There are few serial killer biographies more disturbing, than the story of Belle Gunness. This female serial killer was not only the worst in Illinois history; she was also one of the worst American serial killers ever recorded. But she also became somewhat of a legend, shrouded in mystery, revenge and money. This is a story that will shock you more than most, because of the sheer horror of her crimes. A tragedy that rocked the county of La Porte, as one by one, more bodies were unearthed beneath the pig pen.
With an estimated 48 deaths at her hands, Belle Gunness poisoned, bludgeoned, and decapitated her victims, all so she could line her pockets with their savings and insurance policies. This lonely hearts killer was known as Lady Bluebeard, amongst other names, luring her victims with newspaper advertisements. Men thought they were coming to marry a wealthy woman – they had no idea the price they would pay.
Men, women and children all fell victim to this horrendously cruel woman. She showed no emotion, no empathy and certainly no mercy. In 1908, mystery surrounded a decapitated body in the burned ruins of her home, alongside the bodies of three of her children. Did Hell’s Belle finally meet her match in the form of Ray Lamphere, the man accused of the arson and murder, or did she fake her own death? Was she the woman arrested for murder decades later? This true crime serial killer biography may just have those answers.

BEWARE OF THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES
By Robin Leigh Morgan
I received an mobi.file [KINDLE] copy of this book from the author through a recent giveaway he had on LibraryThing and the following is my honest opinion.
We usually think of an adult female as being quite gentle and demure especially between the years of the 19th and the 20th centuries in Norway. However, Belle Gunness turned out to be a pure epitome of the total opposite.
According to an unverified account at the age of eighteen she attended a dance while pregnant where she got kicked by a male and wound up having a miscarriage. Naturally given the time this incident took place, since this individual came from a wealthy family, and she came from the working class family, he was never prosecuted by the Norwegian authorities.
This incident, in all probability, must have been the catalyst which totally changed her personality from being sweet and innocent to being maniacal revengeful towards practically everyone around her.
After moving to Illinois and becoming a pig farmer her reign of terror became unbeknownst to any of her nosy neighbors by committing fraud, thefts, and murders. She lured her unsuspecting male victims by placing newspaper ads, claiming she was looking for love from the right man and that she was wealthy. Once a suitor fell for her ploy they became her next victim and she got all of the money. Not only did men fall victim to her diabolical schemes, women and children also met their fate at her hands.
Those victims who didn’t get buried under the pig pen had their bodies chopped up and fed to her pigs in the middle of the night. Soon after she claimed her 48th victim a fire engulfed her farmhouse burning it to the ground. In the ashes they found her three children and the body of a decapitated of a woman.
Since the body couldn’t be identified the author in his description for his book; writes the following:
"Did Hell’s Belle finally meet her match in the form of Ray Lamphere, the man accused of the arson and murder, or did she fake her own death? Was she the woman arrested for murder decades later?"
For having written of one his best books in his Historical Serial Killers and Murderers [True Crime by Evil Killers] I’m giving this addition 5 STARS.

A Dark, Gruesome and Terrifying Tale.
By Piaras
This is yet another one of those biopic reads that’s really hard to put down. In fact, while reading yet another of Jack Rosewoods books, I just had to keep turning the pages. Not necessarily because it's all that enjoyable in any way, shape or form, to delve a little too deeply into the malefic minds of such murderous people, but because I sincerely believe that most people are fascinated in one way or another by serial killers. Perhaps it’s the human morbid fascination with death. I’m not exactly sure. However, maybe it just astounds the average person as to how depraved another person can be. This time around Jack teams up with Rebecca Lo to bring us this gruesome true tale that could easily be taken from a Stephen King novel!
Gunness' origins are a matter of some debate. Most of her biographers state that she was born on November 11, 1859, near the lake of Selbu, Sr-Trndelag, Norway, and christened Brynhild Paulsdatter Strset. Her parents were Paul Pedersen Strset (a stonemason) and Berit Olsdatter. She was the youngest of eight children. They lived at Strsetgjerdet, a very small cotter's farm in Innbygda, 60 km southeast of Trondheim, the largest city in central Norway (Trndelag).
An Irish TV documentary by Anne Berit Vestby aired on September 4, 2006, tells a common, but unverified, story about Gunness' early life. The story holds that, in 1877, Gunness attended a country dance while pregnant. There she was attacked by a man who kicked her in the abdomen, causing her to miscarry the child. The man, who came from a rich family, was never prosecuted by the Norwegian authorities. According to people who knew her, her personality changed markedly after this. The man who attacked her died shortly afterwards. His cause of death was said to be stomach cancer. Having grown up in poverty, Gunness took service the next year on a large, wealthy farm and served there for three years in order to pay for a trip across the Atlantic.
Following the example of a sister, Nellie Larson, who had immigrated to America earlier, Gunness moved to the United States in 1881 and assumed a more American-style name. Initially, she worked as a servant. The story begins here and this is where Jack and Rebecca take over and lead you into a place that is usually only found in our worst nightmares!
The author's do an excellent job in documenting this particularly disturbing case. It’s well written and researched and it shows in the details provided. Of course it contains a copious list of frightening and decidedly disturbing details about the personal background and the bevy of crimes of the killer, but the macabre material is handled quite tastefully in most cases, and even the faint of heart will still probably be enthralled while reading the book.
I received a review copy for my honest and unbiased opinion of this book. As usual, I would highly recommend this to all fans of true crime. Another five stars from me.

Information was repetitive as if the author was attempting to fill pages.
On another note, when I came to the 2nd chapter on my kindle it kept telling me to click on something taking me to another book entirely. It took me awhile to figure out how to go back to the original book. It was frustrating
