he shy from citing troubled companies (GM, IBM) and recalcitrant labor unions (LAM, UAD) that could benefit from TQM. In practical terms, Creech evaluates ways of instituting customer-oriented governance programs that foster employee allegiance as well as involvement. Among other things, he addresses the advantages that can accrue from common purposes, decentralized operations, interactive communications, on-the-job training, shared successes, teamwork, and allied aspects of a system administered by flexible pacesetters who focus on market outcomes, not inputs that are the province of stakeholders. The Benefit of Hitting on All Five Cylinders!

What I like about Creech's approach to TQM and more effective organizational management & leadership, is his emphasis on the need to attend to all five pillars of TQM: Product, Process, Organization, Leadership, and Commitment. If you try to improve piecemeal (as so many have), the results will be minor improvement. It is only when you get all five pillars in alignment that you start to get dramatically better results. Also, his specific advice makes so much sense: Organizations need to get a clearer picture of what constitutes quality in their product or service; they need to organize the work process with small teams as much as possible; they need to provide much more training, from the CEO on down; they need to provide clear feedback on how well the organization is doing ("scoreboarding"); etc. One other reviewer is right: Now that I have read this book, I find myself looking around for evidence of TQM practices by the employees every time I interact with an organization. It is amazing what differences you can see in organizational performance, once you are sensitized and start looking for them.

Bill Creech's The Five Pillars of TQM, first published in 1994 and since reprinted a dozen times and in eight languages, lays out an uncommonly clear-headed approach toward results-oriented management. Creech, a former Air Force four-star general and now valued industry consultant, has served on ten corporate boards of directors and worked with five national speaking bureaus. His management philosophy, while mindful that most organizations are not democracies, is essentially a variation on the golden rule embodying basic decency toward others as a core unifying theme. Best summarized as empowerment with accountability, it is rooted in a recognition that loyalty is a two-way street and that an organization can only be as successful as those at the bottom are willing to make it. Among the many insights to be gleaned from this informed and empathetic book are the virtues of managing by walking around rather than by hunkering down in a mahogany-row fortress, unburdening those who want to get things done by lifting the overlay of rules and kibitzers from their backs, and recognizing that what ultimately determines organizational success is what goes on at the front, not on mahogany row. These principles, which Creech first pioneered during his tenure as commander of the Air Force's Tactical Air Command from 1978 to 1984, are now being reapplied by the current Air Force chief, who recently included Five Pillars on his recommended reading list for all Air Force officers. Yet Creech's principles of TQM (for "total quality management"--a term and construct he invented) transcend service applicability and have been amply proven in the corporate world as well. His idea of how a top-flight organization should be run resonates implicitly with how any responsible and motivated worker would like to be treated by his superiors. Such notions as the indispensability of mutual trust and respect; the power of inclusion rather than exclusion; the vast difference in effectiveness between decreeing and persuading; and the central role of pride as a motivator are part and parcel of Creech's enlightened approach to effective leadership. Good but not great

If you want to learn the THEORY of structural dynamics, this is not the best book to get. This book does not cover many of the derivations and mathematics that are behind structural dynamics; rather, it gives a brief presentation of the theory and goes directly into earthquake engineering applications. If you want to learn the core fundamentals and theory of structural dynamics, I would highly recommend J.L. Humar's textbook: "Dynamics of Structures." That being said, it IS an excellent textbook for earthquake engineering, and is probably most valuable for practicing structural engineers or for any earthquake engineering course.

Excellent book in dynamics

The organization and presentation is excellent. It is organized into two main parts: single degree of freedom systems(SDF) and multiple degree of freedom systems(MDF). An in-depth study of SDF systems comes first naturally since MDF systems can be viewed as solving multiple SDF systems. In terms of rigor, many proofs and derivations are provided. These are usually kept separate at the end of various sections within the chapters such that the reader would not get lost in the details. The problems are also wonderful in that they challenge the reader to think critically about the subject. In short, it is a great book for students exposed to dynamics for the first time.

Wonderful Romantic Fantasy.

Eternal Bloom is such a touching, warm, and heartfelt book. It's a wonderful tale intertwined into a story about fantasy, romance and immortals.

Sarah is very pregnant and is running out of time. She is dying and nobody can seem to `fix' her, like Liz (her sister) always says. Victor will stop at nothing to get his beautiful bride healed. He determines that nothing will stop him and he keeps the faith, telling Sarah that she will live and they will raise their beautiful son, Alexander together. There is some shocking facts about the blue-ringed Immortals that I'm sure will come into play in the next book. But now, I'm not so sure I trust them. And I'm still not sure if I trust Jackson. Is he playing Victor and Sarah for his own selfish needs? I like that he helped them but I feel like there's more there. Sarah should've got more details from him before she agreed to accept his help, but I understand she has no choice.

I really loved this series and I can't wait until the next one comes out. I want Sarah to go back to Tastia and rule by Victor's side. I know she loves this world, but she was meant to be Victor's soul-mate. She's very a sweet and a nice caring queen. Those people need her back. Of course they have to conquer Ethano to go back, but I think a nice war would make for a great next book. I can't wait to see what happens in that one.

Horrible

Book 1 and 2 were great and I guess the author was trying to drag out a good thing. I read books 3, 4, and 5 and was so disappointed that that she lost her writing style and started putting in a lot of flowery words where the two main characters kept telling each other how much they loved each other over and over.
