The Rook debuts, prior to getting his own Magazine
By Dean Wirth
Not interested in this volume, The Rook series (character in the dust jacket) makes up half of the material. Was going to buy it as it is a good series, but it is the only good thing about Eerie in this or any later period. Light fantasy and western and sword and sorcery minus the horror is what Eerie had become and though they retained some of the good artists, the material was lacking.

The Rook returns, just in time!
By Jim Stenstrum
I've always been a sucker for time travel stories---ever since Rod Taylor took me along on his journey to the year 802701---so I was very happy when the Eerie Archives began reprinting the terrific time-traveling adventures of the Rook. The cover by Paul Gulacy is a real knockout, and Bill DuBay was at his very best writing for this character. Better yet, I hear that a new series of Rook adventures will be published soon, and I am definitely looking forward to that. Until then, enjoy the classic Rook---he's certainly worth your, um, time.

Enter The Rook
By Jason Kerr
If you have never read the Rook series before, you will love this series. I first met the Rook at the newstand in 1979. It was the first issue (collector's edition) and I really liked it. Due to the publishing schedule, I was only able to purchase a few more issues and then I moved on. In anticipation of Eerie Archives launching the Rook series, last year, I went online and was able to buy the entire run of Rook issues. I loved the stories very much. The concept was good: Scientist/genious/inventor/adventurer that can go back and forth in time. This concept opens up many possibilities. Characterization is another big plus. We had a series that also maintained continuity. The stories would resume right where they left off in the last issue. Alas, only 14 issues of the Rook were published before cancellation of the magazine. I was greatly looking forward to this archive and I, who had never read these stories, was intrigued at what made the series so good that Warren would chance giving it life in its own magazine. Besides the elements listed above, there is a lot of action going on. Truly, a winning formula was created. However, there is more to this archive than the Rook. Issue 81 starts off with a Frank Frazetta cover of an oversized woman on top of the Empire State Building fending off airplanes. This is a classic cover which launches several stories on this theme. This was tried before by Warren. There is enough variety to keep things interesting. Other stories of note are "Scallywag: Castle of the Assassin." Another great action story. In fact, Eerie issue 82 has so much action, you would think you were reading a Marvel comic. "Hard John Apple" is another fun series. This is somewhat serious, somewhat amusing but definately interesting. Some of the filler stories are also good. "Gaffer" and "Presto" are interesting and "the Pea Green Boat" continues its adventures in the post-apolyptic era. Yes, Eerie has turned the corner from being a horror magazine but no matter if it's Sci-Fi, fantasy or adventure, there will eventually come horror in the stories. I enjoyed this book immensly and highly recommend it. One last thought, after reading the Vampirella series from 1978 and seeing how bad that series got, it makes the Rook series that much better.
