13 Stops, by Steve Martin

Sam - an unemployed alcoholic with very little left to live for - awakens on a train he has no recollection of boarding. As he struggles to discover how he arrived there, as well as where this train is heading, he finds himself reminiscing his way through the entirety of his life, being shown for the very first time how all things have worked together to bring him to the train's final destination - which is exactly where he needs to be. Based upon the real-life experiences of author Steve Martin, 13 Stops is a sometimes thrilling, sometimes sweet, sometimes beautiful ride through life itself, showing how - in spite of our own lack of understanding of why we experience various trials - not one of them is meaningless, and not one tear is ever wasted.

My name is Steve Martin, and I am the author of this book. While I have a great deal of admiration and respect for the world famous actor/writer/comedian of the same name, I am not he. In fact, I don't even deserve to have my name mentioned alongside his, because he is clearly far more intelligent, talented, attractive, and probably even smells better than me. I am a 52 year-old Christian writer from the Chicago area who's weekly blog (wbc upon further review) has been read in over 40 different countries, across all 6 continents. I do not know how or why my work has been linked to his, and while I greatly appreciate the free publicity, I would never want anyone to be misled into believing that this book is his work. That being said, I believe that this is a fine novel, and it would look very nice on your coffee table.

Beware
By Mark
FYI, This is not the Steve Martin who wrote Shopgirl, The Pleasure of My Company, and An Object of Beauty. It would have been nice to note that somewhere so people like me wouldn't make the mistake of buying it. Lesson learned. As opposed to the other Steve Martin, this is not good writing. I read two chapters and gave up. It's not worth it. Wooden characters, lame dialogue, the story goes nowhere. This is clearly a first attempt at writing.

Two Distasteful Books
By SB
I have recently read Penny Marshall's autobiography "My Mother Was Nuts". The title was fitting, but equally fitting for the author. I do not devote much time to reading celebrity biographies. I don't believe in idolizing celebrities. Many of them don't deserve it. The book I am reviewing is by a celebrity who is probably very talented. This book has been claimed to be autobiographical and I have thought highly of him as an entertainer. I am combining these two books because I felt similarly about both. Both celebrities have a great deal of experience (if true) with illicit drugs and excessive consumption of alcohol. I can only speak for myself, but neither person has shown great strength of character or balance. Both have lived lives better off avoided than imitated. Penny Marshall showed no regrets. Steve Martin compounded the situation by proselytizing (what I have presumed to be his spiritual beliefs) a number of times in his book. I don't believe that either author has anything to recommend them to those who might have a great deal of respect for them. I don't believe it will disturb either author to say that upon finishing these books, I felt anything but disgust. Am I intolerant? Probably, but I am not holding myself up to others to find amusing or admirable. I don't know how these celebrities have avoided imprisonment (or some form of therapy). I have no respect for them and don't like being proselytized even by people who have lived more commendably than these two. I do not recommend either book.
