About the Author

Ron Hackett has more than 30 years' experience in the fields of education and psychology. He has taught mathematics, psychology, and computer science courses at high school and college levels, and in-service courses for teachers in the use of microcomputers in the classroom setting. Ron has published 20 PICAXE-related articles for Nuts & Volts and SERVO magazines. He also designed the "Brain-Alpha" PC board used in the popular SERVO TankBot robot. Very nice, glad I bought it

I'll be honest here. I was purchasing a completely unrelated book, and I needed to spend a few more bucks to get free shipping at Amazon. Having just ordered a PICAXE development board and a few PICAXE chips to play with, I did a quick search and found this book. I have already bought and studied "Programming and Customizing the PICAXE Microcontroller" book by David Lincoln (also highly recommend) so I didn't think I needed another PICAXE book. But I bought it anyway.

And I'm glad I did.

Mr. Hackett did a fine job on this book. It is well written, very illustrative (although the publisher could have lightened a number of the illustrations, many were very dark and you had to squint), and follows a very nice outline.

What impresses me the most, besides the thoroughness of the programming information, is the design suggestions that he made. I have, since I was 10 years old (I still have that first breadboard 25 years later), been a breadboarder. I have built and modified many circuits on breadboards. It is a valuable skill, one that can only come from experience... but it can also get tedious. That's why I really like the development boards that are available. I have been using a PICAXE development board (google AXE091) for a few days and really enjoy it, and highly recommend it. It's also why I REALLY like the Arduino with the associated shields for it. But what impresses me with this book is Mr. Hackett's stripboard techniques. First you breadboard a peripheral (LED display, switch, etc) and then, since it is something you will likely use again and again, you can save time in the future by making a stripboard version that plugs into your breadboard. Very nice. But even that can get tedious after a while... so guess what? When you have developed that particular skill, and want to save time, you can actually purchase professionally etched PC boards from his website to make some of these peripherals.

I also really liked his logic probe in a test tube project. I intend to make one myself. It reminds me of our high school electronics class when we all made voltage testers, put them in a glass test tube, filled it with clear epoxy, and then broke the glass off... although Mr. Hackett's design simply encloses the probe in a plastic test tube... nice design.

I recently wrote a poor review of "PIC Programming for Beginners" by Mark Spencer and published by the American Radio Relay League. I stated that the book was not for beginners and I suggested that the ARRL publish a three volume set, the first being a book about digital electronics (TTL/CMOS logic, etc, which I find an essential prerequisite to micros... then Volume 2 would be a book about the PICAXE, and Volume 3 would be the book introducing the PIC and assembly code. "PICAXE Microcontroller Projects for the Evil Genius" would be my Volume 2 of this set.

Good book for those starting out on the PICAXE

Good book for those who want to learn more about using the PICAXE line of microcontrollers. The "Evil Genius" in the title is a bit of a misnomer though because there's nothing "evil" in any of the projects, unlike some of the projects in other "Evil Genius" books; think electrical shock devices and things that shoot stuff out.:) All in all a good book for the PICAXE neophyte, though I haven't seen very many (2) books on the subject.

Con:
The only put-off in this book for me is the constant reference to additional reference material found in past issues of a magazine that has to be bought. Though a lot of this additional material would be very useful information, I think much of it should have been included in the book. The end of the book also leaves one hanging with a seemingly unfinished project. Perhaps a hint to a part two Evil Genius?

BACK TO THE AXE

OK I've spent months studying and hundreds of dollars on pic trainers, chips and books and yes, hundreds of hours reading and I'm back to the axe! Why, they're easy enough to use, reliable and don't require an IQ in excess of 170 to figure out and construct with, and perhaps, integrate into some pretty interesting projects. This book helps you navigate your way through some pretty deep waters in the microcontroller world and get you to the bank safely. That's way more than I can say for many of the books on the subject! If your really serious about this subject matter, the David Lincoln book is excellent as well. I wish there were even more books on this excellent set of chips! The veroboard/stripboard and cutter makes life easier as well. Some pretty decent youtube vids on using the editor/compiler as well. I think this is the way to go for most electronics hobbyists.

About the Author
AESCHYLUS (525 BCE - 456 BCE) was the earliest of the three great tragic playwrights of ancient Greece whose work has survived to the twenty-first century. He fought bravely in the Battle of Salamis (480 BCE), which inspired his first surviving play, The Persians. According to legend, he died in Sicily when an eagle dropped a tortoise on his head.

Although these Greek plays are 25 centuries old, this production is, remarkably, the first audio release to include the complete trilogy. The strongest play is the final one, THE EUMENIDES, during which Orestes is tried before Athena for the murder of his mother, Clytemnestra. It features a fine performance by Robertson Dean as Apollo, Orestes's advocate. After listening to the trilogy, it's easy to appreciate the challenges of adapting Greek dramatic conventions to audio. For example, lengthy passages are delivered by a chorus, which may seem contrived to modern listeners. Unfortunately, this production magnifies that awkwardness--far too many lines are delivered with injudicious sound effects and multiple voices that are more cloying than dramatic. Lucid and thought-provoking production of the trilogy

Imagine yourself a member of an audience sitting in a Greek amphitheater over 2,000 years ago, caught up in the ebb and flow of a tragic drama unfolding before you, hanging on every word proclaimed by the larger-than-life masked actors who move across the stage--now lamenting in unison, now pitted against one another in angry confrontation--and you will get a sense of what it's like to listen to this 2007 full-cast audio production of Aeschylus's tragic trilogy, The Oresteia. It is an event. An event that draws you in and holds you focused on murder and mayhem and their come-uppance. An event that marches inexorably toward a restoration of the balance in the universe.

This adaptation by Yuri Rasovsky (and under his expert direction) captures not only the characters, the story line, and the tone of this tragic sequence but also its quintessential sense of time and place. No bad deed goes unpunished--especially when it involves killing one's own family. The performances are clear and straightforward, and Rasovsky's orchestration of them brings out the themes that weave their way through all three plays of the trilogy. Never intrusive, the device of using electronic distortion to enhance several of the voices serves, among other things, to distinguish gods from mortals, and is well within the spirit of the larger-than-life masks with built-in megaphones used in Greek theater.

This Hollywood Theater of the Ear production is a thoughtful and thought-provoking, as well as enjoyable, rendition of the plays.

Superb final act

All told, very good version of the plays. Some may question the choice of certain actors or the choice of using distortion, most likely electronic, to enhance certain characters, but the plays do work.

The final act, The Eumenides, comes off particularly well. At the very end the chorus is sung to a marvelous melody that comes quite by surprise, providing an amazing lift to the play.

Great play, ok translation, dreadful cast

Oh dear. I really disliked this. I gave up at the second disk.

The chorus sounds like some bad sci fi experiment.
Clytemnestra sounds like she's auditioning for a Desperate Housewives episode.
Agamemnon sounds like he's a game show announcer.

Los Angeles has thousands of really talented actors. Some from this cast may be fine in other roles but here most of the cast is miscast. Want to watch a really good cast? Watch Iphigenia with Irene Papas as Clytemnestra and Kostas Kazakos as Agamemenon: great performances! Brings tears to my eyes every time. There you get two regents, parents battling for their family and country and agonizing over the choices. It's life and death and they play it all. Here, the emotional level is on par with a sweater choice. The Trojan Women has some great performances, Irene Papas, Katherine Hepburn.

I have seen marvelous Greek productions done in Greece in Greek at Epidaurus. The Brits can do a fine job. I saw Diane Rigg do an admirable job in Medea on Broadway. Zoe Caldwell is legendary as Medea. These plays can be thrilling and riveting. Yet, why is there so damn few on CD or DVD? Is it really that much more money to video or bring the cast in to do a CD?

Please, someone take another go. The Getty Center in Malibu is bursting with money. They produce Greek drama. How about filming their productions?

About the Author
David A. Lauer is Emeritus Professor of Art at the College of Alameda.

Stephen Pentak received his BA from Union College in New York, and his MFA from Tyler School of Art at Temple University. He is Professor Emeritus of Art, and a past Associate Dean of the College of the Arts at Ohio State University. He has been the recipient of four Ohio Arts Council Fellowships and he has been a visiting resident artist at Delfina Studios in London, and Glasgow School of Art. Mr. Pentak's recent solo exhibitions include shows at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in New York and Susan Street in San Diego. Required Reading for any Serious Art Student

Basic Design is a must for any art student who is serious about his/her talent. This book was offered as a suggested reading source in my Color Theory class and I have cherished it for years since. Design Basics is very thorough in it's explaination of every kind of art form. You would be greatly benefited to purchase this book!

Be careful...

The gave it four-stars based on a quick look -- I'd read extensively in the fourth edition, and this one looks better. HOwever, this book (7th ed) has a substantial on-line component. To access the on-line part, you have to go to a website and then enter the access number that's bound into the book. My book didn't have the card -- but I could see where somebody had pulled it out. For this very expensive book, you really need to get the on-line part -- but the website itself is absolutely opaque. If you have the number, you get in; if not, you don't, and there's no way even to register a complaint. I would think this would be a special problem with any used books (though I'm not sure -- they could be fine.) I note that somebody else has registered the same complaint. So, mine goes back tomorrow. I don't know whether I'll get a new one, or just stick with my really beat-up fourth ed.

Fiske ( Understanding Popular Culture ) mixes case studies and theory in a jargon-laden but provoking assessment of ways in which ordinary people fight power-blocs in a society lacking a "broadly shared consensus of values and priorities." Fiske suggests, for example, that sports offers its fans a limited opportunity to know and master a field without being subject to the control of experts. Similarly, he suggests that Elvis fans find community in rejecting the official account of his death. Fiske examines the Smithsonian Institutions's 1991 look at the exploitative side of the frontier West, observing that while advocates of "high" culture hotly debate multiculturalism, popular culture has been invaded by revisionist movies like Dances with Wolves . His most interesting chapters delve into race relations, observing, for instance, the "counter-knowledge" purveyed by black-oriented radio stations, corresponding to a black experience of reality that differs from whites'. Fiske concludes that the current power-bloc still isn't ready to negotiate a new multicultural consensus, though he's hardly ready to define one himself.

This is an outstanding reference for the American dilemma.

This publication gives the reader a dynamic understanding of the nature of mankind as it relates to power. We are able to see ourselves as we struggle to control everything in our environment under the disquise of seeking to understand things. It is extremely abstract and should be read with others to discuss general content and have group feedback. It offers some reasonable solutions to the problems in American culture today.
