Review
"This is the most readable, practical, student-friendly, and understandable text for introductory family therapy and counseling courses on the market today! It also emphasizes postmodernism and the early influence of Adler on family system theory development and the development of parent training programs in wide use today." "This is a very sound choice for beginning marriage and family counseling …"
"This text is highly readable, clear, and application-focused. It does an excellent job of describing the classic models of MFT. It provides several case examples, and shows how to apply each model to one case. The organization of each chapter is consistent, which facilitates the reader's grasp of similarities and differences among the various approaches. Dr. Bitter's style is personal, engaging, and encouraging. He knows what he is talking about, and communicates clearly with the reader. This is one text on family therapy models that is actually interesting to read and that avoids excessive abstractions."
"The author does a tremendous service to the profession by presenting the works of the masters in a new light. It is engaging, highly readable, and dare I say, fun!"
"Its greatest strength is its ability to engage the reader on a fully human level without resorting to 'academic speak' that goes over the head of the typical reader. The author clearly has a vast wealth of experience and experiences and they are conveyed in a light hearted and encouraging (not preachy) tone." "Having the Quest family throughout the text is really helpful for the student who may be trying to conceptualize the myriad theories within a real world context."

Great textbook!
By Michael Hurd
This book is great. It's not arbitrarily dense, or just a bunch of fluff. The author speaks TO the reader, not AT the reader. Bitter clearly has a great deal of experience from a diverse background and is passionate about the field, as well as insightful. While I find many textbooks hardly worth the effort of translating their arcane confusing text into actual useable knowledge, this book stands out as being challenging yet readable, and ultimately - and most importantly - it's relevant.

More tha a great textbook!
By Walton Ehrhardt
Having just completed a cursory reading of this text, I am extremely pleased with its style and content. Dr. Bitter prepared this text with the student in mind, and accomplishes the task of offering a guide to clinical understanding of the many theories of psychotherapy as applied to families. My only regret lay in the absence of addressing psychoanalytic object relations theory, but since that is one of my specialties, I can certainly supplement that in my teaching.By offering a hypothetical family presenting for family therapy, he sets about teaching several different theoretical perspectives by which the practitioner works with the family. I will certainly utilize this text for future course instruction. Walton H. Ehrhardt, EdD

Excellent overview of most theories for MFTs
By Amazon Customer
This is one of few textbooks I actually enjoyed reading and kept up with for class. It is easy to read and the format allows you to reference what you need to find quickly. Bitter is easy to understand and illustrates the theories very well. There is not a chapter for "Contextual Theory", but there is a very informative one about parenting that I found interesting. Overall, a very valuable book for students learning about Family Therapy and perhaps even good for brushing up on what you might have forgotten.
