About the Author
The Editors: Matthew Wilhelm Kapell edited, with William G. Doty, Jacking in to the Matrix Franchise (2004). An anthropologist and historian, he has published on topics as diverse as the genetics of human growth, utopian thought, and Christian romance fiction.
John Shelton Lawrence is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Morningside College, Sioux City, Iowa. He wrote, with Robert Jewett, Captain America and the Crusade against Evil (2003) and the multiple award-winningThe Myth of the American Superhero (2002).

Solid and Accessible - EXCELLENT READ!

This one finally ties it all together from a variety of viewpoints and with a great deal of creativity! It's not your "usual" Star Wars book - the one that barely tells you more than you, the fans of the world, already knew. It goes 'way beyond that with literate, accessible writing, thoughtful approaches, and it does indeed tie the franchise together in ways we've always somehow sensed they should be -- but couldn't quite do it on our own. It compliments the reader's intelligence and knowledge, and challenges you to further critical thinking (enjoyably so!) about the burgeoning 'world' of Star Wars. Buy, read, recommend to everyone who knows there is real depth to the Star Wars films, and who wants to get into then the way they should be addressed. This is another keeper by Kapell (see his JACKING INTO THE MATRIX volume): you'll have as much fun with it as you had watching the films!

Loved it!

But then I enjoy Taylor Caldwell's writing, even though I don't share her political philosophy. I especially liked this one because it focused on German immigrants to the US in the late Nineteenth and early 20th Centuries. Since that's when my own ancestors arrived from Germany, I could easily identify with the characters, both good and bad. It also gave me some insight into what my long-dead relatives might have faced during that time.

About the Author
Carolyn Tennant, PhD, is a professor, pastor, and author who maintains an active speaking schedule across the United States and around the world. She ministers in district and national conferences, pastors retreats, district councils and camps, women s events, and churches. Dr. Tennant served for nearly thirty years at North Central University in Minneapolis, Minnesota where she was a professor and vice president. She is ordained in the Assemblies of God and currently works as an adjunct professor, teaching in the Doctor of Ministry program at the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary of Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri. She and her husband currently reside in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Dr. James T. Bradford is author of�Preaching�and�Second Chronicles Seven:Fourteen.�He holds a PhD in aerospace engineering from the University of Minnesota.�While in college, he led a Bible study that eventually grew into a university church.�Upon graduation in 1979, Jim entered full-time ministry with that campus outreach. Unless the Lord builds the house...

Dr. Tennant brings the focus of the church back to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. She explains the currents of the five-fold ministry in a way that encourages and challenges the body of Christ to be faithful with the gifts that are given so that the bride will be prepared on the day that Jesus returns. There are so many encouraging stories and messages in this book for leaders and followers alike. It is a clear picture of how ministry is to work. I high recommend it.

Church leaders, get this book!

This is a wonderful book by an amazing scholar and Christian leader. Dr. Tennant's unique understanding of the five ministry gifts and how they can best serve the local church is outstanding. As one who has been a church planter and pastor in several situations, I can only say that I wish this book had been available many years ago!

5 Ministry Currents of Revival

In Ephesians 4:11–12, the apostle Paul wrote: “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up…” These five ministries played an obvious and fundamental role in the Church, according to the apostle, yet they are the occasion of no small amount of controversy today. Do the apostolic and prophetic ministries continue to operate today? If so, do they constitute offices within the Church? Should we call specific ministers “Apostle So-and-so” or “Prophet Such-and-such”?

Many classical Pentecostals believe that too much emphasis has been placed on office and more emphasize should be placed on function. In other words, the question should not be whether such-and-such a person bears the office and title of apostle or prophet but whether apostolic and prophetic functions are taking place in the Church. This emphasis on function is the position of the Assemblies of God. It is also the emphasis of Carolyn Tennant in her new book from Vital Resources, Catch the Wind of the Spirit. “The vast majority of teaching on this [subject] has focused on church leadership,” she writes. “I’m firmly convinced, however, that God is focused upon the ministry currents that each person is supposed to oversee. He means for the whole church to get involved.”

What are the five currents Ephesians 4 identifies? Tennant outlines them this way:

1. Seeing people come to Christ (The Powerful Wooing Current)
2. Ensuring new believers learn to follow Him closely and mature into what He desires them to be (The Radical Forming Current)
3. Caring for His disciples in the body of believers so they may stay health, and connected, and know they are loved (The Synchronized Choreography Current)
4. Providing direction for the church: correcting and restoring, affirming and encouraging (The Housecleaning Directional Current)
5. Pushing back the darkness and taking new territory for the kingdom of God (The Miraculous Sending Current)

Each chapter describing these currents is paired with a chapter describing, “what kind of people are needed to oversee the current and where they might be in our churches.” Tennant seems indifferent to whether these “overseers” are church offices filled by paid ministers, and she pays careful attention to “misconceptions” that frequently attach themselves to the ministries of apostles and prophets. Here are the “overseers” for each of the currents above, respectively:

1. The Evangelist
2. The Teacher
3. The Pastor
4. The Prophetic Servant
5. The Apostolic Emissary
Tennant clearly longs to experience the renewal and revitalization of North American churches. She is thoroughly Pentecostal in both theology and practice. (If you doubt that the Holy Spirit speaks directly to believers today, make sure to read the story she tells on pages 160–162 about the Spirit sending her to talk to a man in the parking lot of a run-down strip mall. It’s like a contemporary version of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch.) In addition to sharp biblical insight and poignant personal anecdotes, Tennant highlights the Spirit-filled missionary endeavors of St. Patrick and other Celtic missionaries in the early medieval era. That’s a surprising move, given how many Pentecostals, charismatics, and evangelicals view the state of the early medieval Church. On the other hand, when you see how downright “Pentecostal” those missionaries could be—including St. Patrick’s experience with speaking in tongues—you realize that the connection between a vibrant experience of the Spirit and power for mission to the world have always gone together, both biblically and in Church history.

I’ll wrap up my review by quoting Tennant’s concluding words:

"When God is free to move, as He is in revival, the Triune God brings a fresh flow of each and every current. The Trinity has been working in every one of them all along from the beginning, and the Three are all desirous of pouring out even more upon us. Will we receive it?"

That’s a very good question.

Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas's firm, OMA, and Italian fashion house Prada have a lot in common: They both existed for years before they became the pets of the American moneyed elite in the mid to late 1990s. They both eschew conventional notions of what's elegant or pleasing to the eye--Koolhaas's designs often look like post-industrial origami, and Prada's like uniforms for a really chic neo-Fascist army. Most of all, they're both poised for a transition from designerati darlings to global household words.

For all of these reasons, one supposes it's fitting that Miuccia Prada sought out Koolhaas and associates to design three new "epicenter" stores for the company--in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco--and to create Prada's Web site. They've documented that collaboration in this hefty, molto stile paperback that illustrates how they've rethought the shopping experience in ways both high-flown (in NYC, a shoe section that converts to a theater for performances and other "non-shopping events"; an electronic customer-identification/service system that either promises or threatens to track shoppers and their "needs" more closely than the FBI's) and cleverly common-sensical (dressing rooms with simultaneous, digitally-produced front, back and side-views, phones for requesting another size, and walls you can shift from translucent--so you can model for your friends--to frosted, for privacy).

Design-wise, the stores say "Koolhaas" as we know him so far--the facade of the San Francisco one, for example, is all perforated-looking metallic grids, and elsewhere there are shiny, swooping ceilings and walls, plus glass elevators that hover among glass floors like huge floating rooms. But most of what we see in this book is funky, moody photography of the sites' models, thickly populated by white figurines with the same unsmiling hauteur of Prada's sexy real-life runway models (not enough of which are featured here, by the way). The book's minimal text, though boldly designed, strikes a strange note somewhere between the usual half-cryptic semio-speak of Koolhaas's other books, and the oppressive language of corporate self-promotion ("Our ambition is to capture attention and then, once we have it, to hand it back to the customer."). But then, isn't that as it should be? With both Koolhaas and Prada, you often suspect that their recent stranglehold over American fashionistas and theory-queens alike is of great amusement to them. Between these pages, the joke once again might be on us, but who can't take a little joke when it's as stylishly presented as it is here?--Timothy Murphy

Indefinite expansion represents a crisis: in the typical case it spells the end of the brand as a creative enterprise and the beginning of the brand as purely financial enterprise.

Expansion can be measured on two levels: quantity and quality.

On the level of numbers, there are simply more and more Prada stores; on the level of scale, Prada is about tot launch a number of special epicenter stores.

The danger of the large number is repetition: each additional store reduces aura and contributes to a sense of familiarity. The danger of the larger scale is the Flagship syndrome: a megalomaniac accumulation of the obvious that eliminates the last elements of surprise and mystery that cling to the brand, imprisoning it in a 'definitive' identity.

But expansion can also be used for a strategy of permanent redefinition of the brand. By introducing two kinds of stores - the typical and the unique - the epicenter store becomes a device that renews the brand by counteracting and destabilizing any received notion of what Prada is, does, or will become. The epicenter store functions as a conceptual window: a medium to broadcast future directions that positively charges the larger mass of typical stores. (REM KOOLHAUS)

What can Prada be?

The other review here is quite good and explains the book quite nicely, so I will try not to be redundant. But I really found this book brilliant from a retail sales standpoint. I once had a professor of music history ask the question, "what can music be?", and this book asks the similar question of "what can shopping be?" Much credit has to be given to Prada for their investment of time and money into projects that really stretch the boundaries of the luxury shopping experience (and thanks to Rem Koolhaas and OMA/AMO for their incredible designs). And to prove that all these concepts are not merely theorized ideas neatly bound in a book, you simply need walk into the Prada SoHo 'Epicenter' store to see what it's all about.

Planet Prada ?

Do you love Prada? Do you hate Prada? Does the sight of those mint green walls and that little metallic triangle bring you a rush of assurance? Or does it intimidate the hell out of you?
One thing you'll conclude by the time you wallow through "Projects For Prada Pt 1" brought to you by Oma/Amo's Rem Koolhaas and the Fondazione Prada Edizioni, is that Prada IT is certainly not resting on their laurels.
Speaking of laurels, if you have always suspected the Prada company as being somewhat imperial (in the very Roman sense of the expression) then "P for P 1" is going to do very little to dispel your paranoia. In fact it'll probably amplify it. Big time.
A mere six pages in and you're hit full frontal with the boldfaced word "Expansion" before being treated to a hilarious series of conceptual maps that poses the idea of Prada vs Population, Prada vs GDP, Prada vs National Debt before concluding with the totalitarian proposition of "Prada World".(What you wouldn't give to see the look on Patrizio Bertelli's face when he saw that in the proofs .)
From that ambitious point, as they say in the streets, It's on.
The section titled "Tourism" treats you to what is in essence an exploded view of the brand's flagship store in Milan, the Prada workspace (showroom, buyer's space, prototypes. )
You then segue into an elegant distillation of Koolhaas's idea of where the Prada brand could legitimately evolve, from what the brand's idea of luxury is (or is that " will be"), to the indispensable visual elements that all the stores should carry.
After all the preamble you finally get to the nitty gritty of what Koolhaas plans for each Prada store slated to be opened in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
And that means the already infamous shoe theater in NY, the underground shop windows of LA and most architectually daunting of all, the eight story Prada tower in SF complete with a mind boggling swiss-cheese facade.
And Rem's not done with you yet.. The perverse video outakes of the behind the scene meetings , a terribly abstract series on the proposed materials for the shops his flowcharts on where Koolhaas intends to take the Prada web-site and terrifying details like RFID tags for the purposes of inventory control,point of sales efficency and theft control (Damn!) .
The idea of a high-tech Prada loyalty card is brand perfect , as are the futuristic dressing rooms , kiosks and in-store display panels.
Of course Koolhass wouldn't be Koolhaas without the naughty and unlikely gestures (Prada vomit?), the out-there propositions for ad campaigns or that sustained idee fixe of the "Prada army" . But that facetiousness is totally within the Koolhaas program. After all this is the man who gleefully designed the ...Hermitage Guggenheim AND Guggenheim Las Vegas museums.
Whether meant ironically or in scary earnest the book does lay bare the brutality and the complexity of both Koolhaas' and Prada's ambition. Somebody who knows these things once told us that Prada Sport does not seek to compete with other designer lines, but rather, has its sights set on Nike . And reading P for P Pt 1 has completely persuaded this reader that sentiments such as these are characteristic of Prada culture.
The Prada store as the Disney-world for millionaire semioticians the world over, intellectual perversity as the ultimate luxury proposition, Rem Koolhaas for sale to the culture -at large. These questions and more will riddle you as you go deeper into....PRADAWORLD
But whatever side issue that will swarm in the wake of this book, one things for sure. It sure is rife with some killer one-liners.(E.G "Luxury is Rough." Amen to that!)
Every designer should have it by the bedside just to help them get that competitive spirit cracking . The world's most famous architect as the driest stand up comedian ever. Who would have thought.

Poor Craftsmanship

The content and design of this thick book is great. Unfortunately the quality of the manufacture of this book in no way reflects the merchandise produced by PRADA. Prior to removing the book from the shrink-wrapped plastic it was obvious that a stain from the glue had soaked thru the cover. After reading the volume for about 30 minutes the cover completely seperated from pages. Utterly disappointing.

About the Author
James R. Bitter is a professor in the Counseling Department at East Tennessee State University. He has more than 38 years of teaching experience and has authored numerous publications, including 33 chapters or sections written for textbooks and trade books, more than 30 journal articles, and six videos. He also has served on four editorial boards and has conducted many seminars across the country and internationally. His teaching, publications, and training have focused on marriage and family and Adlerian therapy.

Great textbook!

This book is great. It's not arbitrarily dense, or just a bunch of fluff. The author speaks TO the reader, not AT the reader. Bitter clearly has a great deal of experience from a diverse background and is passionate about the field, as well as insightful. While I find many textbooks hardly worth the effort of translating their arcane confusing text into actual useable knowledge, this book stands out as being challenging yet readable, and ultimately - and most importantly - it's relevant.

More tha a great textbook!

Having just completed a cursory reading of this text, I am extremely pleased with its style and content. Dr. Bitter prepared this text with the student in mind, and accomplishes the task of offering a guide to clinical understanding of the many theories of psychotherapy as applied to families. My only regret lay in the absence of addressing psychoanalytic object relations theory, but since that is one of my specialties, I can certainly supplement that in my teaching.By offering a hypothetical family presenting for family therapy, he sets about teaching several different theoretical perspectives by which the practitioner works with the family. I will certainly utilize this text for future course instruction. Walton H. Ehrhardt, EdD

Excellent overview of most theories for MFTs

This is one of few textbooks I actually enjoyed reading and kept up with for class. It is easy to read and the format allows you to reference what you need to find quickly. Bitter is easy to understand and illustrates the theories very well. There is not a chapter for "Contextual Theory", but there is a very informative one about parenting that I found interesting. Overall, a very valuable book for students learning about Family Therapy and perhaps even good for brushing up on what you might have forgotten.
